Them: #startrek used to be subtle and show both sides of a situation. Actual Star Trek in the 90s:

In 12 hours your ship will have an extremely dangerous first contact mission. Located in uncharted space. Which captain are you choosing and why? #StarTrek

@trekkiebill Why don’t you try watching Avery Brooks’ comments about the fact that his character was never intended to be a race-based character, but instead he was hired based on the quality of his acting

@trekkiebill Usually it wasn't both sides, but it usually got it's message across with out lecturing (I guess you can call that subtle). it gave people something to think about while setting an example, with minimal heavy handedness. I think it reached more people because of this approach.

@trekkiebill Sisko was always a hothead. Least favorite lead/captain. Good show, though.

@trekkiebill @N7hobbit Star Trek has NEVER been subtle. If it feels subtle in retrospect its because it was over your head at the time.

@trekkiebill Star Trek has been hitting people over the head since day one. A woman second in command of a starship in the mid 60’s was scandalous. It’s one of the reasons I love trek. People that think trek isn’t political haven’t actually watched the show and paid attention.

@trekkiebill I've had people back in Australia say to me, "You shouldn't be so angry all the time". My response is generally, "First, there's a lot to be angry about. Second, if MORE people got angry then maybe things would actually fucking change!"

@trekkiebill @scots_dragon I love this episode but also I kinda think its sad/funny that Levar Burton had to call up Sam Delaney and warn him that people were going to think the episode was about him (nope) basically because he was the only black sf guy alotta people knew

@trekkiebill The way this episode foreshadows Avery Brooks' treatment by the franchise...😬

@trekkiebill that's actually a good one for everything going on with the writers strike and these people that seem determined to bring on the Bel riots.
