🧵 How to build a great life (17 things I’ve learned)
I’ve run hard my whole life—always charging forward, rarely looking back. But 50 hits you different. It’s caused me to pause & reflect. ⬇️
In 1989 I randomly sat next to a cute girl at college orientation. I mustered the courage to say hi. I’ve been married to that girl for 26 years.
In 1999 a friend invited me to try rock climbing. I said yes and discovered a life-long passion.
In 2017 while sitting in a board
The most fun I ever had negotiating a salary:
Years ago I hired a guy to a junior marketing role. He was a bike mechanic with no relevant experience, but he had an engineer’s mind and was funny as heck.
I asked him to call me to discuss compensation…
You want your people to be beyond satisfied.
It’s not just about being generous, it’s good business. It puts a an intangible but powerful dynamic in place.
The ROI on good people, properly motivated, is tenfold.
Within a few years he ran digital marketing, making six figures.
I’m pretty sure he would have taken a bullet for me.
Here’s my point:
When it comes to people—especially those with high potential—don’t bargain shop.
You’re negotiating against yourself.
I'm at an age (51) when the divergence in biological age is extreme.
Some of my peers are as healthy as 20-somethings and others look & act 70.
It’s the result of a million little choices compounded over decades.
Make good choices a habit—your 51 year old self will thank you.
My wife and I recently had dinner with a billionaire couple. When they got married the guy was dead ass broke. His business—which he funded with credit cards—had just failed.
I asked his wife what she saw in him. Her answer was immediate and just one word:
“Character.”
She

Robinhood’s CEO whiffed on what may have been the *biggest PR opportunity in business history*. He could have become a legend overnight, creating the Tesla of financial services by playing a different game.
Here’s how he should have handled it 👇
A younger guy recently asked me a really smart question:
“What’s one thing you’d tell your 30-year-old self to do differently for health & longevity?”
This one is a no brainer:
I’d invest 5+ hours a week into MOBILITY training.
In fact, I’ll take it a step further…
“I’m never late. I’m never frenzied.
If you’re frenzied, it’s YOU.”
In my 30 years in business I've worked directly with hundreds of entrepreneurs & C-level execs, several self-made billionaires, and even a few icons.
What I observed—which may seem counterintuitive to some—is:
—Nordic-style cabin in the mountains
—Reading, writing, creative projects
—Barn with climbing/fitness setup
—Sauna + nearby stream
—Family & close friends
—Travel 3 mo. a year
—Challenging work
—Fast Internet
—Healthy food
—Good coffee
—Dog
