Absolutely. I try my best to only shoot artists I care about for this very reason. I want the viewer to feel the passion through my lens. ❤️
@toddowyoung
Exactly! I got to cover Madison Beer’s tour in 2021, and since I attended shows before covering her, I knew where she would be for the first three songs.
@toddowyoung
THANK YOU .....though even some of the artists and their managers think it's a weakness. How do we get pass that to do some ACTUAL work???
@toddowyoung
i really appreciate this because i’m a fan of a lot of the artists i photograph and sometimes i feel like i get taken less seriously for it !!! but honestly i feel like it makes my pics look cooler when i’m a fan
@toddowyoung
We performers work to create "moments" in our set - sometimes those are spontaneous, sometimes they're planned. In both cases, familiarity with the band and how they perform helps prepare for those moments so you can capture the magic when it happens. Fans make the best photogs.
@toddowyoung
Got the usual "3 song" limit & was being escorted up the stairs & out of the seating bowl during an song I knew.
JUST before I knew where a lighting cue would *likely* be I spun around at the concourse and grabbed this photo.
Had I not known the band, I would have missed it.
@toddowyoung
I work hard when I’m photographing a show but I’m down there dancing (ish) and singing along! Sure, it’s work but you need to have fun while working or it gets old fast :)!
@toddowyoung
I feel sometimes when I'm shooting an artist I'm a fan of it's easier because I know the songs and general vibe
I had no shame in the photo pit during PUPs set and was singing along whole getting shots
(Also it helped me focus some while squeezing past security and crowd surfers)
@toddowyoung
exactly !! it's knowing what is going on during the concert and where to be. it's knowing the fans and what they want, catching the artists through the fans' eyes. it's knowing the artist's aesthetic/brand. it's being passionate about the music you're photographing live.
