Over the last three years I’ve worked closed with Jammeh’s victims.I have cried with them, held their hands and felt their pain. To read that Barrow is shaking hands and signing MOUs with
#APRC
is a big betrayal to victims and Gambians as a whole.
I am pleased to announce that I have been
#Awarded
an
#MBE
for my work on campaigning against female genital mutilation (FGM) and for supporting migrant women in
#Scotland
. I dedicate this award to all the women fighting against gender-based violence around the world
@UKinGambia
After years of suffering recurrent
#miscarriages
, in 2014 I gave up on motherhood. I worked hard and sent my mum to
#Hajj
. Mum said she prayed for Allah to give me a child especially on
#DayofArafah
Within a year I had Muhammad who now has 3 brothers.
Allah is the greatest

As Gambian men continue to gamble with women bodies and use their bodies as a pawn for political gain, women continue to be resilient, steadfast and focus.
We will fight to the end to ensure that girls live free from
#FGM
Congratulations to
@BarrowPresident
for hosting
@oicgambia
.The OIC has taken a strong stance against
#FGM
which they highlighted
#FGMZTD2024
.
As Barrow will be the Chair of The OIC over the next few years it is vital that
#FGM
remains criminalised under his presidency in 🇬🇲
I am pleased to share that the
@GenevaSummit
has honoured me with the 2024 Women’ Rights Award.
I am honoured to be the recipient of this year’s award & I am truly appreciative of the many Geneva based Human Rights NGOs who recognised my efforts and work on women’s rights.
BREAKING: The
#GenevaSummit2024
Women's Rights Award will go to women's rights hero and FGM survivor
@BaldehF
for her relentless fight to end female genital mutilation and gender-based violence in The
#Gambia
.
Register to join us on May 15th ➡️
@fadyhocheimy
This use to be my view too however I now appreciate that even in instances were staff want to come in unless they have their own vehicles it is difficult as drivers of commercial vehicles are also not on the road. Let’s address our poor infrastructure
If these men succeed in decriminalising
#FGM
, be assured that they will move to decriminalise
#childmarriage
which is their ultimate goal.
Bunch of paedophiles. You think we don’t see you??
I am at
#Westfieldclinic
and whilst we are waiting to see a Dr. The staff are showing us hand washing techniques. Well done to Dr. Palmer and her dedicated staff
Firstly let’s not be fooled by any politician who joins
#Jammeh
/APRC In the name of
#Reconciliation
. They are only doing it for their selfish reasons; to win votes.
Secondly by giving
#Jammeh
relevance they continue to disregard the feelings of Jammeh’s victims
Sadly if Imam Fatty goes ahead with his threat to mobilise communities and organise for their girls to be cut; We know he will target remote, disadvantaged and poor rural areas who are vulnerable. So at the end of the day it will be the poor and marginalised that will suffer.
Seeing & hearing men debate to what extend women & girls bodies should be mutilate is really sad. At the same time these men continue to trivialise our pains and suffering from
#FGM
.
To end
#FGM
we must end all discriminations against women & promote women in decision making
The
#lawyer
who
#raped
and impregnated a minor and forced her to abort and then raped her again and impregnated her 2 years later has been charged today. Bail is set at 200,000 dalasis. Keenly following this case.
#Gambia
What we are currently seeing is the brewing of extremism in
#Gambia
. Attacking women and their bodies is an entry point as they are the weakest and most vulnerable.
@Presidency_GMB
advises need to recognise that
#EndFGM
I love how
#Penda
carried her award home to celebrate with her community. This has made me so happy. Thank you
@SheAwardsGambia
for celebrating Gambian women and their contributions.
My father worked hard to ensure that his children especially daughters were educated. And today as a family and society we are ripping those benefits. I can never emphases enough the vital role of
#fathers
in promoting girls rights.
I present you my sister Dr. kumba Baldeh
BGH welcomes with open arms its first female Gambian doctor, Dr Kumba Baldeh
A moment of joy & pride in female excellence. She has set the ball rolling and we hope she inspires many others to accept the call to serve country beyond the Greater Banjul Area.
#CenterOfExcellence
Thank you
@SheAwardsGambia
for the recognition. This award is very dear to me; because it comes from Gambian women and Very special because it is the
@SiseSawaneh
Award. I am very humbled and touched.
Winner of The Sise Sawaneh Award/ Outstanding Woman of the Year: Fatou Baldeh
Fatou Baldeh has been an active advocate against sexual and gender-based violence with a particular focus on FGM, sexual abuse and the provision of psycho-social support to survivors of SGBV.
#IWD2020
For many years, men interpreted religious scrips to women. This interpretation was often in favour of men. Our generation of women can read and critically analyse.
And we know that Islam promotes peace & the principle of do no harm.
#FGM
harms women so it can’t be Islamic.
As part of my high level engagements, I met Amb. Pratima Narayan Senior Advisor to the US Ambassador at Large for Global Criminal Justice.
We spoke about the current post-TRRC process in
#Gambia
and how
#StateDepartment
can support
#CSOs
efforts
@Gambia_MOJ
The day that an innocent little girl is manhandled and pinned down to the floor and the most intimate part of her body is exposed & cut off; that’s the day that society tells her that HER BODY as a girl & in the future as a women deserves pain, brutality & violence.
#EndFGMNow
The victim of Gorgi Mboob, Ebrima, reported that whilst in a cell, he overheard police officials telling a young girl reporting being raped that she probably enjoyed it.
For those of you who always ask why victims do not report rape to the police. Here is your answer
Dear
@mariesock2021
I love that you didn’t let anyone dictate your appearances because you are a woman aspiring to be a president. Thank you for setting the standards. Wishing you best of luck.
#womeninleadership
Womeninpolitics
Women constitute over half of the Gambian population. We are the majority voters and campaigners for different politicians and the fabric that hold our communities together
Moving forward women’s rights are going to have to be on top of the agenda and priorities of politicians.
It’s the
#DayoftheGirl
& I remind The Gambia Government of their commitment to protect girls from
#FGM
as committed to national, regional & international legal frameworks.
We can’t continue politicising girls’ bodies & hiding behind culture & religion to violate their rights
Good morning
#Gambia
Human Rights Defenders. Let’s continue to speak our truth and advocate for the safety of girls.
If you are at The NA, remain calm and ignore all provokes.
Most importantly look after your yourself and your mental health!
It’s going to be a long day!
Two years ago today, I was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) by her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain.
@UKinGambia
. Always grateful and proud of this recognition and honour.
Reviewing my son’s school work. One of the question asked is;
Who is the head of the household?
My son answered
#Mother
. It was marked wrong.
In our household his mother is the head. Why are these stereotypical questions asked at schools? They maintain patriarchy and sexism.
Presently with women from
#Iran
,
#Afghanistan
and
#Morroco
. They’re all in hijabs.
Two of them have not heard about
#FGM
before & all three have not been cut & no one within their communities have been cut.
#GambianMen
how can you tell me
#FGM
is an obligation in
#Islam
?
#DoubleCelebration
my babies turn 5 and 3 today.
#HappyBirthday
Muhammad and Zakariya. I pray that Allah give you a life filled with joy, laughter, good health and happiness 💓💓
Tomorrow a precedent will be set on the future of women and girls in
#Gambia
& the global efforts to
#EndFGM
as
#MPs
decide on the proposed amendment of the
#WomensAct
to allow the practice of
#FGM
in the Gambia.
We urge MPs to vote against the repeal and safeguard girls.
We have been saying this; these old men are after the child marriage law as they all want to marry little girls. If we allow these old men to control our society then we are doomed.
#FGMLegislationMustStay
Last October, a woman whose
#4Yearold
daughter was cut without her consent reported the case to the police. I accompanied her when she was asked to report, however when we got there, the police kicked us out saying they had orders from the top to not take
#FGMCases
!
Bintou Nyabally testified at the
#TRRC
and bravely spoke about being raped by two security officers. But you lot are just focusing on the part she mentioned about
#Barrow
hiding under a table. What does this say about our
#Gambian
society?
@TRRC_Gambia
We are attending the practitioners’ conference on Transitional Justice in
#Berlin
.
Our founder
@BaldehF
is presenting on feminist approaches to
#TJ
, using our
#GenderJustice
approach in
#Gambia
as an example.
As we await the outcomes of the
#FGMBill
, we are witness a systematic oppression of women and girls.
Security personnel favouring those promoting
#FGM
to come inside the NA whilst survivors & many
#CSO
representatives are being denied entry.
Patriarchy is the real devil
Whilst I appreciate that this is a challenge due to a closely knitted society, I do hope that moving forward our systems especially the judiciary will ensure that the identity of victims of RAPE and other sexual related crimes especially MINORS are kept confidential
#FGM
happens to children & babies who are not in a position to give consent so it is never a choice!
Even if it was a “choice” Gambia is a patriarchal society where men control power & make decisions at all levels including the household & what happens to women & their bodies.
Gambians let’s concentrate on women’s abilities & not their appearances.
Comments have already started pouring on the appearances of female candidates contesting for local government.
You will not see such comments about male candidates even if they look like frogs.
Happy birthday to my gorgeous boys Muhammad (7 years today) and Zakariya (5 years today).
May Allah give you good Iman, good health, happiness and guide you through the right path. I love you both from the sun to the moon and back. ♥️
#FGM
is rooted in gender inequality & power imbalances. We continue to see how those in control of this power (men) continue to take over spaces & how hard they keep trying to silence the women.
We will remain loud and we will continue to advocacy to break this power imbalance
#FGM
is harmful to women’s physical & emotional health with long term consequences & negative reproductive health outcomes.
We cannot continue to tolerate the use of culture & tradition as an excuse to violate women and girls’ bodies.
#NoRepealofFGMLaw
#Gambia
@NHRCGambia
Our main hospital has become the epicentre of
#Covid
transmission. Fear of getting infected in hospitals will deter women from accessing services + antenatal care. We r already struggling to control
#maternaldeaths
, and this could have a serious impact on the little gains made.
Gambia
#MediaHouses
, please be sensitive when reporting on sensitive matters such as
#Murder
No trigger warnings, no thoughts on how love ones will feel when they see these victims.
Be sensitive!!
It couldn’t be clearer!
This is not about Islam.
This is about power.
We therefore urge
#MPs
to not touch The
#WomensAct
and instead demand for the full enforcement of
#FGMLegislations
.
@NHRCGambia
First we drove to my birthplace and constituency in Foni where I voted and then we went Papa’s in Banjul where he voted too.
We used the long journey to engage the boys in civic education

#Gambia
I just received a call from an unknown caller threatening me. The caller was a lady and said she was going to destroy me and my image because of a tweet I put up here yesterday.
Please bring it on. I will not be intimidated by any person.
Also how do I track the caller?
What we saw today was a manifestation of gender inequality at all levels.
Four Men have debated among themselves with 3 fully in support of repealing
#FGMLegislations
.
To
#Endfgm
we must end all discriminations against women.
Importantly we must have more women MPs
I salute Imam Baba Leigh. He was one of few imams that openly condemned
#Jammeh
for his violations. Publicly denounced the practice of
#FGM
& other forms of
#GBV
. He has always been consistent. We need more like him
We are in Brikama Magistrate Court for the 14year old girl who is raped and pregnant. And the judge has just threatened us with imprisonment and or a fine of 50,000dalasi if we write about this
One of the most amazing people I know. So many victims I met have spoken about how
@FatouJagneS
helped them and kept them safe during struggle. The contributions of women to end dictatorship in
#Gambia
is not acknowledged enough. We appreciate you
#SisterFatou
#TRRCGambia
#Melville
has used his powers as man,connections, status and all other means possible to intimidate his
#victims
. But these are strong women who you no longer intimidate and we are here to support them to bring you and men like you to justice.
#survingmelville
To those asking what impact we have made since the ban… I will proudly say that the culture of silence have been broken & survivors are speaking up & breaking the circle of violence.
#GambianWomen
have taken a lead in a wave to fight against
#FGM
&
#GenderInequality
A bill seeking to overturn a ban on FGM is progressing through The Gambian parliament.
Women's rights activist
@BaldehF
says the debate is not only "re-traumatising" survivors but has "affected the progress that's already been made" in communities
🎧
Men in position of power taking advantage of female staff & abusing them sexually is rampant in
#Gambia
Because of the power dynamics victims often cannot consent as they are coerced in these relationships.
But then try explain
#Consent
to most
#Gambian
men….
