Creating an FPS? It's a good idea to render the weapon on a secondary camera, that way you can lower the FOV and it'll never clip through walls! Need weapons? I got pretty cool stylized blasters here: (public domain, free to use)

Don't sleep on the particle system for effects! This smoke was done by giving each particle a trail (don’t forget color gradient and noise parameters), then giving the particles low opacity for a 'free' glow effect. Simple and fits lots of visual styles!
