Clayton Kershaw is not a shortstop, but still, he used this glove for 13 years in The Show. Waited to earn a new glove with a championship. Retired it after last season’s triumph. LEGEND
My son is putting up a hell of a fight. The amazing doctors & nurses have been providing him with great care. Thank you to the hundreds of people who have reached out. We are overwhelmed with appreciation & gratitude for your support. I can’t say thank you enough. Bless you all
(1) The doctors have concluded that the damage to Crew’s brain is catastrophic & irreparable. We are devastated.
We have made the difficult decision to donate Crew’s organs in the hopes that he can help another child and family in need...
High school dudes like to diss D2 & D3 programs. You guys need to visit a D2/D3 school. You’ll see 21+ year old, physically mature men with beards. Y’all still trying to get some fuzz on your face & struggle to compete w/16 year olds. Stop it
We said our final goodbyes to our little hero today. Crew was laid to rest with a “Super C“ cape draped across his coffin. We are grateful for the outpouring of love & support we’ve received.
Our son Crew stopped breathing last night. They got his heart beating & he was airlifted to Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio. He is in intensive care. We need your prayers.
Our family set up this gofundme to help w/expenses
You don’t know if you’re strong until after you get your ass kicked. You don’t have to win the next day, you just have to show up. Just keep showing up.
High school baseball players: Please don’t announce that you receive a 1st offer. That’s a really obnoxious thing that football kids do. Baseball players announce commitments, not offers
I usually have common goals for the new year. Lose the dad bod, plan a vacation, clear the clutter.
I’ve spent the last few days reflecting on the “I love you’s” I didn’t say, the hands I didn’t hold, the patience I lost & the hugs I didn’t give.
Going to rectify that in 2020
One of my best friends is coaching his son’s Little League team.
Introduced himself to the parents with a banger of a line:
“Increase your participation or lower your expectation.”
Parents complain if there’s more than 12 players on a youth travel ball team...
High school travel teams typically carry 14 + 2 PO’s
High school varsity teams usually carry 25
College teams have 35 on the roster
Learning to compete & earn time early has benefits later in life
End of the high school baseball season is coming.
I warn athletes. Most of the seniors are going to cry when it’s over. Even the ones who are going to play college ball.
Leave it all out there.
Contacted a college coach friend about a player
He contacted the player
I followed up w/him about the player
He made an offer
Talked to the player about the offer & his options
Player accepted the offer
Recruiting service took credit
Don’t sign up for recruiting services
The 12th best player (out of 12) on an 11u team I coached several years back committed to a prominent D1 program today
1st of that group to do so
Takeaways:
1) He was coachable
2) His parents encouraged him to have fun & work hard
3) He matured physically & developed his tools
BP swings are 70% effort
On-deck swings are 50% effort
Normal game swing is 90% effort
2 strike swing is 80% effort
You wonder why you you’re never on time
Pediatric nurses & docs are angels on earth. It’s difficult for to witness the things they do on a daily basis. I don’t know how they hold it together. Special people.
We’re overwhelmed with gratitude for the acts of kindness our family has received. Its difficult to respond to all the mentions & messages, but please know that we are beyond thankful.
A sac fly is a team at bat
A sac ground ball is a team at bat
A walk is a team at bat
A single is a team at bat
A double is a team at bat
A triple is a team at bat
A home run is a team at bat
Any action that scores a run or increase the probability of scoring is a team at bat.
For those wondering what’s unique about the Pujols bat that was illegal for Maldonado to use last night- MLB outlawed low density maple bats because they were a fracture risk…
David Brown is a blind sprinter and Jerome Avery is his guide. You can read Avery’s lips throughout the race saying, “Go David!”
This is life. Find people to run beside and encourage, keep them on track, and help them see what they can’t see for themselves.
Roll up to the gym at 4:48am. More than 20 cars in the lot. Some dudes on their heavy sets already, looking at me like I’m soft for showing up late. Find this kind of environment to train at. It will make you better.
Nolan Ryan played from 1966-93
Pitched in 807 games w/773 starts. 2nd most all time
The last pitch he threw at AGE 46 was 96mph
Nolan Ryan was an advocate of throwing a lot in between starts
Regularly went over 100 pitches in games
Nolan was a dedicated weight lifter
Tyler Glasnow is making $760k, doesn’t hit free agency until 2024 & is starting game 5 vs the Yankees lineup on 2 days rest. If he gets injured he could severely limit lifetime earning. I don’t want to hear that this generation doesn’t want to win/doesn’t put the team 1st.
You know why most kids stop playing baseball? Parents suck the fun out of the game. You start your postgame lecture as soon as they walk off the field & he’s got to deal with it all the way home. The postgame dread outweighs the in game enjoyment!
Want playing time-
outperform your teammates
Want respect-
outwork your teammates
Want admiration-
lead your teammates
Want loyalty-
love your teammates
(4) We want Sydney, Carter, Cooper & Cash to be happy & have a normal childhood. We want to give a sick child hope & a chance at a better life. We want to hold on to Crew’s memory & not let him fade away. We want to thank everyone who has been kind & supportive.
God bless
I throw 500-700 BP pitches per day, 5 days a week this time of year. I’m 41
For me, throwing almost daily is better than throwing 2-3 days a week & resting in between
IMHO players get hurt more often from babying their arm between games than from throwing hard/too much in games
A recruiting service was encouraging parents to start signing players up for their college showcase at 13/14 years old
Telling parents that coaches like to track improvement in showcase stats year to year
College coaches do not care about your showcase stats from middle school
Advice for everyone in the stands:
If you think you could coach them better, pick up a clipboard and get after it! If you could umpire better, suit up! If not, shut up, sit back & enjoy the game. If you can’t relax, find somewhere else to be!
How to ruin a hitter
1 Place mental constraints on a hitter’s potential (ex. “You’re not a power hitter”)
2 Force the same plate approach on everyone (ex. “We practice hitting everything low oppo”)
3 Make practice too simple & predictable
4 Criticize every unsuccessful swing
Former player I coached was realistically the 10th/11th best player on his 12u team. 4 years later he was the 1st from that team to commit to college (D1). 2nd team all state as a senior. Dad stayed positive through his younger year struggles & prioritized long term development.
You can’t hate Vandy because of the NCAA’s decision. Corbin built a powerhouse because he’s a life coach as much as a baseball coach. Its VANDY. Rated 96/100 academically in the SEC where sports is king
There’s only 1 reason to hate on Vandy.
The Whistler. That guy SUUUCKKKKS.
We’re headed down for Crew’s MRI. So impressed with the staff here at the hospital. Their teamwork & communication skills are top notch. Thankful for them.
Q from a coach:
How do you help a hitter who hits well in the cage but gets paralyzed at the plate, and won’t swing the bat in games?
If you know a hitter (or lineup) who suffers from this, I have 4 simple actions you can take to help them break out.
A short thread 🧵
“I don’t want to strike out” is not a plan.
Here’s a thread with 5 simple strategies to help you plan your attack & manage your emotions to get more balls in play-
My son Crew passed in 2019. Tough times. Days are brighter now, but we still struggle with his absence.
People say a cardinal appears when an Angel is near. I don’t remember seeing them often before.
Now, we see them multiple times a week at home or out at random places…
Players who don’t play after high school because they are “too good” for D2/D3/JUCO baseball end up lying about how good a player they were in high school for the next 40 years.
What if the school coach, travel team coach, private training coach & athlete all communicated & worked together for the best interest of the team & athlete
High school season that team’s the priority
Travel season that team’s the priority
Off-season, training is the priority
On avg, Kids receive 400+ negative communications from adults & peers per day & only 40 positive or encouraging responses per day.
Consider how draining that must be mentally!
Taking responsibility to be more positive & encouraging to my family, athletes & the people around me.
(3) Thank you to the staff of Methodist Children’s Hospital for continuing to provide him with loving care.
We are grateful for our family and friends who have stepped up to care for us & our kids in this time of need...
The anti rollover swing. Mookie’s left elbow stays up well after impact, holding off the rotation of the forearms. This keeps the bat head on its ascending arc longer. When the lead elbow folds down before contact, the hitter will tend to cut the ball. Great drill feel.
When I walked into the gym at 5:00am for the 1st time I expected a ghost town. Surprised to find 20 people waiting on me.
False assumption that I had unique desire & drive to get up early.
Reminder:
You’re not special for working hard & other hard workers wont be impressed.
Successful head coach of a nearby D1 program rarely talks mechanics. Views almost every hitting prob as a timing/decision issue:
After a bad at bat-
“Were you early or late?”
“Did you swing at a good pitch to hit?”
Simple & effective way to make meaningful in game adjustments
(1) My wife & I have received an influx of followers on various social media channels. We appreciate everyone who wants to connect with us to offer their love & support...
Dan Heefner stood in front of Texas high school baseball coaches & said they have a batted ball outcome goal of 95+mph at 15°. They focus on it when hitting off the tee, in BP & in games. DBU is playing in their 6th straight regional final.
My dad instructed me to keep water dripping in our house on nights it was at freezing when I was growing up even though we rarely had temps under 30° in south Texas. Followed his teachings last night & we have flowing water. My neighbor’s pipes froze. I finally feel like an adult
Introduced our 5 & 7 year old boys to the best tool to develop ground ball fielding skill. A garage door/brick wall & foam/tennis ball. Last 3 days they’ve been excited to field dozens of balls. They Got home from family Xmas pictures & went out for a few dozen reps before dinner
Parents:
The way you talk about your kid’s teammates & coaches will shape how they interact with peers & authority figures for the rest of their lives.
Be cautious with criticism. Generous with praise & empathy. Be the example.
Mookie Betts is 5’9” 180lbs. He has four 3 home fun games in his career a Red Sox record. Leads MLB this season w/11 dingers. Guys his size in HS & college are routinely told they’re too small to hit homeruns. Betts on the other had parents who encouraged him to swing for fences
Become a better hitter cheat sheet.
-Sleep 8 hours each night
-Workout first thing in the morning
-Swing a bat as fast as you can every day
-Hit a moving ball every day
If you want your kids to love baseball- Don’t put your focus on their play, get holistic.
Talk about baseball history, great players & games. Watch baseball movies & play MLB The Show together. Go to high school, college & pro games. Buy them a jersey of their favorite player.
Crew’s vitals are stable. A ventilator is breathing for him. They are working on stabilizing his body before an MRI to determine the extent of brain injury
Our son Crew stopped breathing last night. They got his heart beating & he was airlifted to Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio. He is in intensive care. We need your prayers.
Our family set up this gofundme to help w/expenses
(2) Crew fought bravely, so we could spend this time together. We’re so blessed to have been here with him.
Thank you to the first responders and staff at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for bringing him back & giving us hope...
Reminder for the post-game drive home: Cancel the lecture!
0-3 feels like 0-30 when you’re a kid. Your athlete already has a lot of negative self-talk going on inside their head.
Remember how you feel when you struggle in life & how little criticism helps.
Be empathetic!
Theres one line in Moneyball (I think it’s a Joe Morgan line) that opposes analytics and I think its great.
Something like-
“Stats & tendencies will hold up over a 162 game season, but for one game, one at bat, you can throw statistics out the window.”
Feel for the game
I was never allowed to question my coaches when I was a player. Not allowing players to ask questions is a coach’s attempt to assert dominance & protect their ego.
Now, I encourage players to ask questions when they are uncertain about our philosophy or methods.
Trust > ego
