Is there any evidence that Xi (and broader leadership) see this as a way to paint the West as a convenient bogeyman while they overpower vested interests and execute painful reforms?

Well it’s like two guys playing high stakes poker. You want to see if the other guy will fold, even if neither side has particularly strong hands

Hi Victor, thanks for the thoughts, esp regarding reduced audience costs for Xi. Ego was a key factor (obviously) and this deserves more thinking on my part

The analogy with the IMF's surveillance with rewriting Chinese law, IMHO, doesn't fly. They could just ignore IMF report or as Stiglitz said to throw it in the trash bin.

Great interview. Although, pace your great expertise I'd beg to differ your framing of the Chinese muslims issue. Indeed, Terrorism might be one of the reasons that's led that crackdown but truthfully it's about forcibly erasing the religion and culture of an entire ethnic group.

You’ve gone to war with China when you should be improving trade and easing the burden on US companies and giving the stock market a boost. Instead it’s fear and chaos
