Blimey. I'm honoured to be named as one of the
@BigIssue
's changemakers list for 2024 for my work advocating for refugees and migrants here in Folkestone on the Kent coast. I love this community; it's packed full of warmth & welcome and defies expectations
Dear
@SouthernWater
, here's a video of people bathing in the water off Folkestone today. They clearly didn't know you had discharged sewage into the sea. The information is hidden on your site, not mentioned on your Twitter feed. Utterly irresponsible behaviour from profiteers.
I'm still processing the fact that most of the people on the boat that got into trouble on Wednesday were Afghan. We abandoned that country to the Taliban, and then taunted people with the idea of safe routes that were impossible to access. It's sadistic behaviour.
There are around TWO HUNDRED CHILDREN MISSING and they have not rated even a mention on the 6pm
@BBCNews
. We do not know where these kids are. We don't know if they're being sexually abused, used as forced labour, we don't even know if they are still alive. Where is the outcry?
I can't imagine how grim it must be for trans people to constantly see their right to simply live their lives squabbled over, diminished, and used as a political football. Today and everyday I stand with my trans siblings. Trans rights are human rights.
Here's Priti Patel saying there have been "three hundred thousand and thirty four nine hundred and seventy four thousand tests". Yep. I'm sure the press will give her as hard a time as they gave Diane Abbott, right? Right??? 🤔
Thread 🧵The Times and the Telegraph have published stories about refugee adults 'pretending' to be kids. I would like to say this in response. As a qualified secondary teacher and someone who has worked with young people from a refugee background for about 17 years...
Over two hundred people turned out at short notice in Folkestone to demand that the government provide safe routes for refugees. People here don't want to see any more deaths. Enough is enough.
It's brilliant to see so many people wanting to see Ukrainian refugees given sanctuary in the UK. But if you didn't/don't feel the same way about refugees from Afghanistan or Sudan or Iraq then you need need to ask yourself why that is.
"Interviews with 16 children released from Manston revealed that even in the cases of some boys who had identity documents stating they were children, the Home Office changed their dates of birth to make them over 18."
They DELIBERATELY put them at risk.
SHARE THE HELL OUT OF THIS. Express has been forced to admit it LIED about adult asylum seekers pretending to be children. And this isn't half of it. If they reported on nos of cases overturned difference would be even greater. Real story: Kids are being put at safeguarding risk
We should all be deeply concerned that, rather than investigating the possibly 100s of children that have been assessed under these circumstances with little regard for their safeguarding, these 'journalists' have instead simply regurgitated Home Office press releases. Shameful.
This is one of the most important things I have ever asked you to do. On Monday MPs will debate the new Refugee Ban Bill - tell them
#StopTheBill
.
Please, do everything you can to be in Parliament Square at 6pm on Monday. If you can't be there please share the hell out of this.
...I have never in all that time met an adult I thought was pretending to be a child. I have met dozens of children who were wrongly assessed as adults though. I have seen children ripped out of foster placements and schools where they were settled, only for their...
The story, for those interested, is here and went up online shortly after 3pm today. Far too late for all those families swimming this morning to be aware.
Today the people of Folkestone Harbour ward had a clear choice between someone who stands shoulder to shoulder with refugees and those who want to close down all routes to asylum. They voted for the former. There are lessons here. Love wins.
We should all be absolutely furious about this. Clearsprings are a private company contracted by the government to provide asylum accommodation, such as Napier Barracks. The deal is worth £1 billion over 10 years. The directors just pocketed £28 million ⬇️
Not the fault of the local press I hasten to add. Very much the fault of
@SouthernWater
who should have gone above and beyond to make sure people were aware of this. It's shoddy and irresponsible.
...claimed age to finally be accepted years later. By that stage they have missed out on school and have been traumatised by the experience. I have seen children placed into adult facilities which is a massive safeguarding issue. This is happening more and more often....
...The recent report from HMI Chief Inspector of Prisons on the reception facilities at Dover said that interpreters were not used in age assessments and that staff carried out age assessments using hand gestures 🤦...
Incredibly moving vigil on the beach in Folkestone tonight to remember those who lost their lives in the Channel this time last year. Over 100 people out in the dark and the driving rain to honour their memory and demand safe routes. Huge thanks to all who supported
#ChannelVigil
I'm organising this event on Folkestone on Sunday. I'm fully expecting trolling and abuse from the far right, and I would really appreciate your support in building the numbers.
Can I ask for help please friends. I'm organising a candlelit vigil on Sunny Sands Beach in Folkestone on 24/11 at 6pm. This is to remember the 27 people who died crossing the Channel a year ago. Please can you share. The event page is here:
#SafeRoutes
Thread 🧵 Just seen a request from a journalist for someone who came across the Channel in a boat, is having difficulty with their claim for asylum, and who is fluent in English. They want them to do an interview tomorrow. I'm going to tell you why this is problematic ⬇️
Feeling numb hearing about more deaths in the Channel. We could FIX this overnight by offering access to safe routes. The idea pushed by the right, that every displaced person would head here, is a racist trope. Most displaced people stay in their region. Our response is shameful
The far right had a violent protest outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Liverpool last night. Let's be very clear - There is a DIRECT LINK between disgusting scenes like this and Braverman's description of desperate people arriving as an "invasion".
Big gathering in Dover at the candlelit vigil for the Kurdish-Iranian family who lost their lives attempting to seek asylum. Safe passage now. No more needless deaths.
@_KRAN_
#safepassage
Roger Gale, Conservative MP, on Radio 4 right now saying what many of us in the refugee sector suspected, that the dangerous overcrowding at Manston was a "done deliberately" and was a "policy decision".
The cruelty is the point.
Folkestone MP, Damian Collins - who VOTED TO ALLOW water companies to dump 💩 in our sea - says he's taking action by meeting with Southern Water. I think he knows he's facing a wipeout. Please join us at 11am on Sunny Sands tomorrow to say enough Tory 💩
I'm devastated at further loss of life in the Channel. For those of you in & around Folkestone who, like me, want to see safe routes implemented, I'm organising an event on Sat @ Sunny Sands Beach at 10am. Please help me to amplify. Facebook event page ⬇️
Ofsted are toxic. Their judgements are unreliable and they cause utter chaos. Finland has arguably the best education system in the world and no inspection system. It's crazy but they train teachers really well then trust them to get on with the job!
When I worked at Kent Refugee Action Network we warned again & again of the dangers these children were being exposed to. Many other orgs did same. I am full of the most extraordinary rage that they were let down this way by those meant to protect them.
In the darkest of times Folkestone lifts my spirits because our community always steps up to stand in solidarity with those who have been marginalised. Thank you to the lovely
@studioad_uk
for making himself available to take pictures tonight.
If, like me, you are appalled at the latest deaths in the Channel then please either come to this event in Folkestone tomorrow, or share the flier ⬇️, or ideally do both. Thank you friends.
Christ. No wonder they suddenly emptied the camp. If this turns out to be correct the Home Office directly caused this man's death. He came for sanctuary and died because Braverman was so determined to pantomime cruelty. Utterly despicable. She should face manslaughter charges.
The Home Office says the death of a man who had been held at the Manston migrant-processing centre may have been caused by a diphtheria infection. Initial test results processed by a local hospital for an infectious disease were negative, but a follow-up PCR test was positive.
Nick Robinson is absolutely correct (not words I say often) when he says Labour have failed to articulate a clear alternative to Patel's Rwanda plan. They should be laying out plan to create more safe & legal routes. They should be bright light in the dark not a flickering match.
The organisers have played a blinder. Instead of the usual speeches from the usual suspects we are hearing from people with lived experience of seeking sanctuary
#StopTheBill
The same people telling Greta she should have ignored T
@te
are the same people who tell bullied kids 'just ignore them and they will get bored.' It's an unacceptable response.
I wrote about Folkestone, & how the town has stepped up to welcome refugees for
@RedPeppermag
. There are wider lessons here for Labour Party. We need to address concerns AND offer positive lead. The people causing problems are at the top, not in dinghies.
Note to journalists reporting on Channel crossings. The word you are searching is "people". Those crossing the Channel are people. They are not "illegal migrants" or "suspected migrants", they are people. Take a look at how
@kentlivenews
approach this, and learn something.
Friends, can you give this a boost ⬇️ This Thursday it's a year since 32 people lost their lives attempting the Channel crossing. This vigil at 6pm on Sunny Sands beach in Folkestone is to remember them, & to keep fighting for safe routes. FB page is here
It was a very impromptu last minute event, but Folkestone people still turned out to say they want
#SafeRoutesNow
for those trying to reach the UK, and it made the local news. This town always steps up. As ever proud to be a part of this community.
Hi
@pritipatel
, this is great. But how do I explain to the brother of a man from the priority group, who is in hiding in Afghanistan, that somone from Ukraine can bring their sibling over but he can't? We need the same rules for all. Not a two tier system.
Six years
@jeremycorbyn
held a rally in Ramsgate and drew huge crowds. I spoke at the rally and called on people in Kent to organise against the far right. One of the proudest days of my life. I was honoured to stand with a good man who has always stood firm against racism.
Dear
@ukhomeoffice
can you URGENTLY explain how the advice below to British nationals in Afghanistan to leave immediately squares with your country guidance which states it's fine to return those who arrived as unaccompanied children back there?
So tired & angry at hearing of another death in the Channel, this time a man from Sudan. Given that Sudan was a British colony it is no surprise that some asylum seekers from there head to the UK. If you are saying we don't have a duty to help them I'm calling bullshit on that.
Ahem! Stop what you are doing and take two minutes to watch the ever excellent
@ZoeJardiniere
on Newsnight outlining how the government has deliberately manufactured an immigration 'crisis'.
2 minutes on Newsnight last night to say:
The government has deliberately created a crisis as a campaign tool
They have stopped processing asylum claims, letting numbers build up, in barges or hotels, just so at the next election they can say they’re the ones to fix it
#r4today
I cannot say it loudly enough, if this man turns out to have contracted diphtheria as a result of being deliberately kept in unsanitary conditions then Braverman should face manslaughter charges ⬇️⬇️⬇️
The people of Llantwit Major sound absolutely bloody lovely.
Even for most of those who are concerned about the housing development, he said, "they're like - 'yeah, but we don't want neo-Nazis here'".
Absolutely furious that - yet again! - we can't swim in the sea here in Folkestone. Our MP voted to allow this to happen - he's supposed to represent the people of this town yet votes to allow raw sewage to be discharged off our beaches. It's time people faced criminal charges.
***THIS IS TOMORROW***
Candlelit vigil in Folkestone on Kent coast to remember those that have lost their lives in the Channel, and to demand that safe routes are implemented. Please do all you can to amplify the event and build awareness. No more deaths! Safe routes NOW.
OK folks, there's only TWO DAYS until this important vigil on the Kent coast to remember those that have lost their lives in the Channel, and to demand that safe routes are implemented. Please do all you can to amplify the event.
The flowers that were brought to the
#SafePassageNow
vigil on Sunny Sands in Folkestone today have been taken to Dover, and laid at the memorial for all those who have lost their lives seeking sanctuary in the UK.
There is endless discussion of the Rwanda policy as a possible deterrent to people thinking of the UK as a destination. It isn't. It never will be. The government know that. They know. They don't care. They just want to perform cruelty for a small, specific audience at home.
...their trauma, to bare their souls, and then? Then do you provide them with aftercare or support? Do you provide them with someone who is a mental health specialist? You do not. Having made them unpack their trauma you leave them to deal with it. ⬇️
I'm really struggling with my mental health at the moment. Shout out to anyone else that finds this time of year particularly difficult. I forget how tricky I find it and every bloody year it takes me by surprise.
🔊 It's coming up to two years since at least 27 drowned in the English Channel. Many of us are still appalled by this, and by the fact that the environment has become even more hostile. Join us on 24 November at 6pm in Folkestone to say that we want accessible safe routes NOW.
...aftercare then you need to be a little bit more flexible in your idea of the perfect interviewee. Because retraumatising vulnerable people over and over again when it isn't necessary, when valid testimony can be sought elsewhere, well it isn't ok. You need to think about that.
Everyone who made that journey is traumatised. Everyone. That trauma will almost certainly have been compounded by the asylum process, and they have just been retraumatised with the news of the deaths in the Channel. Now YOU want them to be interviewed about it all, to reveal...
One of the young people I work with has been beside himself with worry about his niece & two nephews stuck at Kabul airport. They are unaccompanied kids & he's been calling everyone he can think of. He just phoned. They've been accepted onto a flight. I may have had a little cry.
Talked to Sky News earlier about Priti Patel blaming social media for channel crossings. I said that of course no one is making this dangerous journey because of a TikTok video. They're doing it because they have no other options. We need to open up safe and legal routes.
I'd much rather Labour were focusing on why people are shoplifting. When people simply can't make ends meet they will take desperate measures. Criminalising them does not help. Improving their lives and prospects does. Let's look at that, eh? Let's offer a vision of hope.
Under the Tories, over 1,000 shoplifting offences are being committed daily - while their shoplifter’s charter encourages police not to investigate thefts under £200.
Labour will scrap this rule and deliver 13,000 more neighbourhood police and PCSOs.
You know how most of the coverage of the Channel crossings seems to be hysterical scaremongering? Can we take a moment to appreciate
@kentlivenews
and the BRILLIANT way they are dealing with the issue. Absolutely exemplary. Other news outlets take note!
Brilliant to see one of these protests happening in Folkestone yesterday. Our community, like others around the country, is furious at raw sewage being dumped in our sea. It has to stop. It has to stop immediately. And the water companies must be made to pay out of their profits.
"Protests against dumping sewage in seas and rivers."
What a fantastic achievement yesterday for everyone involved. From lake Windermere to Falmouth and all points in-between. Huge round of applause to you all, people power in action. 👏👏👏
It's been a long week and I was really looking forward to a restorative swim tomorrow but yet again
@SouthernWater
have dumped shit in the sea at Folkestone. It's not an 'exceptional circumstances' thing. It's an 'every bloody time it rains' thing. They need to face charges.
Time and again I have suggested to journalists that they speak to someone who made the journey a few years ago, who has gone through the asylum process, and who has had time to process and deal with the trauma. Inevitably that suggestion has been rejected because...
@SimonJonesNews
It's still not mentioned on the
@SouthernWater
site! There are thousands of people swimming today that have no idea this sewage leak has happened.
