@ByYourLogic @protestantwind Yeah, and I don’t like seeing “Go to therapy dummy” treated as a meme by people with relative wealth and privilege (even just having some job that provides insurance counts here). Like it’s just so accessible and cheap that you’re an idiot for not having taken advantage of it yet

@protestantwind this caused us to get to a place where we talk about how it’s super important to accept mental illness, but also that mental illnesses all have uniform symptoms and none of them result in antisocial behavior. that comes from being a bad person

@ByYourLogic @protestantwind This mentally ill person who I’m highly invested in canceling online said something problematic during a psychotic episode. I’ve got my own demons to battle (camera pans over to half empty bottle of Lexapro), but I’d NEVER do something like that

@ghost_tropic_ @protestantwind yes exactly. “mental health awareness” always meant a very narrow type of depression/anxiety/ADHD. there’s also been this broad gesture towards therapy, which I find incredibly irresponsible. if you talk about therapy like it always “makes you better” (read: better person)—

@ghost_tropic_ @protestantwind people will spend hundreds of dollars a month they don’t have and think they’re moral failures if nothing changes. some therapists work amazingly well for some, and don’t for others. very few people have the time and money to shop around. the way we talk about all this is awful

@ByYourLogic @protestantwind Right, and there’s hardly any resources available for the more serious illnesses, like group homes and treatment centers that aren’t for addiction. I’ve tried to find them and they really aren’t there. I’m lucky to have family help me survive but what about the ones who don’t

@ghost_tropic_ @protestantwind the institutional infrastructure for that stuff is so rotted out unless you’re very very rich. it just sickens me to see celebrities with unfathomable resources telling regular Americans how they “owe it to themselves!” we’d need to nationalize so many things to get anywhere

@ghost_tropic_ @ByYourLogic @protestantwind Also annoying seeing therapy painted as a panacea. There needs to be constant, conscious effort to change the way you see and live life, going to therapy and taking an antidepressant very often isn't enough.
