Jaylen Brown: “Energy in the Garden has been OK at best in the playoffs.”
He just called for Boston to bring it.
“I’m calling you guys out. Let’s make sure the Garden is ready to go. … When the Garden gets going there’s nothing like it.”
Brad Stevens said Marcus Smart came into the Celtics practice facility this morning and they got the chance to see each other. Said their relationship “will be forever.”
Tatum said Joe Mazzulla shows the Celtics a picture of a sand castle at every film session. You can build the best sand castle ever but then it washes away. The message: The Celtics need to build a new sand castle every day. Tatum said it’s kind of cheesy but the team bought in.
Brad Stevens said today that Evan Turner still hasn’t joined the Celtics to begin his assistant coaching duties.
Jayson Tatum in Turner’s Instagram mentions: “Lol yo when u coming to practice”
Marcus Smart, who recently lost his mother to cancer, gave an incredible answer about what basketball means to him as he deals with tragedy off the court.
After one of his biggest wins ever, Marc Gasol deciding to postpone his celebration to comfort Joel Embiid is some character revealing type stuff. Only a top-notch dude would do that.
Joe Mazzulla said he sent an email to former Celtics to ask them to come around the team. He wants to build an environment where the legends and past players come around frequently. Paul Pierce was here today.
Payton Pritchard throwing a garbage time off-the-backboard alley oop against Ime Udoka’s team is rich. Ime once got mad the Celtics kept feeding Pritchard late in a blowout win, suggesting they disrespected the game. That night, Pritchard hit a ton of 3s in front of a bunch of…
Marcus Morris said when he looks at the Celtics he sees a bunch of individuals. Said he sees everyone else having fun around the league, they don’t have fun.
“It hasn’t been fun for a long time.”
So at age 43 and with a fully torn MCL, Tom Brady beat Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes in successive games to win his seventh Super Bowl with a team that hadn’t made the playoffs in more than a decade before his arrival. Sheesh.
Jaylen Brown said there was nothing the 76ers could do with Jayson Tatum: “I think everybody should go buy some of the new JT (shoes) that he just dropped.”
Jayson Tatum said Grant Williams took more shots than anyone on the team: “I told him don’t get used to that.”
More seriously: “Grant won us a playoff game. A Game 7.”
Jaylen Brown on his message to Jayson Tatum after this series: "I just gave him a hug, man. ... As tough as it is, it's been a great year. It's been a great journey."
Kemba Walker said he doesn’t want Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown to adjust now that they’re all back on the court together. Walker said he’ll be the one to make the adjustments. He wants Tatum and Brown to stay super aggressive.
“I’ll figure it out.”
Marcus Smart recently found out his mother has cancer. He visited her briefly last week. She wants him with the Celtics. Told him it would bring a smile to her face to see him back on the court.
Horford said he’s gone through ups and downs shooting all season. Said it’s a part of being “an elite shooter.”
One media member laughed at that label.
Horford: “You’re laughing? You don’t think I’m an elite shooter? My numbers don’t support it?”
Media member: Yes they do.
Ime Udoka and Grant Williams played an April Fools joke where they faked a fight with each other. Udoka said none of the other players stepped in to break it up. He said a few players later indicated they wanted to see Williams get his ass kicked 😂😂😂
Jayson Tatum was asked about the difference of the crowd for the Celtics' first finals game in 12 years. It was pointed out to him that Paul Pierce was in the building: "Paul Pierce? We had Nelly. St. Louis was in the house."
Is Tatum getting better at taking over games?
“He is,” Kemba said. “I’m trying to encourage him more to do so. He’s just gotta become that killer, which he is. It’s so fun to watch him and Jaylen, man. It’s so fun to be a part of their growth.”
Kemba called those two special.
Jaylen Brown basically apologized to Kemba Walker after taking a quick shot during Kemba’s hot streak: “He ain’t gotta apologize,” Walker said.
“He took a great shot. He just missed. I didn’t want him to apologize. I wanted to keep my teammate confident.”
Derrick White only played 13 minutes. Payton Pritchard cut into Marcus Smart's second-half minutes. Ime Udoka spread the court, pulled Durant-Claxton into the corners, and let his best-shooting guards/wings cook Brooklyn's lesser defenders. Great adjustment by Udoka.
Jrue Holiday on what it will be like going back to Milwaukee tomorrow: “Uh, we’re a good team. We’ve beaten them before and I’m very confident we have a good chance to beat them again. So to be able to go back to Milwaukee should be fun. … I was there for three years and we did…
Jayson Tatum: "I spent a lot of time with Paul Pierce this summer, which was great. He was really motivated. Paul actually lost 15 or 20 pounds. ... It was cool to have him around. He told us a lot of stories about the championship team, a lot of stuff that we can try to apply to…
Very cool: The Celtics will honor Marcus Smart as tonight’s Hero Among Us for all of his work in the community over the years. His impact in Boston went far beyond basketball.
Jayson Tatum said all-NBA teams should be positionless. Said it doesn’t make too much sense that Embiid finished second in MVP voting but didn’t make first team.
Marcus Smart spent the first nine seasons of his career in Boston. He never missed the playoffs with the Celtics even after initially joining a 25-57 team. Heck of a tenure with Boston. Would have continued, too, in the other framework of the trade.
Incredible Joe Mazzulla moment just now.
He ended his press conference today like this: “Before I forget, no one’s ever asked me what my favorite scene from The Town was. I know you guys all know that’s my favorite movie but no one’s ever been curious about what my favorite…
Marcus Smart on the charge being overturned: “The excuse was I was late on the charge. ... Quite frankly I think we all know what was about. Giannis (would have had) six fouls.”
Jaylen Brown said he used to be a 7-year old in the nosebleeds watching games here. He said there could have been a 7-year-old tonight doing the same thing. “My message to him is good luck. I’ll be waiting.”
Robert Williams: "I'm just trying to be accountable for my team. We made it this far. I had a discussion with myself about pushing through this. I'm happy with how it's going. We'll worry about the injury after the season, but right now I'm still fighting."
Terry Rozier: "I thought the confetti was going to drop. No, I did. It was a big win, not trying to take nothing away from them. But I thought the confetti was dropping tonight."
Jaylen Brown said he’s not sure how he was supposed to react to Niang’s grab from the sidelines: “If I didn’t do anything, they probably would have played on. And here comes Scott Foster.”
Jaylen Brown: “Just a terrible game when my team needed me most.”
Said after Tatum’s injury, “My team turned to me to make plays, etc. and I came up short I failed. … I give credit to Miami but just a terrible job.”
From Celtics PR: Derrick White's buzzer-beater tonight was the second in NBA history by a player whose team was facing elimination and trailing at the time of the shot.
The other?
Michael Jordan over Craig Ehlo against the Cavaliers in the 1989 first round.
