The time of my writing retreat is almost at an end. But while the text may be rough, I've been able to write around 40,000 words at this spot, 50m from Morjim beach. By my standards, that's a lot. So I'd call it a success

So this is interesting. @JennClapp introduced me to a tool on @FT of which I was not aware. The spike in key #cropfutures began around July 2020; the war in #Ukraine only aggravated the underlying trend. Big agriculture was not as resilient during #COVID19 as is made out

Today would have been my mother's 87th birthday. It is remarkable that, only 10 years after her death, I am most likely the only person on the planet who knows that today would have been her birthday. It is a testimony to how ephemeral our lives are

Tomorrow marks 30 years since @via_campesina was founded in Mons, Belgium. LVC has not accomplished its end goals, but it has accomplished a lot more than many thought possible, and changed the terms of numerous agrarian debates

I am pleased to say that the impact factor for @CanDevStudies , published by @CASID_ACEDI , from which I just stepped down as Editor, has risen from 1.058 to 1.6. One should not place too much weight on these measures, but still ... it feels good

This is very true. Scholars from developing countries all too often know that models that do not recognize an agricultural constraint to growth fail to understand the structure of the economy. This literature is ignored in most #devecon training today #globaldev

There are some important bastions of heterodox scholarship in the Global South, e.g. in India, Brazil, Argentina and China. As @haroom said, maybe they just don't ascribe to the Northern orthodoxy. To be inclusive of this scholarship we need to broaden the field of dev econ. 3/5

UBI is like land reform. Do it as a stand alone policy and it won't work. But comprehensive agrarian reform does work - and UBI nested within care-supportive public services that build capabilities would transform societies
