What's really surprised me about this series is how everyone we reach out to wants to talk to us. It's been incredible the kinds of guests we've been able to book. There's a real hunger to talk about what really happened during the war.

During the Afghan War, we knew that the Taliban were our enemy. But who exactly were our friends and allies? In many cases, they were torturers, rapists and murderers themselves.

For the past little while, I've been working on a piece about Toronto's relationship to the alt-right, especially the "manosphere." Unfortunately that research has become relevant. I'm going to share as much as I can here for people who may not be familiar with these movements.

At the time Justin Trudeau was doing his racist pantomime, I was a brown kid with a turban just outside Vancouver facing fairly regular bullying. I can't imagine how demeaned I would have felt if one of my teachers had done that.

Incels & the broader manosphere are an important component of what we've come to think of as the alt-right (depending on your definition of that term). Misogyny is the most common gateway drug to other forms of hate.

An important point: if Minassian was an incel & the author of that Facebook post, his attack should probably be described as terrorism, although the lone wolf variety. Incels have an ideology & the goal is to terrorize women & "normies."

Self-described incels today are almost entirely men who are laser-focused on their inability to have sex & blame women. Of the manosphere communities, incels are the most virulently misogynistic.

"Incel" was a term actually coined by a queer Toronto woman in the 90s to give a name to how she was feeling at the time. It morphed into something horrific. "I can't uninvent this word, nor restrict it to the nicer people who need it."

"Incel" refers to "involuntary celibate," essentially meaning that a person can't get laid because of their looks/personality. The incels make up one segment of the broader "manosphere", a collection of online masculinist communities that interplay with one another.

Incels differ in important ways from Men's Rights Activists. While both movements are misogynistic at their core, MRAs deploy a human rights framework to argue men are oppressed. Incels don't talk about rights, they just hate.

The path to radicalization for incels often starts with the Red Pill/Pick-Up Artist communities. They try to utilize the pseudo-scientific/dehumanizing seduction techniques, still can't get laid & become infuriated. That's the path Elliot Rodger went down.

To clarify, the manosphere is a catch-all term that refers to a number of online male communities that overlap, branch off, interface & oppose each other in complicated ways. It includes pick-up artists, men's rights activists, incels, men going their own way etc.

Soh is presenting a lot of strawmen. The other side believes that men and women have to be the same to be equal, which isn't a logic I've heard before.

Brown is now going through a litany of claims that people have brought to human rights commissions, including someone who claimed their gender was "the king." The claim was dismissed. But this is still somehow an indication the system is broken.

A joke question: When can I start self-identifying as a trans-racial indigenous person? I think the panel should read some of @adamgaudry 's work on the thousands of white Canadians who are self-indigenizing, claiming to be Metis

It's important to understand the differences between PUAs, MRAs, MGTOWs, incels etc. But don't miss the forest for the trees — they're united by a thoroughly misogynist framework & bleed into one another.

CityNews used UNDERCOVER CAMERAS in an "investigation" of panhandlers. They found no wrongdoing. And yet their Romani ethnicity is the centre of the story. This is appalling.

I’d like to offer up my podcasting services to the Toronto Police. I already have a proven track record of creating engaging, honest podcasts about the TPS. And if you go with me, I promise that no one could accuse you of funding “copaganda.”

How much taxpayer money is ⁦ @TorontoPolice ⁩ spending on a podcast? It took a freedom of information request & many months before the police would provide the answer: $337,000. ⁦ @CBCToronto ⁩ story by ⁦ @johnrieti ⁩ & ⁦ @Shawn_Jeffords

I'm not in the least surprised that a Canadian politician knows next-to-nothing about Canadian history. The people who run this country are wilfully ignorant about it's past.

NEW: In a recent Zoom call, Erin O’Toole shared tips with campus conservatives on how to win a debate with Liberals about residential schools. He suggested the architects of the schools only meant to ‘provide education’ to Indigenous children. #cdnpoli

I wrote about my family's experiences of the 1984 Delhi pogrom & how @theJagmeetSingh needs to embrace the pain of all communities who were affected by the trauma of the 1980s & 90s.

Jesse Brown of the popular Canadian (Ontario-centric) podcast @CANADALAND says Vancouver has no culture. But this masterful work of art sushi I’m about to devour says otherwise 🤤

Easily one of the most ignorant statements I’ve ever seen from media executive. I’m blown away by this level of ignorance.

One of the reasons I started @OverstoryMedia was because I felt most journalists weren’t very good at business, and they should focus on everything but that. Now my thoughts have changed. Many journalists don’t understand business. But worse? They don’t care to.

Whatever producer invited Terry Milewski to comment on this issue should feel terrible. Over the last few years, all he’s done is parrot talking points from the Indian security establishment. Unless you’re challenging his irresponsible & incorrect reporting, keep him off air.
