Comics editor. Tiger, Roy of the Rovers and all that. Writer of Scorer for 22 years. Author of 'Real Roy of the Rovers Stuff' & 'Comic Book Hero'. On sale now!
It's 1976, the year I launched Roy of the Rovers as a separate title. Roy has a chat with his best mate, Blackie Gray, as Melchester trot out in the playing strip I designed. It doesn't seem like 44 years ago...
Greetings to all my followers and welcome to the folk who have recently followed me. I hope you like my visits to the world of the comics I produced. Lots of goodies still to show and talk about! Tiger, Roy and all the others!
I am so, so sorry to hear of the passing of Trevor Francis. He wrote for Tiger for many years and he was a lovely man to work with. Here's Trevor and his wife Helen during their flight to America, where Trevor was to play for Detroit Express. The two of them now reunited.
A Merry Christmas to my friends and followers (same thing). Hoping you have lots of everything you like best and 2024 is a happy, healthy year. Thanks for your kind messages over the past year. They mean a lot. They make this old editor very happy and make me feel still involved!
48 years ago, Tiger was celebrating the 21st birthday of Trevor Francis. I got the cake made and presented it to him in Birmingham. We lost someone special today. RIP Trevor.
Roy gets the players ready for 90 minutes of vital football. A good look at a classic Melchester strip. I'm pleased with the design I created all those years ago! 😃
It's always good to show this again. The lads of Melchester in the strip I designed. All the players identified under the group. No shirt advertising at this stage!
Digging around in my souvenir file, I came across my very rough rough for my new 1976 football title. This is my first suggestion that it be called Roy of the Rovers. It's crude and nothing like we finished up but it was a start!
I've had a request to show Roy's England team. Here's the cover which features the team, including the late Trevor Francis, Malcolm Macdonald and characters from the stories in Tiger and Roy of the Rovers.
So many memories of Trevor Francis, who died today. This is me with Trevor and Helen in their apartment in Detroit, along with some copies of Roy of the Rovers.
They made us very welcome. RIP
Another chance to see the Melchester Rovers team group from 1976. This was a strong line-up I created with author Tom Tully and artist David Sque. Nice strip!
Thank you for your kind reaction to the sad loss of Trevor Francis. Here's a photo that should be seen again. Trevor against Geoffrey Boycott at Subbuteo, with Dickie Bird as referee. Taken at Tiger's 25th birthday party. Top right: Derek Birnage, the first editor of Tiger.
Following an earthquake at Mel Park, I arranged for Melchester Rovers to play all their home games at Wembley Stadium. Here they are getting a great welcome! Michael White artwork.
Continuing the memories of Trevor Francis, who sadly died today: Here's Trevor with Tiger's 25th anniversary birthday cake, along with Ernie Wise, Geoffrey Boycott and Dickie Bird.
A Very Happy New Year to all my friends on 'X'. I hope you have an awesome 2024. Thank you for following.
What better way to send greetings than with a Roy of the Rovers New Year cover!
Greetings to new and established followers. I appreciate your interest and our little chats. I’m of an age when lots of my friends have passed on. It’s so good to make new friends and talk about the comics we produced and to talk to former readers. Thanks!
As it's raining in the Test, here's a chance to show how we promoted a Test Match game competition in Tiger. The great Fred Trueman concentrating on the action.
Thanks for your tremendous reaction to this cover I posted yesterday. It was awesome to read all your kind comments. Greetings to my new followers and hello again to old friends. Enjoy our trips into the world of Roy, Tiger and other comics!
Forty-four years ago this month, Roy married Penny. A guard of honour from the Melchester players. Of course, Blackie Gray was Best Man. I was delighted to organise this happy day for Roy and Penny.
In 10 days it will be the 40th anniversary of the first issue of Scream. In the coming days, I'll be talking more about this, my most difficult launch. Just remember to keep the light on! (Not for the nervous!). 😬
1977 and it's The Safest Hands in Soccer making the front cover of Roy of the Rovers. I thought it was time to give readers a triple helping of Gordon Stewart!
A rare green, red and yellow Tiger logo we produced in 1984. Superb artwork by John Gillatt, showing Billy Dane scoring for Groundwood. All that and eight other stories to entertain you!
A rare Mike's Mini Men cover, featuring Mike and three of his Melchester mini men! It's one of the new stories I created when we gave Roy his own title.
Just after Gordon Banks became Tiger Sports Star of the Year, I asked him if he'd appear in a Roy of the Rover story. He agreed and this is the result. Roy was playing for an all-star team against Melchester...and Gordon had to face a penalty! Great art by Yvonne Hutton.
It's September 1981 and Melchester Rovers show off their new Gola kit. It was a good sponsorship until we were forced to remove the name on the shirt fronts because it was "unfair advertising for children". Anway, in this issue I'd obtained some strips for a competition!
Welcome to my new followers and greetings to old friends. Wembley final today and here's a Roy cover we did, reminding you that at one time Rovers played their home matches at Wembley, following an earthquake at Mel Park. Cover art by Mike White.
A very happy and healthy New Year to everyone. Hoping you have lots of everything you like best! Here's how we celebrated the New Year in Roy of the Rovers in 1983.
Is this one of the most famous introductions in the world of comics? "Billy Dane owned an ancient pair of football boots that used to belong to old-time soccer star "Dead-Shot" Keen. In some strange way, the boots seemed to enable Billy to play in Dead-Shot's style..."
Going on holiday? What better than taking a copy of the Roy of the Rovers Holiday Special! Here's Roy on the cover plus a few words about what was inside. David Sque artwork.
Thanks for all your kind words about Eagle. It's great for me that so many folk still remember what we did. Here's issue two, where I made the front cover, bottom right of the page! The free Eagle badge is missing!
A page of Billy's Boots in Tiger. Billy is off to Holland and he's shocked at the number of bicycles. John Gillatt art and Fred Baker's script. Classic!
Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be posting a few of our festive covers. Some stuff I've posted before and some other pics. I have to start with the traditional Morecambe and Wise Christmas covers. Exclusive photos for Tiger and Roy.
Roy in England strip again, making the cover of our Holiday Special. Top artwork from David Sque. It was a bargain for just 65p! And Pat Jennings was the Sign Please star!
With England playing tonight, it's a good opportunity to show Roy's famous England side he selected, featuring players from Roy of the Rovers and Tiger, plus Trevor Francis and Malcolm Macdonald. What do you think of these England shirts?
Let's forget the winter cold and be warmed by this 1987 Tiger Annual cover we produced, featuring Billy Dane in cricketing action. Art by John Gillatt.
Billy's Boots was one of our most popular stories in Tiger but that didn't mean Billy Dane didn't have a tough time, even when he was wearing Dead-Shot's old boots. Fred Baker script, John Gillatt artwork. Classic!
The late, great Peter Sellers was born on this day. This is me (with a lot of hair) taking a look at the latest Tiger with Peter when I visited him at his London home, in 1973. It was a great day for me, as I'm a massive fan of his work.
Always worth looking at again! Billy Dane introduces an exclusive Tiger Subbuteo competition. Win a cricket, football or rugby set. We had all the best competitions in Tiger!
Bryan Tomlinson died yesterday. No relation, he was my best mate. We went to Test matches together, lads days to the seaside and we'd lunch every monday. He ran mini marathons for Roy of the Rovers. Condolences to his family. A very special, lovely man. Rest in peace.
Let's have another Roy of the Rovers Annual. This time it's what we produced for 1987. Fine artwork by David Sque. Roy looks happy about what's happening! Melchester magic!
On the left is the Roy badge we gave away as a free gift, when we launched the Melchester Gola kit. On the right is a page advert featuring that new strip. Awesome!
There was great interest in the Melchester team group I recently reTweeted. Here's another team picture and it's Billy Dane, Billy's boots and the lads from Groundwood School. A top Tiger Annual cover from John Gillatt.
Roy and the lads having fun playing this Cup Football Game. Anyone remember playing the game or winning it in our competition? There was also a chance to meet Trevor Francis. All the top prizes in Roy of the Rovers!
In 1982 'Game For a Laugh' was a top TV show. I invited the stars to visit the Eagle offices for our Christmas issue. They caused chaos when they arrived at the IPC reception. But they were great to work with and we got a memorable cover. Sorry about lack of snow on the logo!
Captured for one of our Roy of the Rovers front pages:
Steve Norman and Martin Kemp sign for Melchester Rovers. Thanks for all your interest about the signing!
Talking about Gordon Banks saving a penalty, here he is about to save a penalty from the great Ferenc Puskás, in special event at Highbury. That's me just to the top left of the goalpost.
I've been posting a series of
@realmartinkemp
and
@SteveNormanReal
Roy of the Rovers covers. Here's the time Spandau Ballet gave a front cover performance for Roy at Mel Park. I managed to make sure there was a football in the picture!
@SpandauBallet
Today would have been the 70th birthday of Trevor Francis. Here's the Tiger spread when we celebrated Trevor's 21st birthday. He wrote for Tiger for a long time and was a good friend.
Always one of our most popular annual covers: Billy Dane and friends celebrating a cup final victory. Dead Shot's old boots getting hidden by the excited group. Art by John Gillatt.
Viktor Boskovic has been jumping up and down in fury, so annoyed he didn't appear on the Hard Man cover I posted yesterday. He's insisted I post this new one, with Viktor at the centre of things. He should be happy now!
(And there's a Subbuteo competition inside!).
The cricket season is here! Take a look at bowler Billy Dane who we featured on this Tiger cover. Dead-Shot's old boots are making him bowl really fast!
Amazingly, it's just over 49 years ago that we celebrated Tiger's 20th birthday. I had Johnny Cougar, Skid Solo and Roy Race appearing on the cover, along with the celebration cake. Our 20 Years of Sport booklet started at the same time. And all for 4p!
One of our most popular stories in Roy of the Rovers was 'The Safest Hands in Soccer'. Here's Gordon Stewart in action and also a pic of Fred, Gordon's lucky mascot. Script by Gil Page and art by Osvaldo Torta.
So sad to hear of the passing of the great Bobby Charlton. It was my honour to meet him on a few occasions. A lovely man who was associated with Tiger in the early days. A great loss to football. Rest in Peace.
I always enjoy looking at this photo. The great Peter Sellers taking time to read a copy of Tiger. He was growing a beard ready for a new film role. I’ve no excuse for not getting my hair cut.
Not quite 65 years ago but it's the cover of issue one of Roy of the Rovers. September 1976. I took a day off work to design the free chart. I think the cover could have been better but it did say it all: 8 stories, free chart, and an article by HRH. What more could you want?
Copies of Tiger that have just been printed! I'm taking a look at the issues with the great Gordon Banks, whose articles were making regular appearances in Tiger.
Thank you so much for your kind birthday messages. They mean a lot. It’s wonderful that our work is so fondly remembered. I wish I could make you all Readers of the Week! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🍾
Roy of the Rovers writer Tom Tully and myself would meet up a few times a year to plan what Roy would be doing, on and off the pitch, during the following few months. Photo taken in my office on the 23rd floor of King's Reach Tower.
Very sad to hear of the passing of Paul Mariner. A great striker. Here's Paul with Roy Race, after Paul received the Roy of the Rovers Centre-Forward of the Year trophy. RIP
