Yesterday I posted that a dear friend of mine had died unexpectedly.
Today I have been besieged by trolls telling me it was all her own fault.
It would be so good to have just a day or two of peace so that I could grieve.
Flight attendant: Welcome aboard, Dr Russell. Are you a medical doctor?
Me: No. Iโm Doctor of Philosophy. As in actual Philosophy. I can help in any cases of existential angst.
Flight attendant: (...)
There's some loud opining in the
@nzherald
today about the "complete failure" of our MIQ system.
I find it very hard to regard a system that has resulted in no community transmission since 28 February as a "complete failure". It sounds like a resounding success to me.
My lovely brother Paul died last night. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2015, so this has been a long journey. We are all very sad for him, and for his darling wife and three beautiful children. Iโm heading over to Queensland for a few days to be with them.
I got an email from SUFW today, and two more form emails from constituents. One of the emails was full of transphobia.
Iโm very clear on this: trans women are women, trans men are men, and I support the BDMRR bill.
โPeople on the average wage shouldnโt be paying almost 33% in the dollar" - Bridges.
Well that's all good then, because they're NOT! The average wage is about $53k a year. A person earning $53k a year pays $8,920 income tax, an average rate of 17%.

We got a notice to evacuate about 45 minutes ago. Thereโs a big slip down our road and houses 200m either side have to be vacated. Weโre on our way to stay with friends in Onehunga (rather than taking up evacuation centre spaces). Thinking of everyone doing their best tonight.
Wow. 116,615 New Zealanders have been vaccinated so far today. That's 2.2% of the whole population, or 1 in every 50 Kiwis turning out for a dose today.
#SuperSaturday
#Vaxathon
About those vaccine exemptions: the only valid exemptions are issued by the Ministry of Health. And once it's issued, it generates a vaccine pass that's absolutely identical to the standard vaccine pass that double vaxxed people have. 1/3
โI do wish to go gentle into that good night. Raging against the dying of the light is a pointless exercise... Death is no more than the space we make for others to live.โ

in the General Debate today.
Up until now Iโve been very careful not to block people on Twitter. But from now on, if you abuse me on a non-political tweet from an anonymous accountโฆ well, thatโs it. Blocked.
If there is a political issue you want to raise with me, then email me. With your real name.
The government is rushing a bill through with no select committee. We should have a very substantial debate in the house to give at least some scrutiny.
The government shut discussion down on the main part of the bill after just an hour.
So much for โstrengthening democracyโ.
Could I have a hug, please?
(Those of you who know me well will know that I am not a touchy person, so this is actually an extraordinary request for extraordinary times.)
QT: The Leader of the Opposition always starts out smirking as he asks his questions, but a few minutes in and he gets angrier and angrier as the PM wipes the floor with him.
We need to do better. A senior supermarket person just told me about some of the abuse that has been handed out to supermarket staff. Things like aggressive shoppers refusing to wear masks and then saying "It's no wonder you guys get stabbed."
This is horrid. 1/3
Actually, if you're looking for information on what governments spends, it's easily found on p. 6 of IRD's annual report. They report on it every year. You can find the annual reports here:
LEVEL ONE!!!
This is huge. Yes, we need to keep on with hygiene and tracing and staying home when we're sick, but as of midnight tonight, we're in LEVEL ONE!
Thank you to everyone in our team of 5 million who took up the responsibility and worked so hard to keep us all safe.
From the moment she became leader, โฆ
@jacindaardern
โฉ has been extraordinary. She led our party and then our country with compassion, courage, and strength. She has given her all for us.
Thank you, Jacinda, for you leadership. It has been an honour to be part of your team.
I've seen reports of people buying firearms and ammunition, to protect their families.
You know what the very best way to protect your family is?
WASH YOUR HANDS! STAY AT HOME! WASH YOUR HANDS SOME MORE!
This is the best and most heroic thing you can do right now.
If you want to get vaccinated but you've got accessibility barriers in the way, then call 0800 28 29 26 to get help with transport (free) or arrange an in-home visit (also free).
(This tweet inspired by several comments on the poll I ran yesterday.)
Patsy after patsy from the Leader of the Opposition in Question Time today, giving the PM so many opportunities to talk about the achievements of her government. He just doesn't seem to understand what he's doing.
Ah... no. School is not a child-minding service. How about instead of making children fit into work lives, we get employers to reconsider how they might structure employment.
Today I feel very relieved that we reformed our abortion legislation in the 52nd Parliament. Thank you
@AndrewLittleMP
,
@ruthdysonchc
and Amy Adams for making it happen.
Efeso had a big kind generous heart. He had so much to give and he gave it freely.
My heart is breaking for him, and for his wife and his little girls. He loved them so very dearly.
I'm proud to be voting for the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Bill. I would have anyway, but the need for it was made very clear by a young woman who said to me, "I just want to know that I'm not going to be fritzed for being gay."

Some deeply sad news for all the friends and admirers of Dr Cat Pausรฉ
@FOMNZ
. I know very few details except that our darling friend died in her sleep last night. I am so very sad, and I know that many in academic and union circles will be shocked and saddened too.
For the record, not only is our economy growing, we're doing well in comparison with others. It gives us a solid base for helping New Zealanders with the cost of living.
Thank you,
@grantrobertson1
. You've done a fantastic job. Yet another reason to vote

Dropped into Avondale Library with Councillor

to assure staff there of our support for them, and to thank them for all that they do to support diversity and inclusion and aroha in our community.
"In regards to comments made by the National Party about an inadequate response by the Government and the health system, Ardern said they were not taking advice from the Opposition but by experts worldwide."
RNZ: So how should the government respond to Covid-19?
Bridges: TAX CUTS!
Wrong again, Simon. Everyone knows that the correct answer is MORE ROADS!

Thank you everyone for all your support. I feel both a bit overwhelmed by the result, and excited about getting on with the work for the next three years.
And how good is it to have
@dimsie
in my electorate?!!!
This morning we're getting bombarded with emails demanding full-on quarantine and lockdowns right now.
I get that people are worried and stressed. But the decisions need to be led by our public health experts, not by reckons and worries. "Clinicians, not politicians."
2022 has been a stinker. My mother died and my brother died. I am so grateful for the support of my beloved through such difficulties. And for my darling daughters who bring so much joy.
A new year tomorrow. May it bring blessings for all of us.
I am on the whole, a fan of Dr Ashley Bloomfield, but my faith in him is a little shaken every time he says, โlearningsโ.

For those of you who were concerned that I was making green masks, today I am making red masks. And frankly, if I had old blue sheets, I'd be making blue masks. Because all colours are good colours.
New at WINZ:
1. Plain clothes security guards to welcome people.
2. Posters for new MSD commitments in all offices.
3. Water coolers, toilets, eligibility guides available.
4. Second approvals required for benefit suspensions.
Great work,

Businesses can check people with exemptions in just like any other customer. They won't even know that a person has an exemption because a person with a valid exemption will have a vaccine pass like everyone else.
Happy scanning, everyone! 3/3
Drove my marked up car to the start of my morning walk today. Lovely walk, but then as I left afterwards a bloke (completely unknown to me) spotted my markup and shouted and made rude gestures at me.
I waved and blew him a kiss in return.
Farewell to our brilliant and beloved Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. And to our equally brilliant and beloved Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, in his role as DPM. Thankfully he will still be our Minister of Finance. And Sport!
The opposition were hurling the word "socialist" across the debating chamber tonight, as if it were an insult. So what's a woman to do except proudly claim the title.
Nicky Wagnerโs opening words of her valedictory were interrupted from the gallery.
โNanna. Nanna. Hello Nanna!โ from an excited little one.
A lovely moment.
My darling daughter Bridgid graduated yesterday with a BA in Classics and Public Policy. Sheโs back at university this year doing Honours in Classics.
I am outrageously proud of her.
The problem with fines is that well off people just pay but poor people are driven further into poverty, and it doesnโt actually solve the underlying problem.
Yet more unimaginative sound bite policy from the hard hearted Act party.
Today a colleague of mine and I posted virtually identical tweets. We have similar followings. I got a whole lot of, well, shall we say... strongly worded feedback. He got nothing.
Chris Hipkins has re-organised everything because heโs isolating while heโs got Covid, but Christopher Luxon wonโt shift a single event.
Luxon knows Chippy thrashed him in the last debate. I think heโs just using this as a handy excuse to chicken out.
Out to lunch with Ms 18 the Younger, to celebrate her scholarship results. She was awarded a Scholarship in Classics, and an Outstanding Scholarship in History (one of the top 21 students in the country). I am so pleased for her.
When the PM said that we could sum up what Level 3 meant for Auckland with one word, I thought she was going to say, "Takeaways!"
She's right. It absolutely has to be "Caution." We have to be so careful for the next couple of weeks.
