At The Rover, we believe journalism is worth fighting for. Whether we're in Ukraine or on the picket line, in a homeless shelter or the National Assembly, we fight to tell stories that matter.

Her name was Barbara Kentner. She was 34. She was a mother. She was someone’s child. She was Ojibway. She was killed because a white man threw a trailer hitch at her from a truck as she walked along the road in Thunder Bay. Her name was Barbara Kentner.
1. When
@NoLore
said that the our collective reaction to the Humbolt tragedy had a lot to do with the fact that the victims were white hockey players, she wasn’t trying to denigrate them. She was speaking of our comparative indifference toward Indigenous suffering.
Big news: Award-winning journalist Christopher Curtis has quit his job with Postmedia to launch a groundbreaking new journalism project with Ricochet. Read his op-ed on why he left The Gazette, and the kind of journalism he wants to do now.

Note to the premier, stop blaming Quebecers for your mismanagement of the pandemic. It isn’t being outdoors while the sun is still out that’s driving transmission. It’s gyms, schools, workplaces. All decisions you took.
As 1 million Palestinian children are on the brink of starvation, I would merely (respectfully) ask: who gives a fuck what Anthony Housefather thinks and whether he chooses to continue collecting a six figure salary as a Liberal or an independent?
"I think it's the first time in my parliamentary career that I've had a reflection like this where I truly felt, last night, that a line had been crossed," Liberal MP Anthony Housefather says when asked re: his future with party after passage of Israel-Hamas war motion.

If you can’t bring yourself to use the words ‘systemic racism’ when two nurses tell an Indigenous woman she’s garbage, promiscuous and a drain on the state and it’s all right there on film AND the woman dies shortly after the encounter, maybe you’re part of the problem.
Denis Coderre wanting to ban alcohol in parks after 8 p.m. empowers police to arrest the poor, the homeless and those without the luxury of having a yard or balcony. It is a move to comfort those who live in glass towers.
Residential schools shouldn’t be up for debate. They were about white supremacy. They were about erasing nations, their languages, their connection to the land. Because our ancestors wanted that land, and got it, we find ways to rationalize genocide. This isn’t debate club.
Pay attention to the critiques of New York Times' visit to Nunavut. Piece provides little historic or political context for poverty/death, uses the phrase "fume-sniffing teenagers," inadvertently helps stereotypes about Inuit. Lots to unpack.
The Qc government calling a press conference on a Sunday morning to announce that we’re not in the midst of a sixth wave seems like a sure sign we’re in the midst of a sixth wave.
Lost my grandfather today. Was lucky to have him for as long as I did, lucky nothing was left unsaid and lucky that some small part of such a great, just, humble man lives on his grandkids and great grand children. Here he is with his great grand babies

. “If this is what we see when the camera is on, imagine everything we don’t see.” A lot of sadness, frustration with the gov’s refusal to acknowledge systemic racism.
Nothing will ever prepare you to see children fleeing their country on a cold winter night, clutching their parents hands, clearly confused, some with teddy bears and dolls. Flooring. 🇺🇦
1. The Mohawks in Kanesatake shut down their community to the outside world, disrupting their own economy to show solidarity with the people of Tyendinaga arrested in today's OPP raid.
People left school, left their jobs, put their lives on hold to mount a resistance.
Imagine being picked up by police, thrown into the back of a squad car and driven miles outside of town. They cut you loose and force you to walk home. It's called a Starlight Tour and it's what I'm working on in Val-d'Or.
2. A few years later, we learn of a clear act of genocide against Indigenous — something akin to a war crime — and the hockey world is silent. Nora received death threats for what she said. She was right.
Coming across tourists in Montreal is the most stressful experience. They ask you for a recommendation and you’re desperately trying to think of the coolest most Montreal thing but your brain breaks and you end up sending them to PeelPub.
The joy of waking up in your own bed, next to the woman you love and then hearing this one coooooooing the start of a new day. Complicated feelings, being back from Ukraine but sipping coffee and listening to music with Wenzie is something I dearly missed.
1. Our baby has been experiencing what look like short brain seizures and one episode that seemed to last an entire morning (on and off).
Took her to Hôpital Ste-Justine yesterday so they could try to get a handle on what’s up. They need to run more tests.
Ça me fait sourire.
One of the best parts about living in Quebec is that we can drop our kids off at a daycare in the morning because it's affordable and the workers care for those babies as if they were their own. For someone to bring violence to such a place is unconscionable to me.
Islamophobia goes unchallenged far too often in Canada: we see it in our newspaper columns, our politicians and even within our own families. Today four people were killed because they were Muslim. It is unacceptable and we need to demand better of ourselves as Canadians.
Mohawk source: the protest camp at Kahnawake has a kitchen tent, a bonfire, a propane stove and a fish smoker. There are children running around and families holding it down.
* No AK47s or weapons of any kind
* People are "pretty chill"
* Community is united
This may be the first debate in North American history where the moderator insisted on getting a candidate to say n***er and I find that so profoundly disgusting.

When the premier or QC says not all cultures are equal, I’d be curious to know which cultures are supreme, who gets to rank said cultures and whether those supreme cultures are white. Anyhow, the guy ran a discount airline so he must know what he’s doing.
Don't forget that this campaign started with Legault associating immigration with extremism and chicanerie. Now the premier says 50,000 immigrants a year would be "suicidal" for QC. There is no misunderstanding here, no quotes taken out of context, this is how they see the world.
🧵Montreal police want to charge a journalist with criminal mischief for covering a pro-Palestinian sit at a downtown bank. The odds of them convicting a journalist for doing journalism are slim. So why bother charging her?
"Intimidation" says the

Is it just me or does it seem borderline insulting to their own voters that the CAQ would just fork over $7 million of our money to pay for two meaningless preseason games in Quebec City while the government shortchanges nurses, teachers, transit workers and food banks?
Earlier this month, a CAQ minister blamed the rise in cases on a handful of refugee claimants. Suffice it to say, when you’re scapegoating refugees, I don’t think you have the crisis under control. Fier.
Montreal during Grand Prix weekend is like the city applied a military-dose of Axe Body Spray spiked with cocaine, alligator meth, qualuudes and the soul of a club promoter — dressed in a white suit with no shirt — who uses club as both a noun and a verb.
Marc Bergevin is doing his Stanley Cup media day conference right now and non of the French questions or answers are being translated to English. That’s an error by the NHL and the Canadiens.
1. Any doubt I had about coming to Ukraine went up in smoke when I saw this child’s face. She is maybe five or six years old. I know this because when she smiled she had no front teeth. It was a great big smile. Coming over from Poland was an ordeal.
I love this question. Should Indigenous languages be included in Canada’s official languages?
YFB: yes.
Trudeau: I named a GG who speaks English and Inuktitut. Doesn’t answer.
Singh: Yes.
Paul: Yes.
O’Toole: says Migweetch instead of nia:wen to a Mohawk.
RADICAL IDEA: if you’re a white playwright whose closest connection to an Indigenous community was watching The Last of the Mohicans, maybe you don’t get to tell the story of Residential Schools to an all-white audience with a mostly white cast.
Denis Coderre depicting Montreal as a lawless, violent place is perhaps the most unforgivable sin of this campaign. Not only is it a vast oversimplification that isn’t borne out by any serious data, it’s also a dog whistle aimed at Montreal’s Black neighbourhoods. Shameful.
So if you’re a CBC reporter you can’t sign a petition but if you’re Peter Mansbridge you can officiate the wedding of a the Liberal party’s head of communications. Cool, got it.
RCMP, when Indigenous people occupy their traditional territory: GET YOUR GUNS, BOYZ.
RCMP, when a white guy runs into Indigenous people with his truck: WeLL yOu sEe tHiS gEntLeMan wAs iN a rUsH aNd hE diD a OOPSIE DOOPSY
@LeDroitca
It’s a day off. How can you be against a day off? Even people who hate Indigenous folk like days off. The province shuts down for two weeks in July because construction workers need a break. We can’t honour First People for 1 day?
At the risk of an overshare, I am so unbelievably in love with my partner. It took like 39 tries to get these photos because she makes funny faces but Marie-Pier is just stunning. And I imagine women struggle with being pigeonholed as “mom” after giving birth but she’s my love.
Dennis Coderre consulting for a development firm and then running on a promise to allow developers to build taller buildings in Montreal is some real on brand Tremblay-era politics. Even worse, he tried to hide it. Big ups to
@LP_LaPresse
for uncovering this.
Met up with someone for a story in Montréal Nord and he brought me this lovely platter of Haitian food. Always blown away by the hospitality and kindness of our Haitian-Canadian brothers and sisters. 🇭🇹
One of the more upsetting you parts of the anti vaccination/anti lockdown/pro death movement is learning how many people you grew up with, shared your childhood years with, broke bread with are willing to place individual desires over collective good.
Bonne St-Jean! ⚜️
I’m in the middle of a mental health crisis. My partner suffered a debilitating back injury last month, the stress of being the main childcare provider and running a business that’s under attack from Meta have done a real number on me. I’m not myself and for that I apologize.
Today, the son of a Prime Minister who is now Prime Minister will ask the representative of the representative of God if he can no longer be Prime Minister so that he can try to become Prime Minister again (but with more power) in six weeks. I’m dizzy.
Can't say how touched I am but everyone's support. Friends, family but also Twitter pals I've never met in real life. Just want you guys to know I'll work hard to reward the trust you've placed in me. So excited.
Being polite isn’t a substitute for treating people equitably. If you draft laws that bar Muslim women from access to employment, you don’t get to just show up at a vigil and expect to be treated like royalty.
No one walks into the debate over language in Quebec unscathed. Francos, anglos and allophones all know what it's like to feel unwanted or unwelcome in their own home. Multiply that by 1,000 for Indigenous people. I don't know if I have it in me to write about this anymore.
