There is a bit in TOS where Kirk looks straight at the camera and talks about how horrible war is why it should be avoided. And then he does it again five minutes later.

Them: #startrek used to be subtle and show both sides of a situation. Actual Star Trek in the 90s:

@BadSocialism There’s also a episode in TOS where the Enterprise is literally used to fire on people planetside that doesn’t miraculously incinerate them.

@BadSocialism They made a whole entire movie, during the height of endangered species discourse, where the crew travels through time to the present day to Save the Whales™. And half of the movie is Kirk and co shaking their head at the political & cultural foibles of "modern times".

@BadSocialism Yes. People act like Star Trek used to be more subtle with its politics, but they would regulary have the captain stop everything and give a passionate speech explaining the moral of the episode. Maybe we need more of that.

@BadSocialism There is literally a scene where Kirk gives a speech on why women's rights to birth control is important.

@BadSocialism Sisko: "I'm tired of being calm ..." DS9 Writers: "That's why we're going to kill your character's humanity and claim that you ascended to the Prophets, even though it wouldn't make sense for Jake to remain in that case ...."
