Checked on someone slumped over on the sidewalk outside a busy restaurant today. He had fallen over and injured his hip—unable to weight bear, possible fracture. We called 911 and I waited with him for 40 minutes. 40 minutes. Countless people walked by avoiding eye contact.

Today I responded to a very public overdose in downtown #Victoria . The comments from onlookers was appalling—one person shouted ‘just let them die for fuck sakes’. This is just one small example of the stigma people who use drugs experience. He’s fine by the way.

I’m so disappointed in the sheer indifference we treat each other with. Injuries of neglect don’t just harm people physically, they pose lasting psychological injury. Picture yourself laying in the heat unable to stand and people gawking at you but choosing to walk by.

My mom broke her hip once and she was too embarrassed to call out for help (pre-cell era). Our elderly neighbour found her an hour after the incident still on the curb and helped her into a chair with a wheelbarrow then called 911. Life is hard, just look out for each other.

He told me he was on a walk, that he felt light headed from his cardiac meds and missed a step and fell on his side. The worst part was that he had been there for so long in the heat. Some people saw him fall and watched him from the restaurant patio, drinking and staring.

It took 30 minutes for someone else to offer help. By then the person probably had heat stroke and he started vomiting. Two people total offered help, one off-duty outreach worker and one concerned bystander. The rest walked by and made shitty comments about drugs.

I responded to an overdose today with fentanyl induced muscle rigidity. The person was trying to pick up a prescription but was denied for missing too many days. Instead they accessed the unregulated supply and overdosed immediately. Policy failure in action.

So it turned out the cashier lost someone they cared about and grief made them angry. They are the proud new owners of a naloxone kit and, while we didn’t reach consensus on everything, they know how to use it. Don’t give up on people when they hit you with a strong defence.

Access to prescribed #SafeSupply in BC has dropped significantly since March 2023. In March, 5044 people were on safe supply. That number dropped to 4853 in May and now in June there’s only 4619. That’s 425 fewer people in 3 months. Intentional policy failure. #bcpoli

Benzodiazepine contamination in the illegal drug supply has continued to worsen both here in #Victoria and abroad. Today the effects of long-acting benzos were clearly identifiable, as individuals experienced: Increased risk for overdose, prolonged sedation, and amnesia. 🧵
