I was called to the bar (qualified as a barrister) in 1990, thirty years ago, and half way through my life to date. I've revised something I wrote in 2017 to reflect on reaching thirty years' call - as much about time and place and other lives as mine

I am a British Jew. My mother was a Holocaust survivor who left Prague as a teenager, and my father’s grandfather left Russia to escape the pogroms of Tsar Alexander III. I’ve lived in London since infancy. I’ve never felt the proximity of ancient hatred here so strongly as today

I have my views about litigation crowdfunding but the animus against J K Rowling for her £70,000 donation to a case which has permission to go to the UK Supreme Court is something to behold. She has a self-made fortune, is extensively philanthropic and can choose how to spend it

What to look for in the judgment in Mermaids v Charity Commission and LGBA, to be published at 10am tomorrow - Does Mermaids have standing to appeal CC’s decision? Y/N - If Y, is Mermaids’ argument that LGBA’s purposes do not pass the public benefit test to be a charity right?

Former CEO of Mermaids is wrong. They failed on standing because Mermaids could not meet the legal test on the facts, not because the law is “so complex”. The judges gave no reasons at all for their lack of agreement on LGBA’s charitable status. LGBA remains a registered charity

If you have been following Mermaids v (1) Charity Commission (2) LGBA as an observer or via live tweets this week, please don’t write to the presiding judge (female) with your views on any of the evidence. That isn’t how civil justice works. Amazing that anyone should think it is

The UK Supreme Court has now refused permission to the GLP to appeal this decision because the application “does not raise an arguable point of law”

Judgment of the Court of Appeal dismissing the Good Law Project’s appeal on preservation of records of ministerial communications, a case supported by £180,000 crowdfunding. Note the sharp judicial criticism of the way the claim was put, at paragraph 71

Keeping in mind that the legal test of standing required Mermaids to argue that it was “affected” by the decision to register LGBA as a charity, and its evidence that LGBA was affecting Mermaids by impeding its work, I find this assertion by Mermaids a little surprising

Deeply unimpressive that Lord Falconer repeatedly referred to “safe spaces” (not statute language) not “single sex spaces” when giving evidence to WESC on GRR(Scotland) Bill and Equality Act, a subject on which precision and clarity of language is crucial

And the truth turned out to be that Kate Bingham did offer her time and talents in service of the public good, and the cv that was published with the announcement of her appointment made it clear what experience and skills - all omitted from the sneer here - she had for that role

Izzard feels he was “given the genetics of both” men and women. Drivel. Being a man is integral to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, who could not otherwise have vied for succession to his father as King of Denmark, and who is obsessed with the female sexuality of both his mother and Ophelia

@crimlawuk You clearly haven’t paid attention to eg the fact that in your and my profession, a set of barristers’ chambers which regards itself as progressive was recently ordered to pay aggravated damages to one of its members for discriminating against her on the basis of her beliefs

The more I read, the more I dissent from this description of this case. She was 44, knew she was pregnant in the autumn of 2019, and took no steps to seek a termination when she could have lawfully done so, months before lockdown. Then lied, to kill a child in advanced gestation

The order of the Divisional Court in Bell v Tavistock has been put into the public domain. It includes detailed reasons for the court’s refusal of permission to appeal. These may dispel some of the misinterpretations of the judgment which have appeared in some commentary on it

Before muting the words “Gary Lineker” forever, here is simply the worst comment on him and the BBC, in a field of very stiff competition. No one cares what many Jews think about their own tragic history, but if you are looking for an echo of 1930s Germany, it’s here

The only reason why Gary Lineker got suspended is because the BBC is scared of the reaction of Zionists and their allies. He was allowed to cuss a Muslim country non stop without repercussions during the World Cup in Qatar.

How many of her critics contributed towards the £83,692 litigation crowdfunding for Mermaids to sue the Charity Commission and LGBA? A case that was unsuccessful and against which there has been no attempt to appeal. People can choose how to spend - or waste - their own money

This is simply nonsense, and disappointing from someone who has a large public platform. Trusts serve many purposes: joint ownership of land, managing funds for children, or for people who have received personal injuries damages awards, holding charity assets and pension funds

If one thing is clear from the Kuenssberg Mone Barrowman interview is that trusts should simply be banned as their only purpose is to hide money from the public, the press, and the authorities and enable the owners of it to deny ownership.

Everyone who comes to Twitter for public engagement with specialist knowledge of a subject knows how rewarding positive engagement can be. But there’s also this. Not “somewhat robust” as its author says, but aggressive, abrasive, slap in the face and totally unwarranted rudeness

A woman barristers can pursue a career she began in 1989 (when women barristers were rarer and faced more prejudice), and can be outstandingly successful in her career, but a progressive man in public life will still disparage her as “relatively competent”
