Holy shit. I just got a huge ER bill knocked down by SEVENTY PERCENT because I listened to a Tumblr post that said to call and tell them you can't pay that. I know we all know this but truly, America is a SCAM.
I threw in โincome has been affected by COVID19โ for good measure and they were like we can put you on a payment plan or give you a discount. I asked how much the discount was, they said 70% and my jaw legit dropped. They didnโt ask me for anything else. That was literally it.
โWhen these things happen, itโs not your fault. Itโs not your fault. There are people who are not cool with you existing in the world.โ โ Laverne Cox ๐๐ฅบ
i am not even exaggerating when i say iโve sent this clip to friends and my therapist because it helped me get out of an existential spiral i was in ๐ญ

Popping back in to kick a hornetโs nest ๐ My novels will not be submitted for the Womenโs Prize. Their origin story is that men were excluding them w/the Booker, so when FRESHWATER was longlisted, I hoped it was a sign that they gave thought to who *they* were excluding.
A note on Freshwaterโit is *not* a book about nonbinary/trans identity through an Igbo lens, ffs. It is not about gender whatsoever and framing it as that is trying to force it over to a human/Western center. It is about embodiment as an ogbanje.
Laverne Cox went on IG Live to talk about a transphobic attack she and a friend just experienced ๐ So much of what she had to say broke my heart because itโs simply...true.
โItโs not safe in the world [...] itโs not safe if youโre a trans person.โ ๐
Look, there are so many times Iโve woken up from nightmares or had to pull myself out of flashbacks by saying the same exact thing of โIโm safe, Iโm in my home now, everythingโs okay.โ And thereโs still so much grief because so many of us *canโt* say that.
my eighth (8!) book LITTLE ROT now has the chaotic cover it deserves! ๐๐พโจ coming june 18 from
@riverheadbooks
, LITTLE ROT is an absolutely unhinged story set in the underbelly of a nigerian city ๐ณ๐ฌ๐ฅ canโt wait for you all to read it ๐ฅฐ

This is not the first time CNA has dismissed people's condemnation of transphobia as 'noise'โwhen you people ignored her transphobia to platform her in SA a few years back, she said the same thing because she gives no fucks about trans people or harming us.
When she first made her transphobia public, I speak for those of us who genuinely loved and looked up to her, that shit broke our hearts. Me, I had graduated from her workshop + published a whole piece about it, I actually developed my nonfiction voice there.
This was her. Two days after Freshwater debuted, she asked that her name be removed from my bio everywhere because of my tweets online. Most were about her transphobia.
The year FW debuted, I lost the support of a prominent writer because of my tweets about them. I'm okay with that because they were being transphobic. Like, by all means, let us not align. Take your ring away. None of this is by force.
in enormous news, i wrote the foreword for the new collectorโs edition of octavia butlerโs PARABLE OF THE TALENTS ๐๐พโค๏ธโ๐ฅ
๐โจ out 12/9 from
@hachettebooks
, order here:
I was also anxious as hell because speaking against her publicly, even just by retweeting content, was a THING. But there was no other option, we have to stand by trans women, period.
This thread doesn't really have a point, other than my God, it's been years and it still hurts that she's transphobic. We were rooting so hard for her. So many people gently tried to educate her. So much grace was extended, and she went to loudly align with You-Know-Who.
PS: I run a Patreon where 100% of the income goes directly to Black trans people in need. I post only a few times a month but you get insider gist, writing tips, early cover reveals, etc. for as little as $1 a month ๐ฅฐ Please share + retweet! ๐๐พ๐ฟ
Also, yes, this means I have 3 books coming out in 2022, all in separate genres. Thatโs why Iโm in editing hell this year.
BITTER (YA, 2.15.2022)
CONTENT WARNING: EVERYTHING (Poetry, Spring 2022)
YOU MADE A FOOL OF DEATH WITH YOUR BEAUTY (Romance, Summer 2022)
Forget about meโI donโt want this prizeโbut anyone who uses this kind of language does not fuck with trans women either, so when they say itโs for women, they mean cis women.
And yes, this does mean that them longlisting FW was transphobic.

She edited and wrote an introduction to my work and I was over the moon. I couldn't wait for her to read Freshwater. When she said those things and then doubled down and then mocked those of us who called her out (she called the response "trans-noise"), I was gutted.
Publication day lewks! โจ๐ธ๐ถ Mehn, I canโt believe

As for CNA and that white woman, at this point, anyone who supports them knowing their views is also openly supporting transphobia. There is no justifying it. Kill your idols.
Okay, all done! Updated my profile picture so new followers can gaze into my eyes and perhaps feel moved to check out a book or two ๐ฅฐ Take care of the folks around you, please, and stay safe out there. We all we got. โ๐พ๐โก๏ธ
To now know that people will happily throw trans people under the bus rather than hold her accountable for her views? To be reminded that for so many people, CNA is untouchable and trans people are not worth deplatforming her? ๐
I do want to say that this is also an intracommunity thing. CNA means something very specific to young Nigerian writers, especially those who were in her workshop. It is layered and heavy on the heart because the way we LOVED her???
As a kid, if you told me that my favorite author would turn out to be a violent bigot and that my own books would be getting recommended as an alternative to hers, I wouldโve laughed in your face. But here we are, Dark Lady and all. Much disappoint.
I havenโt even been on Twitter but the ripples of the transphobic violence spearheaded by You-Know-Who are still being felt. The force of her hatred for people who are minding their business and trying not to get murdered is really something, but we can be loud too.
And if there's one thing I will never forget from when I disclosed I wasn't a woman in 2018, it's the realization that many Black cis women are only in solidarity with you if they think you're one of them.
i have so many stories in me i literally do not think a lifetime will be enough to get them all out ๐ฉ i dream stories, i wake up in them, i'm a story being haunted by a legion of other stories ๐ญ
Itโs fine for me not to be eligible because Iโm not a woman! But you not about to be out here on some โsex as defined by lawโ like thatโs not a weapon used against trans women.
I just picked up my monthly inhaler prescription for over $200, and the pharmacist couldnโt find a single discount coupon to help. She shook her head as she checked me out and said, โThis donโt make no sense to breathe.โ
Big facts.
If anything, take heart and know that your chi is very much awake, no matter who you're facing down or their perceived power. I am fucking honored to be writing books for Black queer and trans people. We are impossible things cracking the world open.
Sigh. Yโall. โLegally defined as a womanโ is transphobic in โจmultipleโจ directions. An institution adhering to transphobic law, is still, unfortunately, transphobic.
basically that stories are real, like this impossible romantic one โก๏ธ remembering that i am an impossible thing who is impossibly alive doing impossible things through God, who can make any story come true โก๏ธ we can hope for what feels impossible, because it isnโt!

! ๐คฏ๐๐พ๐ฅ Iโm still in bed, bonnet and all, awake only because Gรผs tried to break into my bedroom an hour ago, but itโs dawning on me that I have now officially published three books in three years. Holy shit.
โI know nothing will happen to [CNA] because this world and the publishing industry value her more than the lives or wellbeing of trans people, which is something she knows as well.โ
๐ธ
If you think pushing back against transphobia from powerful people and institutions is a ploy for social media attention, your time would be better spent just admitting that you hate trans people and going.
I was okay with it because tbh, I agreed that my connection to her shouldn't be used to sell my work. We do not stand for the same things. I didn't and still don't want her name on my books.
Anyway, just stating all this because the virulent transphobia in the UK literary world is annoying me. I did make an awesome post on IG the other day telling transphobes to die mad and honestly? Constant mood. 13/10 would recommend. Bye! ๐โ๐พ
There are so many communities I used to be a part of and got pushed out of simply for existing truthfully as myself, for seeing and pointing at true things, where staying would have meant violence. The costs, the losses, and a world that consistently supports those who harm us.
Injecting some wholesome content into your timelineโtoday I made carrot soup with carrots from my garden! And some peanut butter. It was amazing and Iโm gonna do it again with the purple carrots soon.
THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI explores what it means for a family to lose a child they never really knew. Read more about

If your style guide doesn't respect people's pronouns, then your style guide is <insert drumroll here> transphobic! Gasp. Stop being so precious about your shit and catch up to the actual world you're publishing in.
At this point, Iโm blocking any and everyone who misgenders me. Most of them actually follow me and tag me in it, which Iโll assume means youโre just being deliberately malicious ๐
If anyone needs to hear thisโit's okay to be okay right now, especially if you've been fighting for years to stay alive. You don't have to poke holes in your recovery because you feel you should be suffering more out of solidarity. Stay okay to help those who aren't.
I mean, to be fair, we are talking about a woman who aligns with war criminals, so I suppose it all tracks. But also, even her transphobia is so much bigger than her. There's that reminder that Black cis women will continue to uplift her at the expense of trans people.
A few people have suggested that I write a home/garden book, which Iโm interested in, but it also seems soโฆvast?? Iโm thinking about it, though, and wanted to knowโwhat would yโall be interested in reading about? ๐๐พ๐ฟ๐

We are truly all we got. I'm very proud of debut me for standing by my beliefs, because the anxiety of knowing you've pissed off CNA right in your publication week?? BRUH. You're there calculating if the loss of her support will tank your career. Over common tweets. LMFAO.

Man, so a lot of authors are isolated and scared and worried about their careers right now. Doing this work often feels precarious on a good day, let alone now. I wanted to offer some reassurance along a particular front, and I hope it's useful to someone out there.
