10 years from now "Release Efficiency" will be as common a term in basketball as "Club face angle" is in golf. In order to gain an advantage in learning and development we first need to be able to quantify. Once we can quantify shooting mechanics, learning will accelerate.

One of the best shooters in the world would "pre-shoot-around shoot, and post-shoot-around shoot". The best shooters always shoot the most. Always. If you want to get closer to that level you have to out shoot the best shooter you know.

Don't compare your shot to NBA players by FEEL. Take video of yourself and see what you are ACTUALLY doing, not what you THINK you are doing. There may be difference. If you need help identifying weaknesses now I can analyze you shot for you. LINK ON BIO - Video Shot Analysis

Patience is key... You won’t change a habit in one day. You won’t become a 40% 3pt shooter in one workout. You won’t got from bench player to starter in one practice. But if you consistently work, great things are possible.

Understand the player your team needs you to be. 9 dribbles to shoot a long contested shot while your teammates are standing is probably not what they need. Be ready to catch and shoot or take two hard dribbles to create something.

This is why I don’t concern myself with what is “natural” for poor shooters. Doing what feels “natural” has led them to being a poor shooter. We need to build new habits, and to do that you might have to do something that uncomfortable in the beginning.

I don’t stress 500 makes in a day to be a great shooter. 100-200 shots with focus on a bad habit will go a lot further, especially for younger or weaker shooters. Better to give laser focus to your weakness for 45min than to just repeat your same shot for 2hrs. - @CoachDaveLove

Form shooting doesn't need to be stationary. And shooting with movement doesn't need to be game speed. This is a 3rd day working with a player. We are adding reads and movement, but still working on details within his form.

If you can make 80% of your FTs, and 40% of your 3s in games, shoot it however you want. But if you can’t, your shot is too complicated and you need to simplify. This means better mechanics. More energy up in the air and at the hoop.

Form shooting is not just shooting slowly or from close in. Form shooting is shooting with extreme focus on the details within the shot. If you don’t know the detail you are focussing on, or you aren’t holding yourself accountable to doing it, you are wasting your time.

Avoid “Zero Threat Position” Can’t really pass or dribble, plus the ball is exposed. Can’t really shoot either. Will either be a flat shot, or need to either lower the ball to generate power, or raise it to get under the ball (if you are strong enough)

🎥Video from one of my Inner Circle Members. 💡Form shooting with a Read/Decision. 🔗Player is working to tie the reaction to a new habit. 🧰Repetition without repetition. 📖Read the feet, remember the micro skill, simplify/complicate as needed.

Want to prove to me you are a good shooting coach? Show me tangible evidence the players you work with regularly got better. Until you can do that, you are just a theoretical coach, and theories aren’t that important. Results are.

I pay a lot of attention to the rotation of the ball. Not because the rotation matters so much, but because it indicates where the player pushed the ball and whether it has a chance to go consistently straight.

Take the same idea and apply it to form shooting. Stop doing stationary form shooting and start form shooting after different types of movement. Hops, steps, pivots. Play with the speed of the shooting motion to make sure you get whatever habit you are working on correct.

Spend less time dribbling the ball straight into the floor and more time learning how to MANIPULATE the ball Push, pull, retreat, cross etc… Stationary handles are good but the game requires your body to move with the ball. Work on the real game! 🏀

What causes a flat shot? This is something I go into in the first day of my online workout program "7 Days to Better Arc". But once you know WHY your shot is flat, you need a progression of drills to help you change the habit. Get my progression. Get BETTER LINK ON BIO

I hear all the time... “You can’t change a players shot in season” The younger the player, the more I would personally ignore this “rule”. Young players are changing their shot on a daily or weekly basis anyways. Might as well change it for the better.

Not everyone is entitled to shoot 3s. If you can't do it with good form then you are just practicing habits that make you worse. Here are my thoughts on how you can increase your range:

Arc has a little to do with legs and follow through, and a lot to do with hand position and set point. Make sure you understand how to truly create better arc.

Lots of new drill content coming in the next week. This is my first building-block for form shooting. I use about 4-5 variations of form shooting, this is usually the first. More details coming soon.
