Academia is vile. And academics who think that they can continue writing supposedly radical, feminist, anti-racist, liberatory and what not scholarship while actively being horrible & unkind to 'junior' colleagues & students can fuck off. That's my rant for the week. Good night.
Meanwhile the Lewisham New Cross Deptford community is working v hard to keep the only community leisure pool in the area from shutting down - a pool beloved by so many residents for whom it's one of the few spaces of being together . Follow
@SaveWavelengths
to support & join!
Academia is wild. You can basically disparage an anti racist movement led by Black & PoC students (and stay away from it) and then not even a year later, organise a panel on fighting racism and invite other Black & PoC students to be on it.
Mignolo's support for a book by a Hindu supremacist is unforgivable. Can we now also take time to address the many Hindutva academics passing off as poco/feminist/critical whatnot in the 'Western' academy & all those white & other scholars who support them & sing their praises?
The silence of many academics 'working on' Palestine... Echoes of the silence of Indian feminists 'working on' Kashmir in Aug 2019 and at several other times .. And of course the Free Palestine tweets from the latter now.. We see you all.
Muting this. if you're raging over this, great but direct most/all your rage to the Hindutva government & its ties to imperial healthcare regimes that have caused this carnage. Fight to free all prisoners & support key workers, most of whom are dalit bahujan. Modi-Shah need to go
I wrote an essay on the questions, intricacies, and complexities that come with teaching on/with/about gender, race, and sexuality and of embracing engaged feminist pedagogies for the latest issue of
@KohlJournal
. Check out the whole issue, it is so good!
@wawisloyola
Also universities to 👩🏾🧑🏿🧔🏾👩🏾🦱: you make us so global & bring all this 'knowledge' from 'there'... Come work with us but we won't pay for your visa
Hello twitter, I am so happy to share (and do a not so humble brag) that last week I found out that I won a student-led Teaching Award at Goldsmiths this year for 'Challenging and Inspiring Teaching'... What a first year at Goldsmiths it has been & I am so so so overwhelmed!
Demos for Palestine across India - even as the govt and so many Indians cheer on Israel.
All today - join in different cities, be safe. Fuck the India Israel alliance.

To anyone doing any kind of anti-racist 'Decolonising' 'liberating' or even 'diversity' work in institutions (esp in the one I work at) : you have to actively not let your work whitewash the racist violence in these spaces. Otherwise, you're part of the problem.
Yes extracting sand from Cambodia (& other places) to build these gardens while disposessing entire communities & having some of the worst labour practices for 'foreign workers' in the world (who build these) but getting away with it all because authoritarianism, wonders, beauty
I’ve wanted to make a doc on the wonders of Singapore’s ‘Garden City’ plan for *years*.
But have always been told UK audiences don’t want to see modern or international gardens.
So I went out and made it myself on instagram. Ep 1: The Airport, out now!
Amazing action by Goldsmiths students at a 'feminist' event on campus when the Warden, Frances Corner, was speaking. NEOLIBERAL WHITE FEMINISM IS NOT OUR FEMINISM 🔥 (video via the SU)
You took Black & PoC students form
@GoldAntiRacism
to court last year as they protested institutional racism. You made BAME cleaners work in a pandemic. Look at your permt staff - where are Black women (& WoC) & how are they treated? You're not renewing precarious BAME staff.
We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our Black students, colleagues, graduates and friends.
We condemn racism in all its forms. We admit our failings and know we are all responsible for making change.
Today we will be taking part in
#blackoutuesday
Quick thread - On UK universities not shutting down & why the demand for GP 'fit notes' from staff who want alternative work arrangements in the coming weeks is ableist, racist, ignores the reality of precarious workers & actually is just really ridiculous
#CoronavirusPandemic
When universities want to celebrate the scholarship of women of colour in huge ways but don't change their hiring practices and continue to have mostly white departments. If you want to celebrate the work of woc, how about hiring some?
Definitely cried in
@LalehKhalili
's office during the PhD (💕 she was so kind!) & in many other spaces in uni. Still cry on campus as a lecturer & many students have cried in my office/presence. Can we please normalise crying (& fight the conditions that sometimes make us cry?)
A student cried from stress in a meeting with me today & then said they were embarrassed. I told them about the time I loud ugly cried in a prof’s office during my MA programme. They said knowing that helped. How many of y’all out there have cried in a prof’s office?
Hospitals being at capacity also means that chronically ill & disabled people are unable to access regular treatment - a lot of which keeps us alive, out of pain, and is v imp. My appointments were all cancelled from March to Oct and started again in Nov, now back to cancelled.
Being at 0% ICU capacity means one bad car accident, one bad fall, one bad allergic reaction, etc. where you’d otherwise survive could literally kill you. 0% ICU capacity affects EVERYONE not just those who get covid
Students in India (studying in UK universities) do not have the fucking bandwidth right now to fill your paperwork to change their assessment deadlines. Like just give them all the time they need or better still abolish assessments for all (and definitely penalties for 'delays')
My Amritsari dadi always said that everyone in Amritsar knew someone who died at the hands of the British in
#JallianwalaBagh
. This is an erasure of living memories of colonial violence, of resistance, of the histories of our families. Shame on the govt for
#JallianwalaBaghSmarak
Let it be noted that management of
@GoldsmithsUoL
has rejected all carefully crafted proposals from unions, from departments, from staff to stop redundancies and put an end to the restructure. They bring this upon all of us and the Uni. Support us. Boycott the institution.
BREAKING: UCU has today called for a global boycott of
@GoldsmithsUoL
The university has been hit with the ultimate sanction because management refuses to halt the sacking of up to 46 staff

Hello! I turned 36 today and tested negative on a PCR and also miraculously have five friends who don't have covid right now in london. Yay

I have a serious question - how does a community deal w an academic whose support for a fascist/murderous/RW/casteist regime back 'home' is completely missed by white (& other) academics who think this person is very radical/feminist? Like, what do we do? This person's everywhere
Goldsmiths students occupied Deptford Townhall today to protest against racism on campus (including some particular recent events) & the university's inadequate response to address racism and take it seriously.
#OneGoldsmiths
?
💜 So this happened today; I am so happy and ever so grateful to Laleh, my brilliant PhD supervisor, and to Neve and Vron, my examiners (and to many many others) 💜
Wooohoooo.... Many many warm congratulations to Akanksha Mehta (
@SahibanInExile
) whose doctoral thesis, "Right-Wing Sisterhood: Everyday Politics of Hindu Nationalist Women in India and Zionist Settler Women in Israel- Palestine," has won the Best Dissertation Award from EISA.
Hi, I make memes now. They may or may not be based on things that have actually happened (to me or to others). They may or may not be about academic life (mine or that of others). Any resemblance is purely coincidental (or not). And yes, I am not going to shut the fuck up.
Everyone: Tier 4 in London/ SE, UK people not allowed to enter many other countries, we are fucked, better stay indoors, incompetent cruel state, mutating virus
Universities sending emails: "At the moment, campus is planned to reopen after the Christmas break on 4 January 2021."
Lol academics who do not do ANY care-work in the university, whose students have faced the devastating brunt of their terribly uncaring ways & pedagogies (and have brought this up only for the academics to deny/ignore/run) - are now organising conferences on care. What a joke.
Can we now expect feminist IR academics to write a dozen new articles on this photograph? (most of them will be about 'gender' and 'women' officers without a single analysis of race, empire, imperial war)
Waking up every day to messages from mom & friends with the news of who didn't make it through the last day/night.. attending the cremation of my nani's best friend/neighbour of sixty years/ a second mum to my mum on zoom this morning.. And only feeling rage and numbness.
I am inmunecompromised due to chronic illness, the assoc lecturer on the module lives with an elderly parent. Several students have emailed saying they're disabled, vulnerable, living with those at risk, or v anxious & yet the institution wants us to go ahead with class on Tues
Crip Theory Reading Group this evening.. Online. All welcome. We continue reading work by

Solidarity with all students at Goldsmiths who don't know their timetables even as classes start next week & are unable to schedule work, childcare, medical appointments and more. This is really appalling and all the uncertainty on everything is affecting students & staff a lot
Academics, please just fucking stop it with your banal hot takes on everything. Just saw someone use 'postcolonial' in the most basic boring tweet on Boris getting Covid. Like, please just stop. Take care of your students & let them take care of you & each other. That's all.
So basically when Black and PoC students speak on your well crafted panels, they are all good & we must listen. When they occupy a building and build an amazing world, fighting the institution with all they have, then you undermine them.
An essay I wrote from the heart ♥️
I use Julietta Singh's book No Archive Will Restore You to think through institutional racism, archives and bodies, and the collective organising of
@GoldAntiRacism
and the occupation of Deptford Town Hall.
'How do we realise solidarities through the political work of dreaming, imagining, creating, and nurturing while holding each other?'
Read Akanksha Mehta's (
@AjeebAurat
) new post on embodied archives of institutional violence and
@GoldAntiRacism
We said goodbye to my dear nani today. She died earlier this week. She lived a long life, it is comforting to know she is not in pain anymore. She was the kindest, most generous, funniest, most loving & loved person I have known. I'd like to think today's sunset was for her 💛
We get it. It's only anti racism when you have control. It's only a future you want to imagine when you're centered in it.
If it is not clear from this, I am truly exhausted and annoyed.
White people (esp white men) in academia who say things like "but I don't know how to 'decolonise' my reading list. Should I ask x (poc) or y (poc)?" Use google or a library. There are toolkits/books/discussions/radio shows/entire festivals on this/reading lists/videos..
The only thing to do after the police violence at the
#claphamcommon
vigil today is to keep taking to the streets in the coming days and weeks. Not this doorsteps and lights at home stuff, but actually reclaiming streets, fighting the police, & collectively grieving and raging ✊🏽
Friendship breakups are so difficult & gut wrenching & I know we're talking about them from tine to time. But I'd love to chat more to others -what does it even mean to breakup a friendship? And the mess of emotions & practicalities & grief & heartbreak & anger when disentangling
If you've got the freshers' flu, please ffs, stay home if you can. And if you can't, mask up and avoid places with more people. Don't sit in the cafe opposite uni and cough for half hour, while shouting - I don't have covid, don't worry.
Enough with all your fat phobic tweets about 'summer outfits', pandemic 'weight gain', 'failing at life' because 'weight gain' and all sorts of crap. The amount of daily fat phobia (here and everywhere) from leftists and all sorts of feminist queer radical folks is endless
So I am going to say this.
@GoldAntiRacism
has had a huge victory & I am astounded at how many people (including staff at GS) who previously didn't care to engage with the movement & even dissed it are now suddenly full of praise and admiration...
Academics (and union activists) expressing shock in chats/on social media and asking - 'but why are people self destructing?' and going on and on without once mentioning the words race, racism, whiteness.. Yes we're all upset & devastated but we also do know why this is happening
No justice, no peace. No Murderous police. This is a vigil, we do not need your services. Police go home, arrest your own. Shame on you.
#claphamcommon
more women being detained
Everything is intense in times of strikes, pandemic & all the fights on so many fronts. I just want to take a moment this morning & mark that today is the first year anniversary of the beginning of the the 137 day anti-racist occupation by
@GoldAntiRacism
. What a year. ✊🏽💜
There we go. The world is so fucked rn. The violence of racial capitalism so stark. The need for collective care so urgent. And we have IR theorists thinking that their 'debate' on if 'IR theory is racist' (or if their work is racist or they are) is actually relevant. Fuck IR.
Hello, Hindutva supporters are circulating a clip of me from the DGH conf yest & also tagging/tweeting at my workplace, colleagues, students. They've found this account too. Goldsmiths folks, if you're tagged in these tweets, pls ignore & block. I stand by everything I said.
It's taken a lot of labour from mainly students, SU sabbs and staff, PoC, WoC, & many precarious staff/Associate Lecturers to put this together - here is the programme for teach-outs at Goldsmiths during the
#UCUstrike
from 25 Nov to 4 Dec. Join us at the pickets & teach outs!
Between 2013-14, I spent a lot of time w women (& some men) in Hindutva orgs for my doctoral research. This attack on
#JNU
is not 'random' - wish to target educational institutions (like JNU) in all sorts of ways + mob like attacks with sticks/lathis has always been a core plan
It's all connected (just a reminder, I know you know). Austerity that closes domestic violence shelters, patriarchal violence of the state & the home, individualisation of care, living through a pandemic. Pls look after those anxious about staying 'home'
This is a serious issue that points to many things - 1) the way 'decolonial' on one hand has lost all meaning but also on the other is being used by the Hindu right wing - anyone who is serious about decolonial thought & organising, do better ffs
3) some Hindutva academics have fooled entire disciplines (case in point feminist & poco IR), positioned themselves as marginalised critical voices while supporting Modi, Hindutva,casteism that underpins it all. They've gotten away with lots & rely on academic nepotism to do so
I am finally home after a few days in hospital due to mild respiratory failure caused by pneumonia (not covid, thankfully). It'll be a few weeks to recover. No visitors were allowed & I can't speak (so no calls), but felt so held the whole time. Huge love to my dearest ones 💚
Omg just no no no no. Shut this down. We want an abolitionist feminism not this 'meaningful strategy co-owned by cops' shit.
@ReclaimTS
spare us your white carceral feminism, give the money you raised to orgs like
@SistersUncut
, and just stop this.
Look at the numbers for our solidarity rally! This is not a normal strike.
@GoldsmithsUoL
management has bitten off more than it can chew. We demand
#NoJobCuts
!
#Goldstrike
@suchitrav
Was just thinking about this? All your liberal arts, culture, film, literature folks? Where are they now? They need their JILF invites right?
Universities/managers suddenly concerned about borders & how staff will navigate them...they want you to tell them if you're leaving the country in the weeks after
#Brexit
. Where was all the concern when 'global south' and poc staff navigated ANY border all these years?
If you're an academic and you only come to this space to promote your new publication or talk/event (even if sometimes these are actually worth reading and attending) - i am pressing unfollow tbh. Fed up of every space turning into a site of academic self promotion.
1/ I had the first dose of the AstraZeneca Oxford vaccine yest morning ('clinically extremely vulnerable') & of course, I am relieved, but can't stop thinking about people with illness & disability who will not be on these lists because medical model of 'diagnosis' is so violent
Imagine starting with 'Diversity is a crucial factor in ensuring that any field of study is able to thrive and grow' and then having an all white panel? 'Gender balance' is all about whiteness right? Sick and tired of this shit. Feminist IR, you have a whiteness problem. Face it.
If you're attending
#BISA2019
, find out more about the roundtable we'll be holding with
@BISAGIRWG
to discuss promotion of gender balance in Security Studies journal publishing.
If your climate 'justice' bans meat/dairy but doesn't think about the consequences of increased consumption of vegan alternatives on indigenous communities & the 'global south' (almond/cashew milk are good examples), then please rethink your politics & 'progressiveness'..
Tired of this shit. And nope it is isn't just about the 'feelings' of fat people. Ask us (especially if those who are fat and Black, PoC, queer, trans) how we're treated by doctors and medical care professionals & the deadly consequences of the ways this plays out. Exhausted.
Interested in the ethics of feminist research? Register for this workshop - From positionality to transformation: the ethics and politics of feminist research, happening at
@sheffielduni
on 1 May 2019.. Spread the word, especially to PhD students!
2) Mignolo and MANY other scholars based in the 'West' (including non white ones) make no effort in understanding the actual context and details of how Hindutva works (esp in the academy and around pedagogy and knowledge production)
Goldsmiths campus cat supports the
#UCUstrike
and demands the university listen to us on pensions, pay, equality, workloads and more. Join the pickets, support the fight, hang out with this cat ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽 (Photo by my colleague Tassia)
@GoldsmithsUCU
I know that you can't trust institutions but I am in despair thinking that 250+ staff, 1500+ students/supporters, local MPs, unions have all urged Goldsmiths SMT to retract the legal action they're taking against majority poc students from
@GoldAntiRacism
& yet they won't budge
When GARA was occupying Deptford Town Hall & demanding that statues of slave traders & owners on the building be brought down, I'll never forget a comment from a feminist postcolonial theorist to me - 'they want to take down statues? What are we? South Africa? They've lost it'
Second dose of Astra Zeneca done 🙏🏼💜 for anyone wondering, if you're over 30 but have a history of clots/CVST, the guidance is still to go ahead with AZ (you must not be on warfarin anymore) & monitor yourself closely. So fingers crossed for me & all else in this 'category' 🤞🏼🧿
A year of hard protests. So many farmers' lives taken by the state. The new farm laws have been cancelled ✊🏼✊🏼 but don't be taken by the fascist's folded hands & apology... And as many have reminded us 'farmer' is not beyond caste, the state isn't the only fight.
Perhaps instead of focusing on how to make 'feminism' 'more inclusive', feminist IR &
@ftgs_isa
can reflect on how it arrived at the point where it conflates feminism with a white feminism that excludes black, Indigenous and women of colour?
FTGS friends, what would you wish to be the theme of our planned Town Hall meeting in Hawaii, my idea was to focus on feminism itself and how to make it more inclusive, but also on intersectional diversity, what do you think?
Someday, can we name names? Exhausting to see people get away with so much horrible behaviour & often we know who we are talking about and warn each other in private, but these people continue to thrive & keep doing what they do. Also to those who checked in, thank you 💜
Most of my colleagues and I have spent the last days addressing questions & anxieties of students that are all to do with the complete dysfunction of
@GoldsmithsUoL
. Instead of fixing this, the management are instead looking to fire people & restructure things in worse ways.
Honestly, I can't go on 'as usual' and none of should be expected to do so. Waking up to news of death and loss everyday, near and far. I called my sister the other day and she answered and immediately said - 'has someone else died?'
Hindutva academics (masquerading as liberal/feminist/what not in the 'west') going on & on about orientalist/white reporting of ongoing covid devastation & death/funerals in India while actively supporting a fascist regime that continues to murder & never speaking up against it.
Hello! In case anyone is interested - I am giving a talk tomorrow (12:30-2 UK time) on
@GoldAntiRacism
's practices of community accountability and solidarity, institutional discomforts & the foolishness & failures of most institutional'anti racism' plans
Crip theory reading groups meets again today. Come join us - all welcome, it's online. No preparation needed - who has time to read before reading group! We read together, slowly... Today we read a chapter from Shayda Kafai's book about the art and activism of
@sinsinvalid
Our employer
@GoldsmithsUoL
is making many colleagues in professional services & academic staff in History & Eng redundant.They made such a fuss about MA in Black British History only to send risk of redundancy letters to staff teaching on this, not even 2 years later. Horrible.
Solidarity to all WoC academics & teachers supporting students through deadlines (and much more) in a pandemic when their supervisors & convenors have conveniently stepped away. We know the amount of invisiblised work we do every year, all the time, but this year it is endless.
On the day when we're all calling out Mignolo, we're all witnessing these dynamics play out in another context & staying silent. It's easy to call Mignolo out (and we should) but how are we going to actually address this issue in its full pervasiveness given how academia is
If like me, you're in London with an ever present lump in your throat, thinking about Kashmir & Delhi & everything rotten going on 'there' & wondering what you can do 'here' - come to this protest tomorrow (if you're able). It's one of the things we can do right now.
#DelhiPogrom
