Today is the 25th anniversary of Glenn Hoddle sensationally axing Paul Gascoigne from England’s 1998 World Cup squad.
Here I take a detailed look at Gazza’s time under Hoddle, and that fateful day when his World Cup dreams crumbled. 🏴
That’s a bad defeat to take.
And I honestly believe Sam Matterface saying “We needed Gary Lineker, but we got Chris Waddle” is one of the worst commentary lines of all time.
In the 1990/91 season, Paul Gascoigne was Spurs’ joint top scorer with an incredible 19 goals in all comps.
Here are all of them, in order, crammed into 140 secs.
In the form of his life and taking games by the scruff of the neck, Gazza was simply unplayable back then.

Following the news that the BBC is axing Question Of Sport after 53 years, here’s the famous Emlyn Hughes ‘Picture Board’ mistake from 1987.
An utterly unmissable show back then.
The Hillsborough disaster told through the eyes of Des Lynam, who was in the stadium that afternoon for the BBC.
This was broadcast in 2009 for the 20th anniversary. Both powerful and heartbreaking.
A day that nobody will ever forget. ❤️

It’s 24 years to the day since Dwight Yorke moved to Manchester Utd for £12.6m.
And as Yorke left Villa Park, John Gregory wished him the best of luck…
In 1983, Brian Clough had a crack at presenting for Granada television, hosting a tribute programme for Bob Paisley just after the Liverpool manager’s retirement.
No media training needed here. This was Clough in his prime, and he did it his way.
Today marks 29 years since England’s infamous night in Rotterdam.
Here at the end of ITV’s coverage, host Matt Lorenzo is forced to cut Ray Wilkins off as time runs out.
But when the camera stops rolling, Wilkins doesn’t hold back about Ronald Koeman. 😂
Remembering the time BBC Three told the story of Ireland’s penalty shootout win over Romania at Italia ‘90, together with ‘Going The Distance’ from the Rocky soundtrack.
Sensational editing, this. 🇮🇪
Today is the 60th birthday of former Germany striker, Stefan Kuntz.
His unfortunate name became a long-running joke on Fantasy Football League in the 90s. And here’s the John Motson clip which started it all off.
Just brilliant. 😂
Here’s Franz Beckenbauer talking about his and Bobby Robson’s conversation before England’s penalty shootout defeat to West Germany at Italia ‘90.
An unbelievable amount of class, and an absolute giant of the game.
RIP.
Occasionally I think about Peter Schmeichel’s haircut from the 1995/96 season.
It was a style that most of the boys at my middle school had at the time.
But he’s 32 years old here. 32.
It’s the 28th anniversary of England’s infamous night in Rotterdam.
Here, time runs out at the end of ITV’s coverage, so host Matt Lorenzo has to cut Ray Wilkins off.
But when the camera stops rolling, Wilkins tells him exactly what he wanted to say about Ronald Koeman. 🤬😂

The intro to Gazzetta Football Italia, from this day in 1995.
Featuring that changing Channel 4 logo, the instantly recognisable theme music, Gianluca Vialli, Kenneth Wolstenholme, and of course James Richardson.
Pure class. 🇮🇹
When ITV lost their live Champions League matches in 2015, they signed off with a quite brilliant montage of all the great moments they had covered during the previous 23 years.
So much top class European football seen on free-to-air terrestrial TV.
Those were the days… ❤️
For years there were tales that Sir Bobby Robson would often forget player’s names.
On what would have been his 88th birthday, here’s a brilliant story from the great man refuting that.
Polite, respectful and sharp as a tack. Lovely stuff. ❤️
Today is the 30th anniversary of England’s infamous night in Rotterdam.

It’s 28 years to the day since Brazil played Netherlands in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Before the match, the BBC used the opening credits from ‘Dallas’ to create one of the greatest football intros of all time.
Absolutely glorious. 🇺🇸
What a sad, sad day for football fans, especially from Sheff Wed and Forest. First Trevor Francis, now Chris Bart-Williams.
Here an 18 year old CBW scores in Europe for Wednesday in 1992, with some incredibly quick skill.
A young lad with the world at his feet.
RIP Bart-Man ❤️
Promised the wife I’d come off here for a few days over the festivities.
So have a great Christmas everyone!
May there be Subbuteo, Sensible Soccer & Championship Manager under your tree. As a kid, life seemed so much simpler when they were under mine.🎄⚽️

It’s 18 years to the day since Des Lynam’s last moments as a football presenter, at the final of Euro 2004.
Here, he’s professional until the end, but has a glint of sadness in his eyes as time forces him to cut the broadcast short.
The end of an era. ❤️
In 1989, ‘The Peter Shilton Story’ came out on VHS, looking back on his long career.
Here’s a selection of Brian Clough’s hilarious clips from that video.
Even when paying tribute to his old keeper, Clough can’t help but bring him back down to earth. 😂
On what would have been Sir Bobby Robson’s 90th birthday, here’s a brilliant story from the great man refuting claims that he would always forget player’s names.
Polite, respectful and sharp as ever.

It’s 30 years to the day since Graham Taylor gave us some of the most famous football quotes ever, as England salvaged a 1-1 draw in Poland.
Absolute TV gold.
So sad to hear about the passing of Gianluca Vialli.
Here’s his brilliant post match interview after Chelsea’s 1998 European Cup Winner’s Cup final win over Stuttgart. He had just become the first player/manager to win a European Trophy.
What an achievement. What a man. ❤️

Here’s all of them, in order, crammed into 140 secs.
In the form of his life and taking games by the scruff of the neck, Gazza was simply unplayable that year.
It’s 28 years today since Aston Villa beat Inter Milan in one of the most memorable penalty shootouts of the 90s.
Always loved Alan Parry’s openly biased commentary here, unable to contain his joy as Phil King fires home the winning pen.
“YOU BEAUTY!!!”
This week marks 29 years since the famous press conference interaction between Graham Taylor and journalist Rob Shepherd in Rotterdam.
“You worry, Rob, you worry. But don’t make the f**king rest of us worry, Rob.”
Absolute gold from GT.

Classic Saint and Greavsie clip from this week in 1989.
Here they discuss a track invader at the Athletics from a few days earlier.
No pundit would get away with saying this these days. 😂
Weather like today always reminds me of one of the snowiest matches ever to be broadcast live on English TV.
Forest vs Spurs. FA Cup 5th round 1996. It lasted just 15 mins.
Glorious scenes.
Today is the birthday of former Germany striker, Stefan Kuntz.
His unfortunate name became a long-running joke on Fantasy Football League in the 90s. And here’s the John Motson clip which started it all off.
Just brilliant.
28 years ago today.
Villa vs QPR in the Coca-Cola Cup.
Here Tommy Johnson stupidly kicks out at Ray Wilkins, but the 39-year-old takes the sting out of the situation by shaking his hand and telling the ref it’s no big deal.
Lovely stuff from Butch.
26 years ago today, Wrexham and West Ham famously played on a snow covered pitch in the FA Cup.
Here, Harry Redknapp reveals it was the first time his scorer Hugo Porfirio had ever seen snow, before some of the game’s mistakes are highlighted in the MOTD studio.
Glorious chaos.
On Harry Redknapp’s birthday, a reminder of the time he put a moaning West Ham fan on as a sub in a pre-season friendly in 1994.
Here nineteen years later, Redknapp is reunited with him on The One Show.
Lovely stuff.
Despite Arsenal winning the 1989 league title in dramatic fashion, the post-match analysis only lasted 2 mins.
30 secs in the studio, the trophy presentation and a quick word with Tony Adams. Then it was off to News At Ten.
ITV did not mess about in the 80s.

It’s 23 years today since TEN yellow cards were shown at Hampden Park, as England beat Scotland 2-0.
Here’s a selection of fouls from the feisty encounter, plus a dreadful
@donhutch4
tackle which goes unpunished.
A proper old school Battle Of Britain.
It was 20 years ago today when the great Brian Moore passed away. This was ITV’s moving tribute to him shortly after his death.
He will always be one of the greatest football commentators/presenters we’ve ever had.
A true gentleman of the game. ❤️
Classic Saint & Greavsie clip from this day in 1988, featuring Brian Clough.
Here, Clough defends the Football League president Phillip Carter, and invents a superb new word in the process.
Back in the studio, Jimmy Greaves gets his dictionary out with hilarious results. 😂
It’s the 27th anniversary of the Coca-Cola Cup final between Aston Villa and Leeds Utd.
But more importantly, it’s that time of year again where we salute this young lad (
@LUFCBayArea
) for sporting the single greatest haircut ever seen on a mascot.
Epic. Absolutely epic. 👏🏻
As today marks a year since Jimmy Greaves’ passing, here’s two minutes of him making Ian St. John laugh.
Saint & Greavsie were just the ultimate TV double act. ❤️
England have just beaten Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals, and Bobby Robson gives us one of the best ever openings to a post-match interview…
This is fourteen seconds of pure happiness. ❤️🏴

Glory days.
32 years ago today, England faced Argentina in one of the most bad-tempered friendlies ever seen at Wembley.
Here’s a selection of cynical and reckless fouls from the match, which somehow only produced one yellow card.
There was certainly no love lost between these two nations.
It’s 35 years to the day since a Paul Stewart brace gave Tottenham a 2-0 victory in freezing conditions at Hillsborough, live on ITV.
Snow covered pitch, orange ball, and not a pair of gloves in sight.
Different times.
Back in 1983, Brian Clough had a crack at presenting for Granada television, hosting a tribute programme for Bob Paisley just after the Liverpool manager’s retirement.
No media training needed here. This was Clough in his prime, and he did it his way.
So pleased that Graham Taylor - The Impossible Job is on Channel 4 again tonight at 11:10pm.
If you have (somehow) never seen it, then stay up this evening/record it/catch up on All 4 afterwards.
It is without a doubt the greatest football documentary ever made. 🏴
It’s the anniversary of the Republic Of Ireland’s penalty shootout win over Romania at Italia ‘90.
So here’s the time BBC Three told the story of those spot kicks, together with ‘Going The Distance’ from the Rocky soundtrack.

Here, the 33 year old player/manager takes a glorious free-kick against the 47 year old keeper.
Still got it.
It’s 32 years to the day since a nineteen-year-old Irish lad scored this belter from outside the box at Carrow Road.
Six months earlier, he had cost Forest just £47,000 from Cobh Ramblers.

This month marks 27 years since arguably the greatest ‘Goal Of The Month’ competition on Match Of The Day.

England vs Ireland from today in 1991, and a period of play which sums up perfectly the Jack Charlton philosophy.
With the home side penned in their own box, here’s two relentless minutes of long ball, pressing, direct football.
Put ‘em under pressure.
On this day in 1992, a whole new ball game was kicking off on Sky, but as a consequence there was no Saint & Greavsie on ITV for the opening day of the season.
It left a Saturday lunchtime football void which has never really been filled since.
They were of two a kind.
On the anniversary of Billy Bremner’s death, here he is at Jack Charlton’s Republic Of Ireland tribute night in 1996, unable to contain his disgust at being forced to sit next to Geoff Hurst.
They don’t make them like Bremner anymore. 😂🏴
