OMG I ORDERED THE WRONG BOOK CAKE FOR MYSELF. 😭 I sent the baker an example photo of a book cake and said I’d send a high res img of my cover later and then I just...forgot. WOW WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAKE OF NOT MY BOOK 😭😂😭😂
Years ago, one of my books was rejected for being "too foreign" because it was set in Indonesia. Today, I get to announce that my latest YA, set in Indonesia, sold in a preempt hours after it went out. Don't ever let anyone tell you that your books do not belong. 😭🙌
My dad: Remember when I told you to quit writing because none of ur books were selling? I’m glad u didn’t listen.
I’m glad too because HI HELLO HIII I HAVE A MOVIE DEAL WITH NETFLIX, BOOM!🔥🔥🔥😭🤯💥💥
I dunno what that “boom” was sorry I’m too excited
I have a surprise book! VERA WONG’S UNSOLICITED ADVICE FOR MURDERERS is KNIVES OUT x KIM’S CONVENIENCE. When Vera finds a dead body in her tea shop, she takes it upon herself to solve the murder. After all, no one sniffs out wrongdoings better than a suspicious Chinese mother. 👵
Not long ago, I broke down because I had written 8 books & failed to sell any. Then in the space of one year, I sold THREE. Today, I get to announce my third book deal. This was book 7, rejected & rewritten countless times. 🙌THE JOURNEY ONLY ENDS WHEN YOU STOP FIGHTING🙌
How I wrote over 40K words in 72 hrs! 🧵
A lot of you asked how, and now that I’ve done it twice, I def have some tips and tricks to share:
First things first: This is not the time to switch up how you write. If you’re someone who likes to take their time making sure every
My mom: Why publishers don’t want to buy more than 2 books from you at a time?
Me: It’s just rly rare unless it’s a fantasy trilogy or something, Ma.
Mom: *Disappointment Intensifies*
Me: It’s just how publishing is!!!😫😫
@BerkleyPub
: Hold my beer.
Last night, while talking to my therapist, I glanced at the clock and said, "Sorry! I didn't realize we went over the time." She said, "It's fine, I knew, but I was just FASCINATED by publishing. What other industry works like this???" 🥲
Behold, the astounding cover for WELL, THAT WAS UNEXPECTED! It means everything to finally have a novel set in Indonesia. Yrs ago, I subbed a book set in Indo and editors said it was "too foreign" for US readers. Now, let me share with you every wonder my country has to offer.
I told my friend that I have like forty author copies of my book and to let me know if anyone she knows wants a copy and she looked at me with pity and said, "You don't have forty friends?" WHAT?! DOES ANYONE HAVE FORTY FRIENDS THAT SEEMS LIKE A VERY HIGH NUMBER HELPPPP
📢 NEVER. EVER. GIVE. UP!🙌
This was my NINTH book. It took 8 before 1 sold, but every book has taught me a little more about writing, and I would not change a single thing about my journey.
WORLD, GET READY TO MEET MY BONKERS MEDDLESOME AUNTIES!!
DIAL A FOR AUNTIES IS OUT TODAAAY!!! Thank you so much to everyone for your incredible support!! My heart is bursting with gratitude and joy. 🥰

Thread abt critiquing:
I used to pride myself on having thick skin. I'd tell my readers that I wanted "brutal honesty", and I could take all the punches they threw my way. That was me the first...four to five years or so of my writing journey, and hey, that's great! But as the
I’m just sitting here laugh-crying and going, “Goddamn that is one hell of a gorgeous cake of NOT MY BOOK.” 🥲 At least we get a beautiful cake of

I am so unbelievably, incandescently happy to share the cover of THEO TAN AND THE FOX SPIRIT!!! Everything abt it is just PERFECT, down to the fox’s two tails! 😭❤️ The artist is
@rowatree
! I can’t even describe how it feels to see this cover. THEO was such a pivotal book…
My dad told me abt this Indonesian girl who won an international math competition. “So many Indonesians are excelling at an international level.” I tensed, bc usually this wld end with a look of disappointment at me. But then he looked at me & said, “And one of them is you.” 😭🥺
THIRD UPDATE: IT’S HEEEERE!!!! ...and it’s the wrong size. I just 🥲🥲🥲
But you know what, it’s OKAAAY I can live with this 😅 I’ll take more pics in the daytime.
MY MOM IS READING MY BOOK 😭 English is her THIRD language, so she understands only 70% of it and I just!! The amount of effort she makes 😭❤️ I don’t deserve her.
I am so honored to share the cover of FOUR AUNTIES AND A WEDDING, the sequel to DIAL A FOR AUNTIES on
@BookRiot
. Just fyi, my mom is already plotting how to recreate it. I told her it’s not happening, but she’s alrdy prepped a purple dress… 😂🤪
UPDATE: I called the baker all sad and she laughed for about a full minute (because clearly LIKE ALL OF YOU she is a sadist) and then said she’ll send over an edible print of the correct cover. So YAAAAY!!!
Ok I have worked too hard and had too many doors slammed in my face to not FLEX 😆So pls bear with me...
9 years before I sold a single book, and in that time...
8 books written
6 books dead on sub
4 agents before I found the right fit
Then in the space of 1.5 yrs...
COVER REVEAL! As if this week weren’t exciting enough, I finally get to reveal this gorgeous cover for my upcoming YA romcom! What happens when a gamer girl who’s been pretending to be a guy online realizes her online best friend (and total cinnamon roll) goes to her school?
Your work matters, whether or not it sells. Whether or not it finds a home, you have labored. You have poured your time and effort into something. You have sacrificed for it. It still counts as labor, whether or not capitalism places a value on it.
Behold the GLORIOUS cover of my next YA Suspense, THE NEW GIRL!!! 😍😭 That gorgeous TEAL! The hidden knife!! THE NEW GIRL was the 3rd book I ever wrote. It got me an agent relationship so toxic I found it impossible to write anything new for a whole year.
Years ago, I was made fun of for mispronouncing ELLE magazine. (I had called it “el-lay”.) Today, MY BOOK COVER IS UP ON ELLE and I think this means my life has come full circle. 😭🥳🤯😍❤️ (Also this feels like the best way to do revenge??)
Lol at the publisher who rly said with her whole chest “can you set this in an alt world that is LIKE Indonesia” bc she thought the real Indonesia wld be too “foreign” US readers 💀😂😘
Happy book birthday to this gorgeous little book baby!! I have so many feelings about this one that I've actually had to detach myself a little bit because if I were to stop and think about what this book means to me, I would just burst into tears.
No one asked for it, but here's my best advice to preserve you mental health during debut year!
1. Accept that you're going to feel like a massive fraud. Or maybe you're not? If you're one of those well-adjusted people with a healthy self-esteem, you can skip this one, lol. But
SECOND UPDATE: She said the delivery guy is here but there’s no one outside and GUYS SHE SENT IT TO THE WRONG HOUSE. I swear this cake doesn’t want to be made right 🥲
And here is the cover in its full glory! My 2yo saw the cover, went straight to this pic of me, and said, “It’s Mama!!!” 😂 Fortunately, I did not have any mafia at my wedding. 🤪

In college, a prof named Duke was reading out the roster. When he came to my name he said, “Um...I’m not even gonna try.” My friend, a white guy, called out, “It’s pronounced exactly how it’s spelled, is that too hard for you, Doo-kay?”
I think abt that moment a lot.
Okay Twitter. Tell me your WORST BREAKUP STORY.
Mine: The guy I broke up with had an asthma attack. I had to call 4 an ambulance. I went with him & held his hand. The paramedics asked what triggered it. The look they gave me when I told them...
Hey all! Here's what I've learned from my debut year + debut week + debut day. Hope some of you might find this helpful! How to survive...debut year:
1. Make a list of things you have achieved! It's totally normal to have moving goalposts. My goal used to be: Get an agent.
When my kid feels sad, she says: "Mama, I feel like a dumpling with no filling."
After I give her a giant hug, she says: "And now I have lots of filling! I am a whole dumpling!"
This kid. 🥰
I am 😭😭😭 at the words “Bestselling author of The Obsession.” The Obsession was on sub for ages, rejected by every editor except one. It is now Sourcebooks’s biggest paperback release for Walmart EVER. So those of you languishing on sub…don’t give up!
The last time I did a writing retreat, my record was 17,657 words written in a day. Now, I am at 17,454 words written and it's only 9pm. GONNA SHATTER THIS RECORD IN A BIT.
How to Outline a Novel: A Thread.
(You don’t need to, and many awesome writers don’t! This is just one of many ways to write a book.)
I used to be a pantser, and I loved it and it was chaotic in the most glorious way. But over the years, I moved more towards outlining because
I checked myself into a hotel today and for the next two to three days I will be attempting to write 10K a day. I'm at 4K today...let's see if this kills me. I'll update my progress on this thread. If you're writing as well, reply here with your word count updates!
2022 review!
In 2022, I...
-Published 4 books.
-Wrote 3.5 books. (The 0.5 was a rewrite.)
-Edited 5 books.
-Sold 1 more TV option. (Which makes 3 options total...DearUniverseWhenWillIBeAbleToAnnounceThem.)
-Traveled to Hawaii, Bali, Singapore, and Los Angeles.
By the time most writers get published, we’ve gotten so good at expecting rejections that we often forget to celebrate the moments in between huge milestones.
Me, showing my mom the AMAZING cover of my upcoming YA thriller.
Mom: “Why is it so scary? There’s blood on it.”
Me: “It’s a thriller.”
Mom: “Can’t they make it look happier?”
Me: “IT’S A THRILLER.”
Mom: “Ppl want books that make them happy, why you write this sort—
Me: “OK NVM”
I can finally share the gorgeous cover of I’M NOT DONE WITH YOU YET, my f*cked up book abt women behaving badly! This one consumed my soul in a fevered dream and I am *dying* to share it with all of you.
Preorder:
So something happened today which I want to remember forever. I was out celebrating the upcoming launch of Dial A For Aunties when a young couple came up to me and asked if I was Jesse. I said yes, thinking they were abt to ask me to move my car 😂, but they SCREAMED and
Oh my god, my hands are shaking and I feel lightheaded. Dial A For Aunties has an orange banner in such a huge category!! 😭 Thank you so much to everyone who has preordered this baby. No. 1 AND 3 in Humorous American Lit WTAF! 🤯
Abt 16 yrs ago, I had the biggest crush on a guy. His mom was the sweetest lady. Anyway, we kind of lost touch and haven’t spoken in years, but he just messaged to tell me that his mom bought my book and has been boasting to everyone abt it 🥺🥺🥺 MY HEART ❤️ IT IS BURSTING❤️❤️❤️
Brb screaming at “National Bestselling Author” under my name 😭😭😭 And yes! This is on the temporary cover of the sequel to Dial A For Aunties! Which will be out March 29th, 2022! 🥰❤️
I AM SO EXCITED TO SHARE WITH YOU THE STUPENDOUS COVER FOR THEO TAN AND THE IRON FAN!!!
Theo Tan and the Iron Fan is the sequel to Theo Tan and the Fox Spirit, the final installment in this duology. If you've read my posts about the first Theo Tan book, you'll know that it was
Reminder that sometimes, it’s better to NOT succeed with your first book, or even your second book. I wrote 8 books before selling 1, and I wouldn’t change a thing because I learned so much from each book. Now I’m like, “Deadlines? Pssh, I hand in everything with months to spare”
😭 I can finally share this with the world! I have a two-book deal!! It took eight books for me to get here, but I wouldn’t change a thing abt my journey. Thank you so much to
@UweStenderPhD
for all your hard work, and thank you
@EditorALB
for believing in the book!
Checked into my fav hotel, changed into my PJs, and have written 8.6K so far today. Hoping to hit 10K by the end of the night, but am happy with the progress so far!
In 2021, I:
-Released 2 books
-Wrote 3 books
-Sold 5 books
-Sold 1 TV option (which I can’t wait to scream abt!)
-Gave up on 1 half-written MS
-Read dozens of messages from readers
It has been a year, and I can’t wait to see what 2022 brings! 🥰
How to approach feedback! 🧵
1. Always thank them first & foremost! Even if I find the feedback super harsh, I still thank them for their time and effort. Do NOT argue or try to explain even if you feel like they got something “wrong.” It’s not their job to get what you were
Past me would've said: The pacing of the 2nd half of the MS is rushed.
But present me would say: I loved the pacing in the first half and the amount of build-up and detail you put in! I would love to see more of that in the second half. Slow down and give us more visuals.
a painful critique, it's very legit to put it aside for the sake of your own mental health. You can develop thick skin through gentle critique; thick skin is about persevering through rejections, not about learning to swallow cruelty from others.
Writing my 16th book and I *still* get that feeling of: “Ugh this is NOT working. The plot is floundering. The dialogue is stilted. The characters are boring. The…” I still question why anyone would read this crap. The only thing that helps is knowing I feel this way abt every
Theo Tan and the Fox Spirit is out today. This one was a particularly heartwrenching journey for me, and for most of it I didn’t think it would ever be pubbed, but here we are, and I’d like this to be a reminder that it’s ok to walk away and come back when you’re healed ❤️
How I outline my books: A Thread.
Hi folks! Instead of doing a video abt this, I decided that the topic wld be better served typed out, with screencaps to accompany it. Before we start, I want to be clear that this is far from being the only way to outline a novel, and that 1/?
Please take a moment to admire the gorgeous Brazilian cover of Well, That Was Unexpected! The amount of detail is just INCREDIBLE. They even have the gnome that George Clooney was *SUPPOSEDLY* doing...something to. 🤣

Did you know that after signing a book deal, your publisher will send you a questionnaire for their records?
When I got my first author questionnaire, I was like: Wow I suck at this. But it's ok, I'll get better at it!
Reader, I did not get better at it.
But publishing on its own is already hard enough. Why would we add to the hardship?? We should be here to encourage and support each other. Why is "brutal" honestly so glorified? Honesty comes in many forms. "Brutal" isn't necessarily the best. If you're on the receiving end of
I just went on my 3rd writing retreat * wrote 35K words in less than 72 hrs. (Not 40K this time because the book ended after 35K.) Here's what I learned from this retreat!

Here’s a joyous publishing secret: Don’t worry abt fam/friends not buying your book, bcuz the most unexpected will and it is truly the loveliest moments. My list of unexpected readers:
-My bro’s friend who I met ONCE 5 yrs ago at bro’s wedding. (My bro hasn’t even read it, lol!)
I don’t know how to say this calmly, so uh. I HAVE A FILM AGENT!! Bwaaah!! And she represents the likes of Angie Thomas and Becky Albertalli!!! 😭🎉I don’t know how I landed her. Oh that’s right, thru the best lit agent in the industry,
@katedetweiler
! ❤️🥰
Asked my 6yo the trolley problem. After a long, thoughtful pause, she said: I wld keep going & hit the 5 ppl
Me: You'd rather let 5 ppl die instead of killing 1?
Her: Yes.
Me: Why??
Her: Because after we kill them, we can take their money
I--I--WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS INFORMATION
Me: (Tells my parents amazing publishing news.)
My dad: That’s good. But you really should use your time wisely and sell more books. Learn how to write faster!
My mom: And why does it take so long to sell a book? Is it just you?
💀🤣
Congratulations to all the Goodreads Choice winners! Over 40,000 of you voted for Dial A and I cannot describe how grateful I feel right now. 😍🥰❤️Thank you. I never thought it would come SECOND!!! AAAHHHH!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Hey Twitter, what do you folks do when there is someone who seems rly nice that you want to be friends with but you also don’t wanna creep them out by sliding into their DMs out of the blue?
