Free Press sports writer. Focus on football, basketball, high school, college and some pros. Raised 2 daughters so not much you can say that hurts my feelings.
I no longer have to wear a mask, which is nice, but if one life was saved over the last year because of that minor inconvenience, I'm really glad I did. And when I don't feel well in the future, I know it's not that big of a deal to put on a mask when I'm around others.
This morning was probably the first time in 9 months that high-school activities directors could wake up and not worry about one of their teams. Really appreciate all the area ADS and the job they've done to make this season as good as it could be.
In personal news, I recently received a title promotion. I will now be known as GRANDPA. Promotion won't take effect until the fall. Financial terms haven't been announced (but I think this will cost me).
North Mankato's Andrew Bruggeman has been selected as one of the officials for tonight's gold medal game at Olympics. Finland vs. Russia, 10 p.m., USA network.
As long as I vote, will always remember Michele Goettl, longtime election judge at N. Mankato station. Always first to greet me each election. Not same without her. Funny how you remember the little things like that.
So far, the Marshall coach has yelled "holy cats" and "goodness gracious." Nice break from some of the stuff I've heard while sitting on the sideline at Bresnan in my time.
Tonight is my last varsity officiating gig of the season. It goes by so fast. Thanks to all coaches and ADs that have allowed me into their gyms to share the high-school basketball experience. It's been lot of fun.
If you're aspiring, young coach, watch sideline demeanor of MVL's Craig Morgan and Springfield's Lance Larson. Don't spend whole game yelling at officials. Just coaching their teams.
So proud of wife. Spent last 2 days worrying about kids at her school. She just left to spend few hours at school, prepping for challenging couple weeks. She will lead her school through this crisis.

Sleepy Eye girls basketball coach, and former MSU player, Ryan Hulke has stepped down to spend the next two years watching his son play at Byron. Done remarkable job with that program. Won't have trouble finding another coaching job in 2 years if that's what he wants.
Shout out to many officials brethren who are working multiple games at different sites today in order to help get these games played. Seems like just about every official is maxing out on games, with only month left in the season. The grind is worthwhile.
@MSHSLjohn
This is unbelievable. We truly are reaching the end of high school sports. If coaches such as Boelter are run off, who is qualified to coach athletes? So sad.
Stopped by West football practice. Former MSU stud Nate Gunn is coaching running backs. Seems like good hire. As I remember, he could run the football.
It was predictable that the Vikings would release
@athielen19
, but it's still sad to see. His story was amazing. The way he conducted himself at MSU and with Vikings was classy and respectful. He is everything good about sports and hope he can finish his career as he wants.
It's going to be imperative that schools, coaches, athletes, fans act appropriately this fall or that could end all high-school sports this school year.
Sounds like 150 fans will be allowed at indoor sports events when things get going Jan. 14. Hope good portion of those tickets go to fellow students, who add important piece of game-day atmosphere.
So many peers being let go across the country, I wonder where it stops. Nobody to write about high schools? Small colleges? We're losing ability to celebrate local events, achievements, etc.
Maybe I'm missing something, but today's announcements on high school sports was encouraging. Thought it was likely that some sports would be eliminated this season. Everybody gets some chance to play, even if it's different than past.
For second straight game, I leave gym wondering how Waseca girls won the game. We're just not used to see actual defense-first basketball. Waseca has scored 70 points in the last two games and won both. It really is amazing.
For those who want Zimmer fired, a week ago you thought he was coach of the year. Just because a pro sports team loses a game, it doesn't mean people have to be fired.
30 years ago, never really planned on having children. Wasn't really dad material at the time. But today, youngest goes off to college and struggling to figure out what I'll do without both daughters at home.
Three years ago, Zack Annexstad was injured early in season at West and couldn't get back on field when healthy. Now he's starting for Gophers. Athletics is strange world.
I've never been a wrestler, haven't really followed it closely for 25 years. But looking at photos, when a kid wins a state title in wrestling, it must be the most rewarding feeling in sports.
There's nothing like a conversation with MSU heavyweight Darrell Mason, a national champion, to pick up your spirits. Might be the happiest, most positive and real athlete I've interviewed in a long time. Column coming up later this week.
Christmas will always be the toughest holiday for me, but I couldn't be happier to spend this week with family and friends. To everyone who follows along here, have blessed Christmas day.
