's letter of recommendation, I wrote about the word I love and probably use the most: inshallah. it's an arabic word and a way of thinking about life.
Irish Prime Minister to Biden: "We see our history in the eyes of the Palestinians, a story of displacement, deprivation, a denied national identity, forced migration, discrimination, and now hunger."
โI was chubby and we had plenty of food.โ
This Palestinian girl in north Gaza talks about her life before the war, when she used to have a lunch box full of food โคต๏ธ
when someone asks me "indoor masks forever?", I reply with "what level of daily death will you tolerate?" because its been above 1,000 per day for six months now.
Two Columbia University students, both IOF soldiers, sprayed a chemical weapon on peaceful protesters. Skunk spray is used on Palestinians in the West Bank by the Israeli occupation. It is known to cause nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
@Columbia
must take action.
I know people say "just move!" from states where their rights are being persecuted and I know that impulse is coming from a good place; but usually the most marginalized the state targets are also the people who have the least means to do so.
just pay people to stay home for a few weeks to bring down spread, mandate hazard pay for those who are working, an OSHA standard for all workers, send out N95 masks and tests. and then, you could discuss reducing quarantine upon negative test.
anyone who publishes an endemic COVID oped and says we have to live with it has to also write out a paragraph about how hospitals are going to deal with this going forwards. no more vibes, where are your plans buddy
with the cost of food rising, its unconscionable that the the *universal* free lunch program is ending this summer and that there is no effort to bring back the child tax credit.
New: 70 Democrats condemn "River to the Sea" phrase.
They call for a ceasefireโbut not for Israel. They say Israel has to defend itself & follow law โas best as possible."
The signersโvalidating attacks against the lone Palestinian in Congressโdo not mention the 10,000 killed.
its always "lockdowns are anti working class because the working class have to work and everyone else stays home" and never "pay the working class so they dont have to work during a raging pandemic"
since October in the US:
- killing of a six year old palestinian boy
- attempted murder of 3 palestinian students
- running over a student protestor with a car
- chemically attacking students at a protest
- stabbing of a 23 year old Palestinian

Motaz's latest video features a severed hand they find the rubble. incredibly graphic and makes me sick but this is what we must emphasize & remember - airstrike rip people apart, it throws their limbs in all directions, it collapses skulls, splatters brains. its not just "death"
Melissa Barrera: โI pray day and night for no more deaths, for no more violence, and for peaceful co-existence. I will continue to speak out for those that need it most and continue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom. Silence is not an option for me.โโฆ
Delta will allow people who refused to wear masks to get off its no-fly list, which as of February was about 1,900 people, the airline said. The move would not apply to those whose infractions were more serious than just refusing to wear a mask.
what little blessings & light born into such a dark time. may Allah protect them and their family. may they lead happy, peaceful lives. may they be able to return to their homes.

We started off on Jan 21st with 400k dead and vaccines to be rolled out. We end the year with 800k deaths, only 60% of the country fully vaccinated, even less with boosters, a more transmissible variant and no real policies to stop the spread. A failure on all levels.
people think genocide is hyperbole. but it is not. when leaders of regimes go on TV and declare every person in civil society - journalists, ambulance drivers, aid workers - as de facto combatants - they are setting the stage for mass murder. thats whats happening here.

The Israeli representative at the United Nations launches a tirade against the UN, UN agencies, UN workers and UN officials
contrary to what pro Israel supporters argue, universities have punished students at an unprecedented rate in the past two months. NYU suspended a student for pulling down posters, Harvard evicted a student for blocking someone from filming, Brown had 25 jewish students ...
I've become convinced this is a psyop. No one could be stupid enough to think that making you miss a flight is a way to convert you to a political cause

says Kavanaugh, Barrett, and Thomas committed impeachable offenses, " I believe lying under oath is an impeachable offense and violating federal law and not disclosing income from political organizations as Clarence Thomas did is also potentially an impeachable offense."
Israelโs Defence Ministry says its forces seized about five million Israeli shekels in cash (approximately $1.33m) in their operations in the Gaza Strip, adding that the money would be put into Israelโs treasury.

we have a billion shows about cops but no comedies about postal workers, have you met a postal worker -- they are way funnier than cops (who aren't funny at all) and can roast you out of existence
if you want masks off in schools (which I think is a bad idea), then you should at least be amicable for a remote option for parents who want that option for kids who are higher risk or live with higher risk family. this accommodation is not provided. it is called "extreme".
talk of this PPP loan stuff makes it evident some people really forget what that summer of 2020 was like -- within months companies stopped hazard pay, there were long lines at food banks for miles & people relied on unemployment which got cut/paused at diff times
these students have likely seen: a body crushed by a bulldozer, body parts strewn about, NICU babies decomposing in their beds, bloodied flour bags. they have heard the cries of a six year old girl begging for help. administrators threats ring hollow in that context.
I'm someone who works in public health communication and messaging. the CDC's problem is not that they arent focused on messaging. the CDC's problem is that they have special interests and an administration that wants a certain type of message.
the united states has the largest stockpile of vaccines & still the most deaths. other countries that have barely vaccinated people (thanks to vaccine apartheid) have way less deaths. this isnt because the vaccines don't work but because we refuse to do anything else.
encampments at Columbia, MIT, Yale, UMD, UMichigan, UNC, NYU, Yale and surely expected to grow. the students and the young people of America want the genocide to end, they want divestment and they want a free Palestine. full solidarity with the students.
it is neither pepper spray nor stink spray. Itโs skunk - and it was developed by the IDF. I donโt think you can even purchase it as a civilian. so if former soldiers from an army use a crowd control weapon on students on campus - resulting in some being hospitalized. huge scandal
@chrislhayes
I guess itโs possible some pro-Israel students did something very stupid, but connected to the IDF? Really? They may have inhaled pepper spray but it sounds like they may also have gotten a bit high on their own (conspiracy theory) supply?
the fact we are talking about "generational harm" and "normal" being masked kids and not the expiration of the child tax credit causing a huge jump in child poverty ... I just
none of the mainstream pandemic plans/discourse really have an answer for what disabled and/or immunocompromised people should do until the pandemic ends. they are effectively erased from these plans.
so they admitted it. this is about keeping the economy running. you could just shut things down and pay people to stay home at this point before things get worse.
NEW: CDC guidance halving isolation/quarantine times was โbased on the anticipation of a large # of cases might impact societal function,โ Rochelle Walensky told us. Some experts worry it could contribute to transmission. w/

learning to live with the virus should actually mean wearing masks until the virus reaches a low prevalence, building up regular daily testing + trace infrastructure, ventilation in all buildings. living life as normal is ignoring the virus not learning to live with it.
I ordered COVID tests on Monday, today they are out for delivery. so far the USPS (in my experience) has provided more of a seamless pandemic service provision than any other public or private agency.
"what are we supposed to do? offer free testing forever? the pandemic will end!"
what if I told you about a system that offered medical care and services for free in perpetuity
alarmed at the discourse that is "COVID-19 is not going away so get used to it" rather than "COVID-19 isn't going away, we need to adjust our strategy to control it"
voting I think is a small little thing that liberals value too highly as a sole focus and I think others are too quick to dismiss as not meaningful at all
if 1,000-3,000 deaths a day (which has been the norm for the past six months) persists as "normal" then we have bigger problems than indefinite masking
The National Guard searching bags at the entrance to the Grand Central subway station. Earlier today Kathy Hochul announced she would send 750 National Guard members to subway stations throughout NYC.
I keep thinking about May 2021 and how things could have been different if the CDC did not issue that disastrous guidance. so often I hear "I feel like I was lied to" because people were lied to. we knew at that point that our vax % was not high enough to make that move.
apartheid states dont end through convincing people that people are human and that they deserve rights. apartheid ends when the costs on the state & those who benefit from its systems are greater than the benefits of maintaining that system.
one of the things hyperindividualism in a pandemic does is that it creates interpersonal conflict over all sorts of things. and so this conflict, then replaces any sort of meaningful pushback towards those in power and gives cover to the state.
Our Administration is launching the Clean Air in Buildings Challenge โ a call to action for leaders and building owners and operators of all types to assess indoor air quality and adopt key strategies to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in their buildings.
so many opeds are like "accept that America's public health infrastructure is flawed as it is and so do this instead" and I'm like nah, this is the richest country in the world that has money for war -- I don't have to accept a falling apart PH infrastructure.
dont let people make you think you are being ungrateful for $10k in means tested forgiveness while asking you to repay. $10k forgiveness is an insult, when PPP loans were forgiven in their millions, when billions are thrown to the military. insult and nothing else.
the way people in Martha's Vineyard, year long residents swung into action to help the migrants who had recently arrived reminds me much like how people flocked to the airports to be in solidarity and do legal and other aid work within minutes of the muslim ban
I am saddened that you would look at essential supplies being seized that people use to clean and heal themselves with and conclude that the people taking the goods are the sick ones and not society.
Whatever is happening at the Convention Center has grown into quite a cast of characters. Thereโs a pastor telling ppl theyโre going to hell and someone drowning him out with a French horn, a dude dressed as Joe Biden, plus a guy in a big dinosaur costume
Imagine your child. Your child. Needing amputation to save their life. And there is no anesthesia. And your job is to be there and comfort your child, hold them as they scream in agony. Pain that could have been avoided with medicine we have, with a ceasefire to begin with.
An Israeli tank shelled Ghazal's family's car as they attempted to flee to southern Gaza. 4-year-old Ghazal was gravely injured, and her leg had to be amputated without anesthesia.
"My daughter says everyone has two legs except her," Ghazal's mother said.
with 500k cases a day, really there is no argument against moving things remote for a few weeks tbh. these are disastrous numbers we've never seen in the pandemic.
if you are a Vice President Campus Life and you think its appropriate to make a student homeless overnight over a protest, you should resign and be barred from ever working with students again
Giving us 15 minutes to pack up and leave from our housing is seriously twisted. I am not surprised at all โ I am glad administration is finally showing their face to the general student body, because student organizers have known from the start how evil these administrators are.
arrested (charges now dropped), Columbia suspended SJP and JVP, Brandeis banned SJP, Columbia cancelled talks due to 'security concerns'. this is on top of the outsider trucks that are allowed to have a presence on campus due to public roads.
If you told me eighteen months ago, ppl would be trying to convince folks to live with the virus and continue living their normal lives even as the pandemic surged โ it would have been hard to imagine but maybe not difficult to believe. They will do the same with the climate.
everyone's life got worse to a degree the past two years but there's a difference between "masks have made it difficult to have good social interactions" and "I cant go more than 2 hours without having to take a nap because I'm dealing with a post viral syndrome two years later"
The pro Israel argument is no longer tenable so what folks seek is total suppression. Faculty being fired and students being expelled for saying things like "from the river to the sea".
democrats are like "its not congress, its republicans" but then when we say okay fight republicans, they are like when they go low, we go high, bipartisanship rules!
this should immediately prompt the resignation of the Emory president. In fact, all university presidents who authorized arrests of students, staff and faculty should immediately resign. it has been a disgusting and embarrassing week for higher education.
It is worth watching this CNN video from the moment Emory Econ Professor
@CarolineFohlin
came across the violent arrest of a protester on campus and asked the police, with shock, "What are you doing?" That's all that prompted an officer to hurl her to the ground and handcuff her.
I am grateful that people in Gaza will have some breathing room, but we cannot let up our pressure. this ceasefire is only a few days. needs to be indefinite.
