Arizona will become the first state court in the nation to eliminate the removal of jurors without cause. Beginning January 1, 2022, litigators will need to demonstrate that a potential juror cannot be fair and impartial before removing them.
After serving as a legislator, Lorna E. Lockwood was the first woman in Arizona elected as a superior court judge. After 10 years as a trial court judge, Lockwood became the first woman to serve on the Arizona Supreme Court when elected to that role in 1960.

Congratulations Ron Reinstein, retired Maricopa County Superior Ct judge who received the Public Service Award at the Arizona Region of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Learned Hand Awards. He was recognized for dedicating his career to improving the justice system in AZ.
Hon. Lorna E. Lockwood served 14 years as a justice on the Arizona Supreme Court. In 1965 Lockwood became the first woman in the United States to serve as chief justice, leading Arizona’s courts as chief justice again in 1970.
