Chicago Bird Collision Monitors (CBCM) is a volunteer conservation project dedicated to the protection of migratory birds through rescue, advocacy and outreach.
~50% of all birds migrating will pass through on only ~9 nights in the season. Tonight will be one of those MEGA migration nights. Please turn off lights to help the birds go along their merry way. Have paper bags ready to contain injured birds, and call us for help! 773-988-1867
While the death of Flaco is a tragedy, each year 1 billion birds die in North America from window collisions, including thousands in Chicago alone. Each of these birds, down to the drabbest little flycatcher, is worthy of mourning. Window collisions are preventable. We must act.
We are saddened to report that Flaco, the Eurasian eagle owl discovered missing from
@centralparkzoo
after his exhibit was vandalized just over a year ago, is dead after an apparent collision with a building on West 89th Street in Manhattan.
The floodgates are opening. The next 3 nights will see the biggest migration movement of the season so far in Chicago. Millions of birds will fly through Cook County, including warblers, who are frequent collision victims. Call us at 773-988-1867 if you find a bird in need.
6.5 million birds crossed Cook County last night. This morning, CBCM rescued & recovered nearly 300 birds, including this unfortunate vireo.
This tragedy is preventable. Chicago must take action now to change. It starts with all of us. It ends with the life of an innocent bird.
This morning as children waited to enter school in Chicago, birds fell dead at their feet. The culprit? Reflective glass windows. 15 dead birds were recovered from one school.
If you are interested in making your workplace bird-friendly, please call us: 773-988-1867.
Over 10 million birds crossed Cook County last night! Thanks to everyone who did their part by turning off lights and reporting injured birds to our hotline (773-988-1867).

Tragedy unfolding in Chicago: an unprecedented number of window collisions. Photos show nearly 1000 birds salvaged from a SINGLE building along the lakefront this morning, including mostly Tennessee, Palm, Myrtle, and Magnolia Warblers.
At what point does this become a crime?
Tonight will be another Top 9 fall migration night. Please share our number (773-988-1867) so injured birds can get the help they need quickly. Turn off your home's exterior and interior lights after 11pm. Let's hope the birds pass over Chicago instead of being ensnared by it!
Friday and Saturday nights will see large numbers of birds migrating through Chicago. Save our number, 773-988-1867, and report injured birds. Please take the time in the mornings to walk around your house or building and survey beneath your windows for birds who may need help.
Another thing you can do to protect birds is, if you happen to be the mayor of a large city on a major migratory flyway, say, a city like Chicago, you can work with your city council to make bird-friendly design mandatory for all new construction.
Draw shades and turn off all non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to sunrise to protect birds, especially during the peak migration seasons.
Other ways you can help:
🐦 Stock your bird feeders
🐦 Grow native plants
🐦 Full and fresh water sources
🐦 Leave your leaves for shelter!
Lights out, cats in, bird tape up. Tonight is going to be a HUGE night for migration across Illinois. 1) Lights attract and disorient birds➡️more collisions. 2) Cats like to hunt easy, stunned prey. 3) Making your windows bird friendly is the best thing you can do to help birds.
Journey ended.
Flying from Central America or the Caribbean, this beautiful Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, killed by a Chicago building, won't make it to his breeding grounds to raise young.

We are sorry to report the death of Poppa Owl, who so many of us delighted in watching this year as he raised his young at North Pond. CBCM rescued him after he was found weak and unresponsive in the shallows of the pond. We suspect he ingested poison from a rat or other prey...
Yesterday's event was dramatic, but remember it is not unusual for a building to kill 1,000 birds; all that is unusual is for it to happen at once. During migration we find up to 100 dead a birds a day. Pictured are 4 of 18 birds found in downtown Chicago on Wednesday.
While Field Museum folks picked up ~1,000 birds at McCormick Place yesterday, our volunteers picked up another ~1,000 birds in the rest of the downtown area. Please listen to this interview with our director, Annette Prince. It is not just one building.
Saving injured birds is important work, but collecting birds who have succumbed to their injuries is equally important. Tens of thousands of birds would have been swept up and thrown into dumpsters. Instead, CBCM salvaged them so they could be used for research like this.

Since city officials headed into the office at the start of this work week, we've found 80+ dead migratory birds. Here are just 2 of them: Song Sparrow and Belted Kingfisher. Both of these species breed in our area. Chicago should have welcomed them home. Instead, it killed them.

Not sure what this little screech owl’s crime was, but we busted him out of Palos Heights Police lockup Friday morning. Thanks to the PHPD for their help. They had him safely contained in a dark, quiet room until we could pick him up for transport to Willowbrook Wildlife Center.
Buckle in.

Tonight should be a big night for warbler migration. Warblers are common collision victims, and such tiny birbs need us big folk to look out for them. Please watch where you step tomorrow morning, move any stunned birds to safety, and call our hotline (773-988-1867) for help!
The first woodcock has landed! This handsome early bird was found downtown Tuesday. And we've noticed another sign of spring: Red-winged Blackbirds are arriving.
Migration season is here. Want to help? Join a CBCM team by attending an upcoming training session.
Last week CBCM volunteers rescued over 125 birds downtown, including this Sora.
Soras are losing their marshland habitat due to urban and agricultural development. By treating windows and turning off lights, we can ensure they make it safely to what homes they do have left.
Tonight will be a big migration night. More birds = more window collisions.
An easy thing you can do to help birds is share our hotline number (773-988-1867) with others in the Chicago area. The sooner we know about an injured bird, the better chance they have for survival!
Last night was an unusual night. The forecast was for moderate migration, yet the overnight storms brought down MANY birds. Our teams have been finding an inordinate amount of dead and injured birds. Please take the time to check around the buildings where you live and work.
And they keep on coming! Over the last 3 nights, 19.6 million birds passed through Cook County (per
