Remainers really still haven't learned that insisting things were all good while half the country was being ravaged by austerity was a significant reason why they lost the vote.
When DeSantis talks about antisemitism, just remembered he had a staffer who put together a video which ended with a 5+ second clip of a spinning Sonnenrad superimposed over his face
ppl need to realize that the only reason we are taught that Nazis are bad, is only bc Nazi Germany threatened the other empires of Europe. It was never about ideology, or protecting minorities, it was about the fact that Germany stepped out of the fold of western expectations.

I think people miss how remarkable it is that Cambridge and Oxford consistently get ranked higher than most of the Ivy Leagues despite having a fraction of the financial endowments. If Cambridge were an Ivy it would only be the 6th wealthiest.

You know these posters aren't real because the Swiss far-right would never be so "sophiscated" in their racism. Here are some real-world examples of Swiss anti-immigration posters:
Sophisticated Europeans miles ahead in their sophistication yet again. In Switzerland, a single Referendum on limiting immigration driven population growth. Slick, clean, straight to the point. No crass messaging about race, tastefully implicit. Look at these ads. Elite Politics
Well the problem with British republicanism is it tends to position itself against ceremony and expressions of nationalism. If republicanism is ever to succeed here it needs to show how it can reconcile itself with nationalism.
@Milksteak23
Not saying it did. When Remainers started insisting the status-quo worked and that Brexit would break it, the debate became one about change vs stasis. What they didn't realise was that the status-quo was intolerable for many and so they lost.
NEW Britain’s best students are studying in the States and studies show one in four are settling there too. Can families and a Brexit Britain afford to lose such talent? And are kids from schools like Eton turning their backs on Oxbridge?

@Samfr
Britain is so fucking dire man it's deeply depressing. I've come to Italy on holiday twice in the past year and each time I've been very impressed by the infrastructure and general standard of living. It was only a decade ago when Italy was the laughing stock of Western Europe.
The bill makes it a crime to desecrate objects of "particular significance to religious communities". Through complete cowardice, they've reinstated blasphemy laws.
The way enthusiasm is a cultural expectation in the US is so jarring. It's the reason why American service just is the worst in the world. Partly generated by tipping culture, but equally there seems to be this idea that being effusive is a pre-requisite for good service.
At the end of the day there is no "sophiscated" racism. You scratch a proponent of "human biodiversity" and a bogan whose mind has been rotted on cuck porn bleeds. It's all just aesthetic window dressing.
There is currently no country in the world that operates on sharia law. If one did, trust me we'd all want to move there because it would be the best place to live in on the planet 😊
I find this sentiment quite funny as if Britain didn’t colonise my grandparents’ country & then request them to come here to rebuild the economy & enlist in the army for pennies.
Revolution is brutal. If you can’t deal with that, don’t play with the word. It’s not voting for Bernie, it’s not calling some fascist congressman so his staffer can laugh at you, it’s brutal and dirty. Read Mao.
@TheGreenParty
Why don't you ever say the quiet bit out loud? Your plan to cut inflation involves making the people working on infrastructure projects redundant.
I find this attitude some academics indulge in fascinating given undergrads are actively encouraged to critique the work of academics, even if they have relatively little knowledge in that subject area. This is a key (if not *the* key) skill you're meant to learn at undergrad.
@lottelydia
“A brilliant demolition”? The article is written by a guy who received his Cambridge undergrad degree in 2022… what qualifications does he have to discuss the legacies of empire? I guess the empire apologists will next be outsourcing their reviews to A-level students.
I am convinced no one sincerely believes that the reason Palestine hates the gays is "cos of the Brits". It's a point so obtuse and unbelievably disingenuous that I think even the most stupid person would have sufficient introspection to realise it.
@OorWeePhysicist
The Greens aren't progressive as this shows. They are deeply regressive, instinctive conservatives who can't countenance positive change. And if some progressives are moronic enough to vote for them off vibes, they can't be helped.
I do think British people understand it. They just show disdain for how silly it is. Biden has both English and Anglo-Irish ancestry (as do many other Irish Americans) yet those are always conveniently forgotten about in service of a greater narrative.
I think British people don’t understand how many white Americans have a strong Irish ethic identity, even if that identity often gets reduced to kitsch—and how deep the resentment of British tyranny against our ancestors is among that group.
@FranklinVH2
Eh I think that's a reasonable assessment for why they involved themselves initially, but it definitely evolved into a more ideological conflict. The insistence on unconditional surrender was definitely beyond simply maintaining a balance of power
Pretty disgusted but can't say I am exactly surprised that the UCU just ratified this motion. (5) is especially questionable. Academics deserve better.
As noted in the Daily Mail I was entirely serious about my suggestion to hold an 8 hour long candlelit vigil instead of the May Ball. We must go further and abstain from fun completely until the submarine is found. Anything else would be disrespectful.
Update: just had the rudest encounter imaginable with Cambridge police. Said my bike went missing a year ago and got told insistently they don't take missing bikes and was told that they're "police not a giant lost and found".
The European left has been in complete denial about this for some time now and it really needs to change. A persistent failure to integrate immigrant communities in Europe has been left totally unconfronted for decades and we're reaping the consequences now.
I do find it very funny that climate protestors are all either pensioners or uni drop outs. Clearly the common denominator is simply having too much time on their hands.

Also just to be clear it isn't some fringe BNP-esque larper party that is producing this. These are all posters from the single *biggest* party in Switzerland.

It’s a fascinating time to visit Barbados. The country, now a republic after centuries of British rule, has found new cachet thanks to Rihanna, a national hero. The energy is palpable, and travelers can feel it at rum shops, markets and karaoke spots.
Update: The SU had to stop taking questions on the motion because "we would like to not put any student in a position where to answer a question they will have to incite violence"
@nokaygirl
I will be asking this at Student Council. And whether they actually have any family connections to Israel/Palestine and so any stake in this whatsoever.
What an utterly farcical take. And here’s the really shocking, surprising, totally unexpected fact: he’s not a historian. These dipsticks who pontificate on our discipline never are.
History is about recording the facts, not correcting past prejudices
As my cousin took this picture of me in King’s College, Cambridge — a white male student shouted, “if they catch you, you’ll get chucked out.”
I sharply told him: I belong here, my portrait hangs in the College Chapel — not his.
This is what sloganeering politics leads to. A hyperfocus on using obscure academic theory to try to signal awareness of issues without actually questioning what the implications of said theory might be. It's the laziest of all politics.

Katy works for me. She is single & earns less than 30k, rents a room for £775pcm in Central London, has student debt, £120 a month on travelling to work saves money every month, goes on foreign holidays & does not need to use a foodbank.
Katy makes my point really well.
All the great republican revolutions have been extremely nationalistic. You're simply not going to succeed if the focus of your campaign is to make Britain a "normal country".
We ought to worry about brain drain but not because oxbridge dared to improve its admissions process. If you want to keep Britain's best, don't make them wait until they're in their late 30s before they can afford a house and a family.
Cambridge should become a closed city like Vladivostok during the cold war. Just anything to make these tourists piss off. This isn't fucking Disneyland and I'm sure as hell not a Mickey mouse mascot to take photos and with.
This is a really very silly position to take. If you do oppose Hamas (as anyone sane should) and want to make sure that they will be incapable of inflicting what they did again, you ought to support the UK working with other Palestinian groups that oppose them.

My immunocompromised life under Trump’s handling of the pandemic was so much better & safer than under Biden - in spite of how horrifically Trump handled the pandemic, he still, somehow, managed to handle it better than Biden
I find the existence of groypers and other Nazi Catholic (generally convert) online subcultures such a strange phenomenon. A map of the German Catholic population in 1933 is essentially an inverse of a map of Nazi votes in 1933.
Anyone arguing against banning Bully XLs would argue against assault weapon bans in the US if they were ideological. Both cases of fanatical individualism where recreation takes priority over any risk to the community.
You absolutely will not be able to begin how odd this gets.
I can only assume that somewhere through the making of season five of The Crown, Peter Morgan was hit on the head by a small toffee hammer.
I still feel absolutely disgusted these people were part of the labour party and are still defended by some people within the labour party. None of this is remotely leftist, it's fascist-adjacent plain and simple.

And even though Palestine may have governments that is deeply reactionary and a population that is extremely Conservative, it should not at all change the Left's humanitarian commitment to them. This debate is as bizzare as it is unnecessary.

Oh yeah definitely. But it's almost miraculous that it doesn't show up on the rankings. Oxbridge still manages to attract the best and brightest despite paying so much less.
As with most university surveys, I totally ignored the one about the "future of the UL". But if they do want to turn it into an open-plan office I am absolutely going to respond to it. Awful development

Ah yes apparently the claim that Gulf Countries exploit modern slavery to allow for limited taxation is both "baseless" and "racist". Some socialists these people are.
Nothing quite summarises the last five years of my politics than the fact I knew instantly Greta Thunberg and her pals had likely placed that blue octopus there in homage to something much more sinister. I hate that I know the motifs now.
