It's me in this picture.
I'm a Ukrainian writer. I have portraits of great Ukrainian poets on my bag. I look like I should be taking pictures of books, art, and my little son. But I document Russia's war crimes and listen to the sound of shelling, not poems. Why?

I just realized that not everyone on Twitter knows that the USSR invaded Poland in 1939, acting in collaboration with Nazi Germany. Hitler and Stalin started WWII as allies.
During the Soviet occupation of my hometown Lviv in 1939-1941 thousands were arrested and murdered.
When I hear "I give you Leopards only if they give you Abrams", I get scared. Not because I'm Ukrainian, but because sometimes it seems Ukrainians are the only adults in the room. And to be honest, we're not ready to save the world both from Russia and this kindergarten politics.
This letter โZโ on the dogโs nose brought tears into my eyes today. The dogโs name is Zhulik; he licked my hand. He was scared after occupation, but he trusts people again.
But why, Russians? Because you can?
When Russian leaders will be in jail, it will be for Zhulikโs pain too.
I wish you all could understand Ukrainian and so appreciate this unique tenderness, hardly translatable to any other language I know, when the local women call Ukrainian soldiers "our boys", "khlopchyky" and ask permission to hug them.

Russians injured 6 kids yesterday near Kyiv. The youngest one is a 5-year-old girl. How is it to see our kids dead, injured, without limbs, without parents, stolen & "adopted" by ๐ท๐บ in front of TV cameras? I'm numb by now & the worst thing is: as I hug my son, I'm now frozen too.

Crimean Tatar Reshat Ametov became one of the first victims of the Russian war against Ukraine.
