In 1993, the film The Joy Luck Club won no awards. Today the National Registry of Film announced that The Joy Luck Club is one of 25 chosen to be part of its permanent archive. Awards don’t have to come in the form of gold-painted nude men.

My annual gym rat photo, now age 66. For the last three and a half years, I’ve been doing body weight training and Zumba five times a week. It’s been a great way to reduce pain from past injuries, prevent future injuries and also lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Racism is not just hate. It can also be a dismissive attitude toward any opinion you express, or stubbornly held ignorance that does not allow for a respectful relationship. It can be resentment that you are here, or a belief that you are the “other”and will never be “us.”

I used to dream of my h.s. school art teacher who told me I lacked imagination. He’d shake his head in disapproval. Years later, when I was in London for the premiere of the film I co-wrote, I saw him, a small grey man. I wore black. I knew my worth. Never dreamed of him again.

Can I admit that I watched the trailer of The Joy Luck Club and cried? During the making of the movie, I cried a lot, but so did many on the set. And we laughed even more.

A friend facing a serious health challenge gave me challenge of endurance. A 5 minute plank. I thought it would be impossible. It would be if I did not try. I started at 1:00, then went to 1:30, then :1:45. I am now at 3 minutes and working to the next level.

For Christmas one year, my Auntie Kwan sent me a box of stationery. On each sheet was an illustration of a hand holding a pen and the words “From the desk of Amy Tan.” It came with matching pencils. I loved it, because I loved to write letters to friends and I loved to draw.

My cholesterol numbers were 283. Three months after switching to plant-based diet, I went down to 249 total and the individual HDL and LDL numbers went from high cardiovascular risk to borderline. Triglycerides down from 218 to 83. By year end it should improve even more.

@neilhimself Happened to me. Audio publisher never paid, kept the rights, threatened to sue me if i recorded with others. He did that to everyone. One guy sued, spent $2 mil and won. Never got paid. Audio publisher and wife died of cancer in their 40s & 50s. Karma?
