Official Twitter account of the Office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Helping people afford their lives and live with dignity, safety & respect.
We cannot sit back and hope that things will get better 13 days from now. We must hold the President of the United States accountable today, using any and all tools available.
It with a large degree of humility and a great seriousness, I accept for my office the responsibility for leadership on this critical case involving the killing of George Floyd.
We are going to bring to bear all the resources necessary to achieve justice in this case.
George Floyd mattered. Somebody loved him. His life had value. He lost it yesterday in a way that raises pain and trauma once again for so many. We owe it to everyone affected to investigate thoroughly. We will seek justice and we will find it.
I've issued a binding opinion that public schools may not deny students' participation in graduation ceremonies bc of unpaid meal debts. Under MN law, the dignity &respect that comes from participating in a grad ceremony cannot be restricted by your ability to afford your life.
Ppl protesting in person to “liberate” MN right now are irresponsible, dangerous & risking Minnesotans’ lives. Doubt it? Look at SoDak: they’re not sheltering in place & have >4x MN’s rate of cases. They’re 15th in US; MN is 50th. In SD they’re free to get sick & infect others.
BREAKING: The PRO Act is now the law of the land in MN. This means your rights to abortion, contraception and privacy in healthcare decisions are now guaranteed. Thanks to everyone who made this day possible. This will help every Minnesotan live with dignity, safety and respect.
A landlord in Sandstone cut off his tenants' utilities to force them out of their home while they're sheltering in place w their at-risk 4yo daughter. That's against
@GovTimWalz
's Exec Order & MN law. I took him to court this afternoon to make him stop.
Having
@AGEllison
lead this prosecution keeps faith with our commitment to ensure justice for George Floyd. Thank you, Attorney General. I can think of nobody better to do this critical work.
After reports a TN co was recruiting private security for MN’s elections, we investigated. We just won a settlement: that co will *not* recruit/provide security to MN before, during or after the election & will *not* intimidate voters in MN or anywhere.
The reason ppl are hurting isn’t bc of the
#StayHomeMN
order—it’s bc
#COVID19
pandemic is exposing huge rips in our social fabric. US has no mandatory paid leave or univ healthcare, unaffordable housing, min wage so low no one can live off it. We can fix all that *and* stay safe.
Today I joined 7 AGs in respectfully calling on Pres. Biden to cancel federal student debt. It’s a crushing $1.7 TRILLION that could go straight into our economy but instead is harming families and aggravating unfairness & inequity. Let’s do it and give all of us a lift.
Amir Locke's life mattered. He was only 22 years old and had his whole life ahead of him. His family and friends must now live the rest of their lives without him. (1/3)
I sued Pres Trump & the Postmaster Gen today to halt drastic changes to USPS service that threaten our votes & ppl's lives. Our lawsuit says they violated fed law in making these changes in this way. They’ve now said they’re backing down. I’m moving ahead.
Simple reminder: during COVID19 and with historically high turnout, counting all legally cast votes will take time. That’s what we expected and is totally normal. Regardless of what anyone else claims, the election is over when and only when all legally cast votes are counted.
My wishes for Merrick Garland as AG: help Americans afford their lives by beefing up antitrust enforcement, help people live with dignity & respect by prioritizing criminal-justice reform, and reestablish the rule of law in the federal govt where it has been sorely lacking.
BREAKING: MN Supreme Court has dismissed an unfounded lawsuit to block the certification of Minnesota’s already-certified election. Proud of my office for defending the safest and highest-turnout election in America and the clear will of the voters.
SCOTUS has overturned Roe—but in MN, your right to choose is protected & that’s not changing.
But Americans everywhere, not only in MN, are in our circle of compassion.
My pledge to you: No one from any state will be prosecuted in MN for seeking an abortion that’s legal in MN.
BREAKING: A fed appeals court vacated a Trump Admin rule that would have repealed the Obama Clean Power Plan and led to more CO2 & greenhouse gas emissions—even while 2020 was the 2nd-hottest year on record. I’m proud Minnesota joined 21 other states in fighting it & winning.
Minnesota and federal law are clear: it is strictly illegal to intimidate or interfere with voters. I want to make to make it crystal clear to anyone who is even *thinking* about intimidating voters that I will not hesitate to enforce the laws against it to the fullest extent.
Thomas Lane has pled guilty to 2nd-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. My thoughts are once again with the victims, George Floyd and his family. Floyd should still be with us. But I am pleased Thomas Lane has accepted responsibility for his role in Floyd’s death.
The Trump Admin is trying to blackmail *legal* immigrants & their families into *not* getting help w food, housing & healthcare that they’re entitled to. I joined a coalition of AGs to fight it: MN is better than that. 3 different courts blocked it today.
Today, Enbridge admitted it breached a confined aquifer in Clearwater Cty while building Line 3, knew it did it, and did not notify the MN DNR as required. This admission comes in response to criminal charges my office filed after having the case referred by the Clearwater 1/4
The court has sustained 8 out of 9 charges against defendants in the murder of George Floyd, incl the most serious ones. All 4 defendants will stand trial for murder & manslaughter in the 2nd degree. This is a positive step fwd in the path to justice.
Now the NY, NJ & HI AGs have won a prelim injunction in their suit vs De Joy & Trump Admin for illegal changes to USPS that would hurt our election. That’s in addition to the one 13 other AGs & I won 10 days ago. AGs protect ppl when the fed govt tries to hurt us.
BREAKING: A federal judge just issued an order in our case halting the Trump Administration's efforts to interfere with mail delivery in advance of the election. We WILL have a free and fair election.
Trusted local election officials are painstakingly counting every legally cast vote. The election will be over when and only when their work is done. This is exactly how it’s supposed to work. We owe them our respect, our thanks and our patience.
BREAKING: We're suing Agri Stats for helping big meat processors coordinate to keep your food prices high.
This anticompetitive behavior is illegal, hurts farmers, and makes it harder for Minnesotans to afford their lives.
I will not stand for it.
President Trump, who has been unable to persuade Congress and the country that a wall is necessary, is forcing a constitutional crisis that harms the people of MN. I've joined 15 states in suing re: his emergency declaration because I cannot allow him to do that.
What does it mean to be cast out and then invited back in?
What does it mean to have a say over the people who represent you?
It means everything.
Yesterday was a good day for justice and democracy. We restored the vote to over 50,000 Minnesotans.
This time next wk voting will be over but vote counting will still be going on, incl in MN—& that’s normal. All votes—no matter where, when or how they were cast—must & will be counted. We can expect officials to take the time it takes to get it right. That’s as it should be.
If you’re alive, you might be able to enjoy some freedoms; if you’re dead, you can’t enjoy any. Anyone is free to disagree with
@GovTimWalz
or me or any elected official. But no one has the freedom to take away someone else’s freedom to live. I condemn this dangerous protest.
Lots of folks are worried about the harm Pres Trump is doing to USPS. Not only the integrity of our votes: ppl rely on it for life-saving meds too. It’s wrong & I’m as concerned as you are. As MN AG I’m looking at *all* my options for holding them accountable as soon as I can.
#BREAKING
: A fed court in NY just ruled Pres Trump cannot exclude undocumented immigrants from congressional apportionment in the
#2020Census
. This is a win in a lawsuit I filed w AGs, cities & counties from across the US in July. Everybody counts means everybody must be counted.
Law enforcement in MN should be focused on serious crimes, not low-level cannabis offenses that lead to significant racial disparities in our criminal-justice system and injustice in our communities, and do little or nothing to keep us safer.
#LegalizeMN
BREAKING:
#mnleg
has restored the vote to 1000s of Minnesotans who can now fully contribute to making our communities stronger, more connected, and safer for all of us. I first proposed this bill 20 yrs ago. Deeply gratified for all the hard work that led to this historic moment.
There are a few reports of disinformation robocalls. Here are the FACTS:
ALL VOTING ENDS at 8PM TONIGHT. You can vote if you’re in line by 8pm. Do NOT arrive later.
Voting is easy, secure and SAFE. Just wear a mask when you go!
Don’t let anyone steal your voice or your vote.
Most people, overwhelmingly, are trying to bring justice to Mr. Floyd’s case and drive toward systemic change. I wouldn’t discount there were some folks who were here for mischief...I’m not going to let them obscure the righteous, noble cause of seeking justice for Mr. Floyd.
I led 23 AGs from across America today in asking AG Barr to reverse his abrupt decision to let DOJ meddle in election results—despite 40 years of policy against it—and to step away from undermining our democracy.
Congratulations to legislators for passing the PRO Act, a critical piece of legislation guaranteeing Minnesotans a fundamental right to make choices about your own body.
Minnesotans deserve access to affordable care to treat their symptoms and address chronic pain without turning to opioids or other serious drugs.

Minnesotans: from now on the ONLY WAY YOU CAN VOTE if you haven’t voted already is IN PERSON. If you have an absentee ballot you haven’t returned, that’s ok: just get to your polling place by 8pm to vote either inside (mask up!) or curbside instead. Make your voice heard by 8pm!
It’s now past the 3:00 pm deadline for hand-delivery of absentee ballots. If you still have an absentee ballot, vote at your polling place until 8:00 pm. You can vote there either inside or “curbside” (from a vehicle).
Find your polling place here:

: Fed judge orders Trump Admin to extend

counting until Oct. 31. This is a win in a case I filed an amicus brief in earlier this month. This is good news for Minnesota and all of America. Everybody counts so everybody must be counted.
What in the world does burning down Migizi and Juxtaposition Arts in the Northside have to do with justice for George Floyd? Nothing.
We are asking for you to let the National Guard have the street after 8:00 p.m. so that we can restore order and build justice.
Loving America fully means reckoning fearlessly with our contradictions and our history—all of it. Loving America fully means holding it to the highest expression of freedom and justice for all—no exceptions. That’s how I choose to love America, on July 4 and every day.
A landlord in Roseville is trying to illegally force a tenant out tomorrow. The tenant asked for more time to find a new place to shelter but the landlord said no. When my office told the landlord what he’s doing is illegal, he said sue me. So I am.
.
@GovTimWalz
has just issued an Exec Order halting evictions during the emergency. I *fully* support it & will vote to approve it at today’s Exec Council mtg. The Gov and
@LtGovFlanagan
are working as hard & fast as they can to protect ppl. This is a big step fwd & I thank them.
The person who discovered insulin nearly 100 yrs ago believe it was unethical to commercialize a lifesaving drug so sold the patent for $1. Now people have to go to Canada to afford it bc the price has gone up 1200% in 20 yrs. Think about it.
#Insulin4all
A woman’s right to control her own body is a fundamental human right. I’m appalled the Supreme Court did not stop Texas’ clearly unconstitutional law from taking effect. It's no accident the law hits low-income women and women of color hardest. You bet I'm planning to fight it.
Folks, in light of the 8th circuit decision last night, if you have not already voted and are not planning to vote in person on Tuesday, you should TURN IN YOUR BALLOT IN-PERSON. Here’s how. Please SHARE WIDELY and go to go learn more.
The
@nytimes
contacted election officials from both parties in all 50 states. Every single one, incl
@MNSteveSimon
, reported no fraud. The President needs to set aside his false claims & game-playing and make way for a smooth transition like every president before him has done.
Minnesotans, a delay means our system is working and every legally cast vote is being counted.
It’s going to take longer to count all votes this year for 3 simple reasons.
1) High turnout
2) Mail in ballots take longer to count
3) Slower counts because of COVID precautions
BREAKING: US Supreme Court just rejected unfounded, fact-free Texas lawsuit to overturn the clear will of the American people. Proud to have opposed it. Time for this madness to end and finally honor the American people.
BREAKING: Texas's lawsuit against GA MI PA & WI is unfounded & evidence-free. Judges across the country have already thrown out 54 lawsuits like it against the voters' clear will. I just joined AGs from 23 states to ask SCOTUS to throw this one out too.
My office has had 150 complaints of price-gouging on items like water, rice, butter, toilet paper, bleach, masks, hand sanitizer & allergy meds. Now we have clear authority to fight it. If this happened to you, contact my office asap. We're ready to help.
POTUS & WH calling COVID-19 “Chinese virus” and worse is dangerous & racist. Dangerous because a pandemic by definition hits everyone, so calling it anything other than it is tells people they’re not responsible for it. Racist because it is. I’m calling it out & you should too.
Walter Mondale was a towering figure in civil rights, a transformative VP & an iconic Minnesotan. As MN AG, he made sure the law was used for justice & was the original people’s lawyer. He once told me of all the jobs he had, being AG was his favorite. I can see why.
Af-Am and white ppl in MN consume cannabis at v similar rates—yet while Black ppl are just 5% of MN pop they make up 30% of cannabis arrests. Criminalizing a product most ppl want legalized, and continuing a legacy of racial injustice in doing so, is not defensible.
#legalizemn
Q: When is the election over?
Incorrect: When one candidate says it is.
Correct: When and only when all the legally cast votes are counted and every voice is heard, however long that takes—not before
Here’s the bottom line: the people will decide the outcome of this election.
No matter how long it takes, our democracy requires we respect the will of the people.
Thank you, Minnesota, for the honor of continuing to serve as your Attorney General. No matter what the next 4 years bring, every decision we make will be based in helping you afford your life and live with dignity, safety, and respect. Everybody counts, everybody matters.
I serve on the MN Board of Pardons. Tomorrow @ 9 am we will take up a posthumous pardon application for Max Mason. He was convicted of rape in connection with the infamous Duluth lynchings that happened 100 yrs ago next week. Tmrw, 100 yrs later, we are poised to do justice. 1/8
The American people decided the outcome of this election—as it should be. Joe Biden will be president with a majority of the electoral college and the popular vote. Now we expect and look forward to a peaceful transition of power.
Voters—no one else—decide elections & have spoken. States run fair, secure elections thx to trusted officials & poll workers—and did so. States certify the results. The fed govt’s role is ensuring an orderly transition & peaceful transfer of power. Anything else is playing games.
All reports are that voting is running smoothly in MN, and we expect it to keep running safely & smoothly. If you haven’t voted yet, you can vote with confidence & have until 8pm to get in line to do so & make sure your vote is counted. Great job, Minnesota—let’s keep it up
All the science about
#COVID19
tells us wearing a mask helps stop the spread. Everyone wants to stop the spread. So there’s every reason to support
@GovTimWalz
’s EO. I do & will vote to approve it. Wearing a mask is how we care for each other as humans and Minnesotans.

The war to overthrow the US govt of 160 yrs ago is being revived today by a treasonous mob storming the US Capitol with confederate flags in a lawless, violent attempt to overthrow our democracy, urged on by the defeated president of the US. They must all be held accountable.
BREAKING: Texas's lawsuit against GA MI PA & WI is unfounded & evidence-free. Judges across the country have already thrown out 54 lawsuits like it against the voters' clear will. I just joined AGs from 23 states to ask SCOTUS to throw this one out too.

7 mass shootings in 7 days. Enough.
@GabbyGiffords
is right: Congress must pass long-overdue common-sense reforms to keep us safer in grocery stores, houses of worship & everywhere we live our lives. The ppl of Boulder & Americans everywhere need it. Now.
The SCOTUS draft opinion would upend 50 yrs of settled law & could harm ppl’s rights beyond abortion & repro care. What can we do? As AG I’ll keep protecting a person’s right to control their own bodies: not stopping now. We’ll win by organizing & offering hope, not despair.
Sharing that I have tested positive for COVID. Bc I’m vaxxed & boosted, my symptoms are only those of a mild cold. I’m out of the country visiting family and am isolating in place. I’m working remotely as normal until it’s safe to return home.
People are dying because they cannot afford their insulin. I can’t say this any more clearly. This bill to provide an emergency supply for folks who can’t afford it is a potential life-saver.
The landlord of a mobile home park in Cosmos MN repeatedly cut off a tenant’s water in an effort to force him out during the pandemic. That’s against MN law &
@GovTimWalz
GovTimWalz’s Exec Order. I sued him today to stop. Not on my watch.

@Protect_Voters
in making it clear that voter intimidation is illegal under state & federal law. Minnesotans can expect our election will run as safely & smoothly as ever, but if I need to enforce laws against voter intimidation, I won't hesitate.
The American people spoke loud and clear: they did not reelect President Trump. In MI he lost by 155K votes. For him to use the power of our govt to intimidate local officials into overturning the people’s vote for his personal benefit is utterly improper & may well be illegal.

Today’s destructive decision from the activist Supreme Court is an attack on the health & safety of Minnesotans & will harm our planet in untold ways.
But it affects only one part of the Clean Air Act, and my office has other tools to protect our planet. We’re going to use them.
Minnesotans can expect our elections will run as safely & securely as always. They can also expect they will be able to vote without intimidation or interference. Minnesota and federal law are clear: it is strictly illegal to intimidate or interfere with voters. Know your rights.
Minnesota is spending significant law enforcement resources enforcing low-level cannabis offenses rather than focusing on more serious crimes. This has resulted in significant racial disparities in our criminal justice system and injustice in our communities.

Most states now make marijuana legal in some form, but federal law hasn't caught up, so most banks won't provide financial services to legal cannabis-related businesses. That has to change. I joined 32 other AGs to support a bill to allow banks to do so.
We might be different colors and live in different places, but we are unified because these guns are literally killing us. Guns turn what should be a fist fight into a funeral.
Victims are counting on us and we're prepared to do more to protect Minnesotans.
The person who discovered insulin 100 yrs ago sold the patent for $1 bc he wanted to help ppl live. Today insulin is unaffordable for too many while Rx drug companies make $Bs in profit off it. No one should ever have to choose between affording their lives & affording to live.
Today marks 100 year anniversary of insulin. 100 years ago the world was gifted with a way to keep loved ones alive who need to inject insulin, today we remember that insulin is not affordable and people are dying d/t cost of a product that was gifted to the world.

Unacceptable. Everyday my office hears from Minnesotans burdened w unbearable student loan debt—while execs are profiting off this crisis & celebrating it. I'm going to fight for more consumer protections for borrowers and stricter regulation of lenders.

Today our justice system did the right thing. I couldn't be happier about Supreme Court protecting LGBTQ workers from discrimination today, which I asked them to do in an amicus brief I filed last year. This is a long time coming for LGBTQ folks & all Americans. Happy Pride.
That landlord in Meeker Co who cut off H2O to force his tenant out during the
