During the 1806-7 winter campaign in Poland, soldiers of the Grande Armée adopted the war cry "au chat!" meaning "to the cat!" Why? They heard their Russian enemies using their traditional battle-cry "oorah," which sounds like the French phrase "au rat," meaning "to the rat."
