In 1987, we got a flash of light from a supernova in the large magelanic cloud. About 8 months later, a ring of debris lit up, indicating a radius of 0.66 light years. The viewing angle of the ring is 0.808 arc seconds. 0.66 / tan(0.808/3600 * PI / 180) = 168484 light years.

After some soul-searching, I have come to realize that the claims I made about Edward Feser's book were ignorant, wrong, and unjustified. My clumsy attempt at an apology is attached as an image.
@CarilynJohnson
It's interesting how trans activists seem to treat trans people as if they can never lie or be mistaken or do bad things and how they can't fathom the idea of someone lying about being trans.
@SusannaLHarris
That languages evolve in large part the same way as biological evolution. Languages mutate as children learn them imperfectly, and new features are selected based on those that are more adaptive. (We also intentionally invent words, but that’s a very small contribution.)
"Hi, I'm Wendell. My mission is to make Christianity look as idiotic as possible so that more people will leave the faith. I do this as part of my financial deal with Satan. My success rate is very high so far."
I can see perhaps why someone might have a spiritual experience and decide God must exist.
But why choose Christianity? There are so many other better options.
In this day and age, I don't think people have any excuse to say things like this anymore in a serious manner. Everyone knows atheism says nothing about origins. So this person is either trolling for satyrical effect or being blatantly dishonest.
@darwintojesus
Atheists do not have this problem. On the other hand, the Torah actually has laws that permit the taking of "virgin girls" from people they've slaughtered and making them "wives."
In other words, the Bible literally endorses raping little girls.
So let me get this straight: Some people hate homosexuals because of an incorrectly translated verse in part of an ancient holy book whose rules they don't even believe they have to obey anymore?
"I believe God is omnipresent, omniscient, and other omniwhatevers because some philosophers from thousands of years ago said so. Never mind that they didn't know about heliocentrism, germs, or neuroscience."
Humans eat, fight, poop, breathe, and mate. We're not even unique in our use of language and tools. I baffle at the desire of some people to see us as completely set apart from other animals.
@GeminiTayMC
Congratulations. It looks like you graduated!
You also became a Hermit.
Next thing you gotta do is make friends with the people on SciCraft, and you'll have accomplished everything! 😁
"I'm smart enough to realize that infinite torture for finite crimes is immoral. But I'm SUPER stuck on my Christianity. So rather than ditch it entirely, I'm going to modify it in arbitrary ways to make it make sense in ways the Bible never could."
As someone with a real PhD from a real school (albeit not in theology), I approve of the work done by

and consider him to be honest and more than sufficiently intellectually capable.
How many Christian apologists does it take to change a light bulb?
Three
One to write a story about a light bulb change.
One to defend the story as historical.
One to threaten you with hell for not believing it.
In the process, no actual light bulbs get changed.
I've completely lost faith in religion as any motivation for people to admit to and own up to their moral errors. They get caught lying or cheating on their spouses or molesting children, and they toss their precious morals aside because it's inconvenient.
P1: Something I'm assuming without evidence.
P2: Another thing I'm assuming without evidence.
P3: Something sneaky that SOUNDS like a reasonable inference.
Therefore God.

As long as theists insist that atheists are actively ignoring the "obvious" call of God, "just want to sin," and other demeaning assertions, they will be unable to understand the atheist position. One of the stupidest tenets of Christianity.
So when the global prayer against atheism doesn't work, will the theists admit that prayer doesn't work or will they try to pass off the blame to someone else. Also, why isn't God powerful enough to end atheism?
P1: God is the greatest conceivable being.
P2: The mind can conceive greater things than can exist in reality.
Therefore: God can only exist in the mind.

WTF. Half an hour ago I was talking to a neighbor about electric lawn mowers. And just now for the first time YouTube gave me an ad for electric lawn mowers. Is Siri listening in on my conversations and sending info to Google?

Atheism says absolutely nothing about origins. You would need to include some other philosophy like naturalism to get there.
Are you just trolling or what?

A low GPA can indicate either poor performance or a crappy school. A high GPA can indicate either competence or a crappy school.
It irks me when apologists say that non-physical things exist but that science can't study them. If they have any affect AT ALL on the physical, then those effects can be studied and distinguished from the purely physical.
@BeatTheCult
"It's the fault of those horrible atheists. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that all of our arguments are terrible and all of our evidence is nonexistent. We're Christians. We know nothing about taking responsibility for our own failings."
@BraxHunter
If we saw it ourselves we wouldn’t deny it. But you expect us to believe these things happened based on writings from ancient people who thought the earth was flat and didn’t know germs exist. Get real.
Another Christian blocked me when I asked about the discrepancies in the Jesus birth stories between Luke and Matthew and with documented Roman history. Why is it that so many believers are afraid to critically examine their beliefs? It only makes them look like cowards.
When someone asks you if you believe in God, “Which God?” is a perfectly valid question, because everyone seems to have a different idea about what that means.
P1: Free will is a good thing.
P2: Free will is responsible for suffering in the world.
P3: There is no suffering in heaven.
Therefore: Heaven has no free will.
Therefore: Heaven is a bad place.
I prefer the academic definition of atheist: Belief that there are no gods.
I do not identify as an atheist.
I am a militant agnostic. I don't know, and 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧.
Is it possible to be totally supportive of trans people in all ways but still be unsure about how to best handle the sports thing?
(BTW, there are so few trans people in sports, the whole thing is massively overblown.)

If it were a big lie, then people wouldn't be able to use it productively in other areas, including Agriculture, Ecology, Medical research, Paleontology, Biochemistry, Artificial intelligence, finding Petroleum.
But they do.
@CaptainDadPool2
I think there's a lot of Christians who are going to avoid watching this debate, like ever, just do they can say they've never seen Christianity refuted.
We pick on the resurrection because it's God sacrificing himself to himself to make a loophole for a rule he invented.
But if we look at it as just marketing, then it makes more sense.
My kids go to a Catholic school. My daughter was doing her religion homework and said that the story of Jacob and Esau doesn't make any sense. "Why would someone give up their birthright for a bowl of soup?" I was very proud.
When I look over proofs for God, mostly what I see is a bunch of unsubstantiated guesses about what God is like. "Perfect," "immaterial," "unlimited," "ultimately simple," and other stuff. They can never explain how they KNOW any of this stuff. They just make it up!
"I posit a non-physical thing I call 'Placeholder.' Placeholder is all-powerful and can do anything. Therefore Placeholder explains everything and created everything. Case closed."
The young earth creationist who has been caught lying about scientific facts tries to tell someone to learn real science. The irony is palpable.

"Moral agents"
Morality evolves in social species.
"Harmony between the mental and physical"
The brain is physical and also simulates the world around us to make short-term predictions.
You don't have to accept evolution or the big bang, because not everyone has to be a science enthusiast. Just don't pretend like you know more than you do and spend time spreading lies about something you haven't taken the time to learn about properly.
@DarkMatter2525
I listened to too many Christian apologists and found that the best arguments for God were laden with false factual claims and logical fallacies. If I hadn't listened to Christian apologists, I might still be Christian now.

It's also been found that people with the enthusiasm, skill, and desire to learn to type on a Dvorak keyboard also type much faster than average on QWERTY. When that's factored in, Dvorak is only marginally faster.

Do you think your son's sense of gender is so weak that you think a doctor asking about his self-identity is going to suddenly make him want to become a girl?
Better not tell him about Curling or else he'll want to become Canadian all of a sudden!
@GeorgeTakei
My kids are aware that homosexual relationships exist.
This definitely hasn't caused them any harm. All they know is that this is just another part of the diversity of this world of people who should be accepted for who they are.
Theist: The universe had a definite beginning, therefore God created it.
Response1: Having a definite beginning is not evidence of God.
Response2: The latest cosmological models suggest the universe didn't have a definite beginning.
Which response do you start with?
Some people are afraid to apologize because others have used it against them.
Today, I said something stupid and then apologized. I got only positive feedback.
I feel fortunate and grateful for that.
I swear. It doesn't matter how polite I am. If I don't buy into their unsubstantiated claims, they call me a "logical positivist" or something else and block me.
