In post-Dobbs America, some girls can travel hours to get an abortion; some can't. This is the story of one of them.
She was raped. The nearest abortion was nine hours away. Now, she's a mom. Soon, she'll start seventh grade.
The story of a mother who sprinted, barefoot, to Robb elementary and begged to sit with her murdered 10-yr old daughter so she wouldn't be alone.
Don't look away from this story. One year since Uvalde:
Another thing: voting is a habit. Millennials and Gen Z have supercharged their turnout in every election since 2016. By now that's three national elections, plus more off-cycle races. These young ppl are moving from sporadic voters to habitual voters
To those who have asked how to help Ashley, the 13-yr old rape survivor who just had her baby in Mississippi:
Ashley's mother Regina has started a GoFundMe. I have confirmed that all funds will go directly to Regina, Ashley and Peanut. Please share:
Matt Gaetz on the House floor: "It is going to be difficult for my Republican friends to keep calling President Biden feeble while he continues to take Speaker McCarthy's lunch money in every negotiation."
To me the saddest and scariest part of the missing

vessel is the kid. The four other passengers are all lifelong explorers. This is just a 19-year old kid who was going on a tourist thing with his dad. Can't stop thinking about it.
It looks like Ohio Issue 1 is going to fail in Delaware Co. (northern Columbus burbs), which has voted Republican in every presidential race since 1916 and didn't even vote for Sherrod Brown in 2018.
Effective Altruism— the movement dedicated to doing good better— has been under scrutiny since the fall of SBF.
But seven women told me that EA also has a hostile culture for women, one in which sexual misconduct is tolerated or rationalized away.
This is bc of *policy choices.* Over the last 30 years, choices made by politicians in their 60s, 70s & 80s have made it economically difficult for younger ppl to get a toehold in life, which makes it harder for them to have kids, which leads to...this
The U.S. population is older than ever, with a record-high median age now over 38. In 1980, the median was 30.
The new census data adds to the evidence that an aging population poses challenges for the work force, the economy and social programs.
Exclusive: Will MacAskill and other EA leaders had been personally and repeatedly warned about SBF's sketchy business ethics as early as 2018.
They apparently dismissed those concerns, and went on to accept tens of millions in donations from FTX.
You simply must read
@EricCortellessa
's interviews with Trump. If he wins, he wants to:
-deport 11m immigrants, via detention camps and military
-allow red states to monitor women's pregnancies
- fire US attorneys who don't follow his prosecutorial orders
Biden's re-election launch with an emphasis on "freedom" as a Democratic value sounds a whole lot like what Pete Buttigieg was saying all over Iowa in 2019 and 2020
"It’s this white knight savior complex... Like: we are better than others because we are more rational or more reasonable or more thoughtful.”
EA “has a veneer of very logical, rigorous do-gooderism,” she says. “But it’s misogyny encoded into math.”
Please read this note from Ashely's mom Regina.
If you are at all moved by the story of the 13-year old rape victim who just had a baby, you can donate to their verified GoFundMe to help them raise the baby and relocate closer to family.
Link is here:
These women told me that Effective Altruism's overwhelming maleness, its professional incestuousness, its subculture of polyamory and its overlap with tech-bro “rationalist” groups have combined to create what they describe as a “cult-like” dynamic.
Regina told me today that the family will use these funds for clothes, milk, diapers and necessities for Peanut, and to relocate away from the rapist and closer to family so that Ashley can get a fresh start.
To those who have asked how to help Ashley, the 13-yr old rape survivor who just had her baby in Mississippi:
Ashley's mother Regina has started a GoFundMe. I have confirmed that all funds will go directly to Regina, Ashley and Peanut. Please share:
Latest Parent Files: how parenthood changed Pete Buttigieg.
We talked about how fatherhood shifted his approach to ambition, and what it was like to be ridiculed for taking paternity leave at a moment when his infant son was in serious medial distress
@MoiraDonegan
And Ashley's mother has started a GoFundMe to help them raise Peanut and relocate away from the rapist, so Ashley can get a fresh start. I've confirmed that all funds go directly to the family:
Since FTX collapsed, there's been a chorus of voices asking: how much did the Effective Altruist brain trust know about SBF, and when did they know it?
The answer: quite a lot, and quite early.
New break in the case of "Ashley," the 13-year old who was raped, now has a five-week old baby, and will soon start 7th grade.
Clarksdale police have arrested a suspect for her rape. DNA points to the same person her family originally ID'ed to police.
Bryan Johnson thinks he's going to live forever by removing his brain from the management of his body and allowing his life to be ruled by an algorithm instead. He sacrificed his free will for (alleged) immortality.
I went to see if it was worth it
A.G. Sulzberger on how the requirement for journalists to write ever more and more stories per day has inverted the out-in-the-field reporting/in the office split:
MS abortion ban has a rape exception, but it’s largely theoretical. There’s no clear process for getting an exception. Multiple state agencies ignored my requests to explain the how one is granted. Ashley’s mom didn’t even know a rape exception existed
I pray to God that my daughter sucks at sports for exactly this reason... an absolutely collossal waste of time for literally everybody involved. You can build sportsmanship and make friends and get exercise without driving to Paramus at 4am
If you're wondering why America seems stuck in a gerontocracy and why young voters are so angry and disillusioned about it.... four years ago I wrote a whole book about the looming generational war in American politics and folks, it's happening
This excellent analysis comes closest to what I saw when I spoke to Tucker extensively for my profile— Tuckerism isn’t an ideology, it’s a posture, It’s not a political identity, it’s a contrarian reflex. And it’s extremely appealing to young conservatives
I'm so excited to host

I could write the inverse of the NYMag parenting article as one of the only ppl in my group of friends with a kid... being the only parent in a group of non-parents is also a wild ride! ppl compare my baby to their dog.
Effective Altruism is rooted in a promise of using reason and evidence to "do good better."
But seven women told me they experienced sexual misconduct within the movement. Here's just some of what they said:
The age question isn't just about Biden/Trump: from RBG to Feinstein to the talented young ppl who leave politics because there's no path forward for them, gerontocracy affects everything
It's much more complicated than "Joe Biden old."
It's about a growing sense of despair that comes from a sclerotic political establishment that has, for years now, refused to grow with the rest of the country.
If you're wondering why America seems stuck in a gerontocracy and why young voters are so angry and disillusioned about it.... four years ago I wrote a whole book about the looming generational war in American politics and folks, it's happening
This is very smart and super helpful! A searchable database of the private and public sector investments generated by Biden's three big laws: the IRA, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Infrastructure bill. *AND IT'S SEARCHABLE BY DISTRICT*
terrible news… we’ve just discovered that our toddler may have Bad Candy syndrome. Just watched her grab a Tootsie Pop from a bowl full of Reese’s… her bucket is full of Whoppers and random suckers you’d get at the dentist… please send thoughts and prayers
Last year at a wedding, Evan Gershkovich's friends asked if he was scared to be reporting in Russia.
"I’m not scared,” he said. “My American citizenship protects me. I’m an accredited journalist.”
How his American dream became a Russian nightmare:
Biden is "at the very sunset of his life, let alone his career,” Phillips told me. “There are not many 80-plus-year-olds in leadership positions in any category, in any industry, in any capacity around the world.”
Biden now talking about access to preschool for 3-4 year olds… probably the single most popular policy implemented in NYC over the last 10 years. This is a no brainer!
Jennifer Lame is a normal 30-something mom of young kids who is just SO great at her job that she edits Chris Nolan and Noah Baumbach’s movies… she told me on

This happened right around when he was supposed to go back to work. So while critics were chattering about whether Buttigieg should have taken paternity leave, he was wondering whether this was all the time he would ever get with his son.
Also: I had a baby when I was 32, w a job and a husband, pretty standard. But people still acted like I was giving up my youth, or my career, or compromising my future by having a baby "too early." Idk, so far it's pretty fun? Still employed fwiw!
I could write the inverse of the NYMag parenting article as one of the only ppl in my group of friends with a kid... being the only parent in a group of non-parents is also a wild ride! ppl compare my baby to their dog.
Very smart ad from

highlighting the truth at the core of generational politics: what happens to Gen Z in their formative political years will shape their politics for life
I'm running for Congress.
We need a new generation of leaders in Washington who understand exactly what's at stake in this moment. We just can't wait to end gun violence, secure our rights, protect our democracy, and save our planet.
Join me in the fight for our future.
I'm launching a new interview series: The Parent Files.
It's not about breastfeeding or discipline styles; it's about how parenting shaped the people who shape the world.
First up: NY Gov Kathy Hochul, who had to leave her dream job to have her kids:
Both of his twins had RSV when they were tiny infants. At one point, his daughter Penelope got better, but his son Gus got worse. Doctors worried he wasn't going to make it.
An hour and 20 mins into this GOP debate, they still haven’t asked about abortion, even thought the GOP lost ANOTHER abortion election…*checks notes*… last night
Before and after the mutiny at Alameda, at least three different people raised serious concerns about SBF with MacAskill in 2018. They specifically flagged his lying, his unethical business practices, and inappropriate relationships with employees
@clhubes
Yepppppp! I had mine in November of 2021, right at the height of Omicron, which was terrible because EVERYONE had covid but also everyone was *over it* so nobody who didn't have a newborn wanted to be careful at all
SBF's fellow EAs at 2018 Alameda realized he was unethical, duplicitous, and negligent. They accused him of "gross negligence," "misreporting numbers” and “failing to update investors on poor performance," according to an internal doc. Most of them quit.
I reached out to the MS AG's office, the Board of Medical Licensure, the state Medical Association to ask them how a rape exception is granted. None responded.
If I couldn't figure out how to get a rape exception, how could this girl and her family?
Mitch McConnell is booed, and drowned out by chants of “retire, retire, retire”, for five minutes straight as he tries to talk to his own constituents in Kentucky.
if I was a fashion editor I would simply assign a beat called "Pants???" where you assign a pulitzer-prize winning investigative reporter to figure out which pants you're supposed to wear and where to buy them
every time you watch someone win an Oscar, you’re watching somebody achieve their lifelong dream. Every single Oscar acceptance speech is likely the highlight of that person’s life. It’s the best.
to all the guys who are like "well actually it's pretty standard for deep-sea military equipment to be steered by a gameboy"... sorry no that actually makes it worse
I asked Hillary Clinton about Dianne Feinstein. She said that "we cannot afford to have [Feinstein's] seat vacant."
"All these people pushing her to retire: fine, we get no more judges? I don’t think that’s a good tradeoff.”
This is a fascinating graph. You'd think that a declining birthrate means that more families have 1 child, but actually, it's that more families are having 0 kids.
Almost 35%— a significant plurality— of women 25-44 have never given birth.
The warnings stemmed from the 2018 mutiny at Alameda, which started as an explicitly EA trading firm; founded, funded, and staffed by EAs, and built to "earn to give."
Thrilled to have
@TimAlberta
on Person of the Week this week. We talked about growing up in the church, his own spiritual journey, and his investigation into how and why so many white Evangelical Christians came to worship Trump.
One striking stat:
Thousands of new jobs are coming to AZ thanks to new semiconductor plants built thanks to Biden's $52b CHIPS Act.
But only 25% of AZ voters think Biden is responsible for it... 29% credit the companies, 34% say they're "not sure"
*THIS! THIS! THIS!*
the "smarter" you are about politics, the dumber you are. Political "experts" are often drawing conclusions from data sets/wonky policies that are invisible or irrelevant to the normal voter. And normal voters decide elections
We now know pretty conclusively that the young voters that surged in 2018 have kept up their hard-D voting habits in 2020 and 2022, meaning that millennials and Gen Z have spent the last 6 years building a HABIT of voting.
I wrote a whole book about WHY
Vivek's "the climate change agenda is a hoax" is... not going to help him win young people.
Young Americans overwhelmingly understand that climate change is real.
To be clear: none of the early Alameda employees say they anticipated a fraud at the scale and scope of the alleged fraud at FTX. Nobody says they witnessed or warned abt specific criminal behavior. At the time, there were no customer funds to be stolen.
I would contend that the printer industry failed us as a generation. Have you encountered a printer in the last 20 years that is easy to set up and use, relatively affordable, and just consistently works without constant maintenance and fussing? I have not!
Johnson thinks his anti-aging routine falls somewhere btwn the Renaissance and the invention of calculus in the pantheon of human achievement. He compares himself to Magellan. He says it is "the most significant revolution in the history of Homo Sapiens."
There’s been lots of surprise (and hurt) at some of the activist left’s immediate response to the massacre in Israel
my piece on WHY parts of the activist left have turned so far against Israel
"I have always defended the right to criticize Israel, even very harshly, and not be accused of antisemitism... There's a difference btwn leveling the harshest criticism at Israel, and celebrating the murder, torture and rape of innocent people.”

Absolutely thrilled to talk to

Evan Gershkovich's arrest was a "watershed moment" that illustrated Russia's complete disregard for international norms, his friend Polina Ivanova told me.
“It wasn’t that Evan’s work had changed. It was that Russia changed.”
Still, the 2018 Alameda mutiny foreshadowed what was to come.
"I was shocked at how much of what came out about FTX rhymed with the concerns we raised in the early days,” says one person. “It was the same thing. All of the same problems.”
Al-Shifa Hospital, a sanctuary amidst the rubble in Gaza City, is now wrestling with a looming crisis — power cuts that could cut short numerous lives.
Would literally rather talk about ANYTHING other than adequate academic citations... I'm not in school anymore FOR A REASON... remember when Eric Adams pretended he lived in his son's apartment and that all the hot dogs and sneakers were his?
