We only have 1 rule at Duke and we call it the man’s rule. “Be where you’re supposed to be! Doing what you’re supposed to be doing! As well as you can possibly do it!” David Cutcliffe
I was a 4 year starter in college, but the fans who cheered for me, asked for autographs or pictures don’t call and offer to pay my mortgage or children’s college tuition. I’ve also never been asked my college stats in a job interview. Education will far outlast Football.
#Ap2w
A good high school athlete with bad grades is like a great white shark that’s stranded on the beach. Both are generally a casualty of their own bad decisions.
#Ap2w
I was a 4 year starter in college, I won a lot of awards and received a lot of recognition, but neither of my 3 daughters have ever asked to watch my highlight film. Don’t take school for granted because you’re a good athlete. Sports will one day come to an end.
#Ap2w
Bad grades are not generally the result of lack of intelligence, they are generally the result of laziness, lack of focus, poor work habits, lack of discipline or not having priorities in order.
#Ap2w
This was the first time my new born granddaughter and I had a disagreement, but it didn’t last long because what she didn’t know was after 3 daughters her PaPa is a seasoned pro. Welcome to the world my little

When we visit a school in addition to grades we check conduct reports and attendance reports. If you are tardy or absent regularly in high school you’ll probably be tardy or absent regularly in college. This will quickly get you removed from our recruiting board.
#Ap2w
If you’re a student athlete and someone constantly has to persuade or encourage you to do the things you’re supposed to do, you don’t really want to be successful, you just want the perks of success. No one should ever care more about your success than you do.

When I spoke to my mentor
@DavidCutcliffe
several weeks ago, he told me that I’d have options, to be patient and to choose people not places. I was planning to be patient, but I found the perfect people, at the the perfect place. Reunited and it feels so good!!! Let’s go Hokies!
Camp Tip: When a coach asks your name or you introduce yourself always say your first & last name clearly, state where you’re from & what high school you attend, make eye contact and give firm handshake. Your introduction could be what sets you apart from everyone else.
#Ap2w
My family and I would like to thank TTU and Red Raider Nation for a wonderful experience. We’re very appreciative of our time here and the people we’ve met. Texas Tech is an amazing place. We’re very thankful for this chapter and we look forward to our next .
#GunsUp
If you’re offended by coaching, you have a problem with listening, if you have a problem with listening, you have a problem with structure, if you have a problem with structure, you have a problem with discipline, if you have a problem with discipline, you’re a liability.
#Ap2w
All athletes will one day be former athletes and most former athletes are soon to be forgotten athletes. Every young athlete needs to understand and accept this. Prepare yourself academically so that you don’t need a uniform to define who you are in life. Academics Matter!
#Ap2w
Your college decision shouldn’t be a popularity contest or social media charade. It’s a business decision that will impact the rest of your life. Likes, retweets and comments don’t pay mortgages, bills or children’s college tuition.
#Ap2w
Parents allow your child to grow up. One of the hardest lessons for parents to learn is coaches aren’t obligated to explain why they’re playing who they’re playing. Bad attitudes, unaccountability, busted assignments, selfishness and tardiness, are things parents don’t see.
#Ap2w
Coaching Tip: You can’t treat people badly and expect them to lay it all on the line for you. The more a person respects you, the more he or she will give you.
#Ap2w
Never be embarrassed or ashamed because you’re smart, you do your work and you make good grades. Being a class clown, underachiever or lazy individual is not cool. Concern yourself less with being accepted and more with being respected.
#Ap2w
Unfortunate circumstances don’t equate to a bad day, a negative attitude about those circumstances equates to a bad day. Unfortunate circumstances are a part of life, bad days are choices in life.
#Ap2w
As a DB you don’t have to be a big hitter, but you must be a willing tackler. Everyone who plays defense must be willing to fight and get dirty to win their personal battles.
#Ap2w
In a world where high school prospects are immortalized through social media and recruiting the biggest shock when you get to college is how good all the guys are you’ve never read about or heard of. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Stay humble and hungry.
#Ap2w
In off coverage we focus on the inside hip of the receiver pre snap. It allows us to see his initial stem, maintain proper leverage and gage his speed off the ball. Our eyes don’t leave the hips until they sink and we establish a drive point. This helps to eliminate double moves.
You can have offers from every school in the country, but it’s irrelevant if you don’t have grades to get into any of them. All you’re doing is fooling people by publicizing & posting them in addition to wasting time, effort and energy you should be applying to academics.
#Ap2w
Hokie Nation we just wanted you guys to know that Coach Pry finally took the time to change his shirt. He didn’t want to, but he was a little embarrassed someone on twitter noticed. Hopefully he remembers to let us eat at some point today. “It’s a great time to be a Hokie!”
#LGH
If you’re a popular high school athlete take the time to speak to, sit with or talk to someone at school others may not. You never know how something that takes little effort on your part can impact the lives of others.
#Ap2w
Good morning Red Raider Nation. I couldn’t be more fired up about heading to West Texas. It takes a believer to be a winner and I’m all in. It’s a great time to be a Red Raider!!! Guns Up!!!

Recruiting 101: The more sports you play in high school, the more appealing you will be to college coaches. In addition to displaying your versatility, it shows your competitive nature. A true competitor gets excited at any opportunity to compete.
#Ap2w
Your offers may look good on social media, but don’t get caught up in the hype. Regardless of how many offers you have, you can only go to one school and you’ll have to prove yourself once you get there.
#Ap2w
Don’t be the high school superstar who can’t take your talents to the next level because you’re an academic casualty. Athletics and Academics go hand and hand.
#Ap2w
A college or university can only recruit a certain number of guys a year at each position. When the talent level of prospects is similar or equal coaching staffs look for reasons to pick one over the other. Don’t let social media be the reason a school doesn’t pick you.
#Ap2w
“If you’re not disciplined enough, conditioned enough or tough enough it’s our jobs as coaches to tell you. It’s not an attack on you, it’s the truth about you.” David Cutcliffe
Never be embarrassed or ashamed to walk away from a situation that could cost you opportunities, your freedom or your life. Pride and ego has ruined far too many careers and lives.
#Ap2w
People will exploit the darkest moments from your past to try and keep you from moving past them, but It’s only negativity if you allow it to affect you in a negative way. It’s all in your attitude.
#Ap2w
Prospects regardless of what you are told during the recruiting process the first day of practice in college you will be at the back of the line with all the other freshman with a piece of tape on your helmet with your name on it. It will be up to you to work your way up.
#Ap2w
Coaching Tip: It doesn’t matter how the public feels about you, what matters is how your players feel about you. You may be known or recognized by your wins and losses, but you are measured by the amount of lives you impact as a coach.
#Ap2w
A night game at Lane Stadium is not only one of the best atmospheres in college football, it’s one of the best atmospheres in sports. “It’s a great time to be a Hokie!”
#LGH
Stay away from teammates who are opposed to discipline and structure, because they will never lead you in the right direction. Those individuals who always complain about the rules are always looking for allies to break them with.
#Ap2w
Coaching Tip: You can’t expect players to be as good as they can be on the field if you’re not coaching them to be as good as they can be off the field as well. The two always have and always will go hand and hand.
#Ap2w
Every high school has a former athlete who’s legacy is known by everyone in town, who’s still in that same town, because they never took school seriously. Always Play To Win at everything you do. Academics Matter!

Congrats to our interim Head Coach
@SonnyCumbie_TTU
on being retained as offensive coordinator at Texas Tech. He’s a great man, leader, husband, father, coach and friend. West Texas made, the originator of the “Pump Jack Mentality” is staying home.

I don’t care how many offers you have, who has offered you, how many stars you have or what you’re ranked. What I do care about is will you compete, do you have heart, are you mentally tough and can you play.
#Ap2w
Offers may look good on social media, but don’t allow collecting offers during the recruiting process to overshadow doing what you should be doing to ensure that you choose the right school. It doesn’t matter how many offers you have, you can only sign with one school.
#Ap2w
First I’d like to thank my wife and kids for allowing me to coach the game I love. Thanks Coach Wells for believing in me and giving me an opportunity. With that being said, I’m committed to Texas Tech University. Please respect my decision.
#GunsUp
I just wanted to do that. 😂
If you’re depending on your athletic ability to carry you through life, you’re taking a huge gamble. Most job applications ask for your level of education, but not many, if any at all ask for your athletic accomplishments. Academics Matter!
#Ap2w
Football has changed the lives of thousands of people, but education has changed the lives of millions. Don’t allow your NFL dreams to cause you to take your academics for granted. You can’t control making it to the NFL, but you can control getting your education.
#Ap2w
Today is the first day of spring recruiting and college coaches will be in and out of schools across the country. Although we can’t talk to you be sure you’re presentable in case a coach sees you. Your appearance is a part of your resume.
#Ap2w
Coaches when you allow a good player to demonstrate a lack of discipline on or off the field you compromise the discipline of your entire team. Other players follow and mimic the habits and behavior of good players. Force them to be the example of how to do things right.
#Ap2w
Being a good teammate has nothing to do with your athletic ability. Being a good teammate is about your reliability, accountability, character and level of commitment to the team.
#Ap2w
The condition of your bedroom, closet, locker or personal space says a lot about your character. If you don’t take care of or keep your personal space clean, you’re either lazy or unappreciative, because you haven’t worked for it.
#Ap2w
I was a college football player who not many people remember or care to remember today. One day this will be most of you and you need to be ok with that. If you have no identity without a football uniform on, you’ll have no identity for most of your life. Academics Matter!
#Ap2w
Our starting left tackle the last 3 seasons and current NFL prospect chose to pass up participating in our pro day today because he’s decided to attend medical school. A lot of people asked him “WHY” when he chose Duke. He made a 40 year college decision not a 4 year decision.
If a recruiter had guaranteed me I could start as a true freshman I would’ve laughed because I would’ve known he was just telling me what he thought I wanted to hear. Guys who fear competition fall for recruiting talk, guys who embrace competition appreciate real talk.
#Ap2w
Offering a player just because another school offered him is just like proposing to a woman just because someone else chose to do so. Would you marry someone you don’t know? Don’t get so caught up in the flattery of recruiting you lose sight of the reality of recruiting.
#Ap2w
After handling the move, prepping the house for sale, taking care of the kids, saying her goodbyes and making the drive from NC to MS to meet me, my superwoman made it. After seeing the frustration & tears from afar, I had to put my arms around her. A good woman completes a man.
Coaching Tip: Instead of screaming at players about what you think they should know, find out why they don’t know what you think they should know. Players learn and retain information differently. It’s your job as a coach to know this and to figure out how to reach them.
#Ap2w
After little consideration I have decided to stay committed to Duke University for the 12th consecutive year. I’d like to thank all those who showed interest in me but my recruitment is now closed. Please respect my decision!!!

Being a good athlete with bad grades is like having a nice car with no tires. Although you may attract a lot of attention you’re not going to get very far.
#Ap2w
Every athlete must know the difference between a coach picking on you and a coach challenging you. If you get offended, mad or upset every time a coach is hard on you for something you’re not or should be doing you may need to go find something a little easier to do.
#Ap2w
My Alma Mater has hired one of my best friends and one of the best defensive line coaches in the business. Rebel Nation give my man Deke Adams and his wife Alexis Adams a warm Hotty Toddy welcome. I coach at Duke, but I’m a loyal Ole Miss fan. Great Hire

It’s sad, but true that everyone around you is not pulling for you and a lot of them want to see you fail, because of jealousy and envy. That’s why it’s important to trust your instincts, keep your eyes open, your circle small and to be careful with your trust.
#Ap2w
Prospects don’t ignore the schools recruiting you trying to get the attention of the schools you want to recruit you. A valuable lesson to learn in life is sometimes you have to choose those who chose you.
#Ap2w
Players who always have an excuse or something to say back to coaches are usually worried about how criticism made them look because they lack confidence. The most confident players I’ve coached embraced constructive criticism because they knew it was making them better.
#Ap2w
Just touched Down in “The 757” and a proud Hokie rented me my car from Enterprise. First class customer service and an enthusiastic welcome to the 757. I love the family vibe! I didn’t get your name, but I appreciate the warm welcome. “It’s a great time to be a Hokie!”
#LGH
Coaching Tip: The moment you allow 1 player to be an exception to the rules, is the moment you decide to sacrifice the respect of the rest of them.
#Ap2w
It does no good to have elite athletic ability or talent on the court, track or field, if you have failing grades in the classroom. Bad grades are and always have been the number 1 killer of high school athlete’s sports dreams.
#Ap2w
College prospects don’t ignore the schools that are paying attention to you trying to get the attention of the schools you want to pay attention to you because you could end up getting left out all together.
#Ap2w
Don’t wait until the season to get in shape for the season. Don’t wait until you’re a starter to prepare like a starter. Don’t wait until the game to get psyched up about playing the game and don’t wait until you make a mistake to prepare yourself to deal with adversity.
