Well this map is wrong. I've lived in Washington for decades and its full of Safeways and I went there all the time. Alabama has no safeways, it has publix and kroger.

Safeway is just part of a major congomerate of supermarkets. They are one & the same- Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen, Carrs, Kings Food Markets, and Balducci's Food Lovers Market.

I only knew of one Safeway in central Florida & it closed. Neighborhood Walmart, Aldi, Publix & Winn Dixie dominate the area.

I'm PNW and I thought all the Albertson's shutdown. We have a lot of Safeway. I don't think this map is accurate.

Safeway was a major grocery in Oregon. (back in the day) I never heard of Krogers (Smiths) until I moved to Las Vegas.
