CityNews has learned a number of Edson residents are in Edmonton ICUs following a 'get COVID' party -- in an attempt to achieve herd immunity.
The details tonight at 6 and online

Premier Jason Kenney says since the Restrictions Exemption Program (don't call it a vaccine passport) announcement last night, vaccine bookings in the system have tripled.
Amber is one of the best damn journalists in the country.
We need eyes on what's going on. The fact that the RCMP arrested journalists witnessing this is chilling and unacceptable.
Well, the fact that pediatric surgeries are now being postponed and health care workers are studying up on triage protocols has pretty much broken me after a long week, so I'm logging off Twitter dot com for the weekend.
Take care of yourselves and each other.
Can't say I understand why someone would WANT to create a constitutional crisis in the midst of a health care capacity crisis due in part to a Covid crisis and opioid crisis amid the backdrop of a climate crisis, racism crisis, etc. Etc. But here we are.
Law professor Ubaka Ogbogu is calling on the premier to delete a Facebook post and apologize.
This is one of many examples where the premier has singled out and attacked academics, which has led to harassment and intimidation.
I'll add that it is defamatory to call me deranged and to refer to me as a NDP law professor. Without a retraction and public apology, I will seek to commence legal action against you.
What in the white supremacist hetero-patriarchy hell is this?
How could an essay that says woman should not pursue male careers because women are not equal and their role is to give birth because foreigners are going to "replace ourselves" be given an award and recognition?
This is just so messed up. 🤯
Read for yourself: the 3rd place winner of the UCP’s “Her Vision Inspires Essay Contest”.
Explain,
@HomeniukJ

Does this mean also that Alberta will not be using Evraz steel? Evraz provided steel for hundreds of kilometres of pipeline for KXL.
Its shareholders include Roman Abramovich, Aleksandr Abramov...
Now if Canada really wants to help defang Putin, then let’s get some pipelines built!
Alberta stands ready, willing and able to supply the energy needed to displace Russia from global markets.
Message to Ottawa and Washington: stop helping Putin and OPEC by killing pipelines.
Point of order has been called against Shane Getson. He compared the NDP appeasement of the federal Liberals to Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler and suggested the NDP rename themselves the "National Socialist Party."
"One UCP insider told me that when Kenney was away (very likely in Europe, although he has never confirmed that) there was no place to go for advice or direction. Ministers and staffers just froze in place or went on vacation themselves."
An Oilers season ticket holder for nearly four decades says recent COVID-19 health measures imposed by the Oilers Entertainment Group has turned him off for good.
At today's

update we learned the reason AB told N.L. to stand down on sending health care workers right now was not because the strain on the system was under control, but because projections show it's likely we won't see the peak until mid-to-late October.
Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Today, a candidate who compared CHILDREN to pieces of shit because of their gender — while spreading false information — is on the ballot.
I can't stop thinking about the fact that during the election campaign, reducing surgical wait time was a key UCP promise. And all throughout the pandemic the government said the goal was never Covid zero — it was to protect the health care system.
The RCMP Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team laid charges against a Calgary man and an Edmonton man in separate investigations over threats to elected officials online
A survey paid for by the public, that gathered public feedback, that will help inform whether the government will hold a referendum on a matter affecting the public is ... private.
Meta got back to me! A spokesperson said the Premier's Facebook page wasn't restricted, but one of the administrators faces restrictions.

No one deserves sexual harassment or sexual assaults. Nobody anywhere.
Not in the political arena, nor the hockey arena.
Not from a stranger, not from someone known or trusted.
I voted in advance, so no voting for me today.
One tip: the lines may look long due to the two-metre distancing, but it goes by fast.
Don't be intimidated if the polling station looks busy.
Huge relief. Daughter's Covid test came back negative. Very swift results.
Thank you to all the staff from the intake, to the swabs, to analyzing the tests and entering data.
I logged on today to see two wonderful things:
1) My account was recovered.
2) The video Arnold Schwarzenegger posted is breaking through to reach Russians.
Thank you to everyone who helped report. Thank you to Twitter for recovering this account so quickly.

Speaking on your Province. Your Premier. Premier Danielle Smith said the Bank of Canada said eliminating the carbon tax would reduce inflation by 16 per cent. The BoC said it would reduce inflation by 0.15 percentage points on an annual basis and 0.6 over the lifetime of the tax.
Why would the number of Covid patients in hospital be irrelevant if it means that bed is not available for someone needing a surgery, or who has been in a car crash, or giving birth, or is being treated for a stroke?
OK! Going to lock down the profile for a bit as a whole lot of people not previously interested in provincial politics all of a sudden are interested in engaging with me.
Happy to hear many perspectives, not interested in receiving abuse.
Got my winter tires put on yesterday and the guy said if there was an award for best timing for a tire change, getting it done the day before the first snowfall would earn me a medal. So I would like my millennial participation trophy for adulting, please.
Alberta 🤝 U.K.
A conservative party leader announced his resignation after three years and several scandals — including a boozy gathering while Covid restrictions were on effect — but will stay on as leader until the fall when a new leader is chosen.
"Hey! Y'know how we police are being criticized for our use of violence and defending property rather than people? Why don't we mix that with the trope that daughters are property to be controlled, deny their autonomy and beat their partner who threatens their chastity!"
I wonder how many people working physically intense jobs have substance use issues that started out as trying to treat the pain so they can keep working.
I think about the people trying to battle through a claim with WCB and how that affects them.

I think about that call a lot because I have a feeling a lot of the people who are living on the streets may have been injured at work, or whose body was too beat up to keep working, but were too young to retire.

“The words ‘never’, ‘passport’ and ‘open for good’ may go down in embarrassment and infamy.”
That's what UCP MLA Richard Gotfried said on Facebook.
He apologized for the time it took for the government to put in measures, saying he has been advocating since July 28.

Former Justice Minister Schweitzer says the blockades at Coutts are "110 per cent" what Bill 1 was made for. Says it will be up to law enforcement to make the decision on whether to use it.
Just now, when the premier was asked about NDP MLA Shannon Phillips resigning, in part due to division and disinformation, Smith said we haven't seen the same kind of extremes as we have in other jurisdictions and protests tend to be peaceful.
An undercover RCMP officer who infiltrated the protest group that blocked the border in Coutts, Alta., testified that one of the men facing trial said he was part of a “revolution” and that he was prepared to meet police “with resistance."

I listen to every episode of Your Province. Your Premier. and as there are conversations about pensions and homelessness, there is one caller from the March 11 episode who I've been thinking a lot about.
A Calgarian named Jonathan, who is a construction worker.

In Nov of '19 former Ukrainian President
@poroshenko
gave a speech in yeg stating that "
@jkenney
is the godfather of the modern Ukrainian army."
With projects like Operation Unifier, he considers our Premier to be the godfather of the forces who are fighting Putin today.
Saw this comment and realized it's a great teachable moment to explain why you wouldn't have seen this story on the 6 p.m. newscast.
So here's a thread on how the journalism "sausage" is made.
(No rude comments to this person I quote tweeted, please).

Incumbent Aaron Paquette declared by CTV Edmonton over UCP press secretary Tricia Velthuizen. The two are having a rematch as they ran against each other last time.

Hey! Thought I'd share some tips as a non scientist who sometimes reads scientific papers.
1) Has the paper been peer reviewed? Is it a pre-print (interpret with caution)? Or not submitted to a journal at all?
2) Have other researchers replicated the results?

Won't single out the person who said this, but trying to score political points by dunking on a female politician who has publicly stated she wanted to have kids, but was unable is not great! Don't do it!
A lot of people struggle with infertility. Criticize policy, not people.
Just a stream of consciousness thread, but I've been wondering about all those people who are reaching out, asking for help, sharing their problems, saying what solutions they need.

Heartbroken over what's happened in Jasper, but there are so many people to be grateful for.
Communication from Parks Canada has been phenomenal.
Ordinary people in Jasper who work in hotels and restaurants and maintaining water who stayed so long so firefighters could stay.
I remember when the LottoVax was announced, Dr. Hinshaw very specifically said all who had previously been vaccinated could enter the draw to avoid penalizing people who had already done the right thing.
The organization running the Canada Pension Plan (the CPP Investment Board) has a bone to pick with the Alberta Pension Plan Engagement Panel and a "failure" to hold meaningful consultations with the public.
I'd still like an answer on why they decided to target some of the most vulnerable people months after making a huge announcement about how their funding of this program is proof they're taking affordability seriously. And what's next on the chopping block?

Question I have the answer to now: how many of the wildfires this year are under investigation by RCMP because they're suspicious? 12. Out of 641 (or 647 per the wildfire app).
Personal/non-political thread:
I see a lot of people on my feed upset that a headline mentioned a Jeopardy! Contestant is a lesbian and asking why it's necessary.
It's important to me to see LGBTQ+ joy, EXCELLENCE and WINS.
Because these days there has been a lot of heavy news
One thing I can't stop thinking about is all the people on here describing kids being "mutilated."
I can't imagine having breast cancer at that age (or an adult, for that matter) to have strangers say something so cruel about it.
"No government can credibly say they're working towards a net-zero economy 2050 while blindly opposing a 2035 target for clean electricity."
Shots fired by Clean Energy Canada.
New Ethics Commissioner report just dropped.
This is the investigation into Education Minister Adriana LaGrange and the procurement of masks.

As someone who spent years listening to EMS and police calls on the scanner (including in the same newsroom as you for a time), I would say alcohol absolutely is a factor.
The people working hard to pretend booze in convenience stores is the *same* thing as injection sites where people use fentanyl, meth and crack is pretty looney. We have liquor stores on pretty much every corner in Edmonton, and I'll tell you that's not where chaos comes from.
Raise your hand if you're a woman who went to elementary in the 90s when there was a backlash against "overdiagnosis" of ADHD in kids, and as a girl your symptoms were different than stereotypes in boys 🙋🏻♀️🧵
Anyone expert who warned this was going to happen — or even anyone who dared to ask a question — was ridiculed and accused of being a fear monger and told to get over it. Or they were falsely accused of wanting "permanent lockdowns."
The Premier's prediction on that day was that by October we would have 75 per cent of the population vaccinated.
Today we have 58.1 per cent of the total population with two doses.
Asked on June 18 if Alberta had a contingency plan in case COVID-related hospitalizations begin to rise again, Premier Jason Kenney said "we just don't see that scenario."

Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller responding to the premier's complaints about asylum claimants in a thread here.
Calls the premier's statement "incoherent" and said she doesn't know what's on the table because Alberta has refused to come to the table.
Alberta has refused to be part of the provincial/federal working group we struck this year to deal with the fair distribution of asylum seekers in the federation so they would be unaware of what is actually on the table, including financial compensation.
Today is my daughter's first school picture day.
Instead of getting her photo taken, she's getting a Covid swab.
I've worked from home, take out instead of dining in, vaccinated twice, anything I can to give her as normal a life as possible.
It hasn't been enough.
I don’t know how parents of unvaccinated elementary students are coping right now. My daughter is doubled vaxxed and in university and I still worry. I can’t absorb the choices parents with little ones are facing.
Quite an extraordinary statement put out by Prime Contact, the parent company of Canadian National Public Research calling out CTV for publishing a story on a poll on consent for abortion for minors from a company that doesn't seem to exist.

Tried my best to explain the Free Alberta strategy, hear why they're angry. I've lived here my whole life, heard the grievances. I just have a hard time understanding why now?
Had my first-ever Covid swab today. I've been lucky enough to not be sick since March 2020.
Showed up 15 minutes before my 11 a.m. appointment. Didn't get out until 12:10 p.m.
Shout out to all the staff working hard at the assessment centre.
They're very, very busy.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would love to be announcing an "Alberta Builds" program, similar to the B.C. Builds program that was announced yesterday, says he wants to partner more. (Province has nobody at that announcement)
I watch the nightly UCP war room livestreams on LinkedIn and it's incredibly disturbing to see someone comment from a professional accountant (self-described "diversity champion") this type of garbage.
At least people called her out.
The Edmonton and Calgary Chambers of Commerce are calling on the province to explore the viability of a pharmacare plan with the federal government.

You're more likely to get myocarditis from Covid than the vaccine.
Being relatively young and/or fit doesn't mean you have *no* risk for serious outcomes.
Misinformation has deadly and devastating consequences.
In response to the premier's concerns about rural media not getting questions, Alberta government news conferences are run by government press secretaries and they determine the order of questions/who gets through.
