When I graduated high school my mama went to a rent-to-own store and got a computer so I could go to college with a laptop. Over the course of her payments she ended up paying $2400 for a $700 laptop. Being poor is expensive & college isn’t the equalizer we think it is.

While getting my PhD a lot of the people I passed on campus that looked like me were groundskeepers, housekeepers, & other service staff. The generous statements they gave me on my good & bad days lifted my spirits in ways they will never know. They were part of my village.

I didn’t really negotiate my grad school offer, first TT job, or book contract, I was just excited that someone valued my work. When we dont place a premium on ourselves the only one who benefits is institutions. We cant wait for institutional acceptance to see our own importance

Colombia’s treatment of its students shows that universities are not organized for intellectual & political rigor nor care; but rather corporations that serve the interest of elites. Young people should not be treated like this.
