Cybertruck design is cray, but imo very strategic: 1. Existing stigma against Teslas as lame, esp from truck drivers 2. Use Roadster playbook where electric was also "lame", so they made bad ass sports car & beat ppl over the head to overcome stigma 3. Make fucking tank

Swinging the Pendulum is hard to use because it makes you look inconsistent and disorganized as a leader. But it's a realist operating principle that acknowledges the limits of communicating nuance in large company, and it IS consistent - just over the long run.

In the last 12 months, our little team grew from ~20 to 110 people 🙃 My big takeaway: the diff b/w great ppl and good ppl is exponential when you’re growing quickly. Great ppl scale themselves and still manage to do the work, good ppl can only do one. The difference compounds.

By far the biggest leadership learning for me in the last 6 months has been learning the value of staying silent. Still learning... Let teams feel ownership, solve their own problems, and organize the way they see fit. This has held true in 1:1s, meetings, and slack channels.

As an IC in my first year, this was frustrating at times and seemed to imply management dysfunction or misalignment But over a longer arc of time, seeing how it ultimately resulted in a balanced execution of the product and business made the value very clear

5. You need to show up emotionally composed, everyday. This is draining because once you pass 150 people, the odds are that any particular day will be a crisis for someone on your team. Yes, you should ideally be able to be vulnerable too, but real talk you mostly can't.

What we really wanted was the middle ground, eg. "use KPIs but don't blindly chase them", but we learned quickly this was too nuanced for a large culture to execute effectively It led to too many inconsistent individual decisions, making key outcomes impossible to execute

I wouldn't call you crazy for thinking this audio clip we shared on the earnings call today was scripted. What's even crazier is that it's real. Shopify's making a dent in the universe right now, and I couldn't be more in awe at the resiliency of merchants on our platform.
