@dom_lucre Polar bear Kali has the choice to stay inside in air conditioning or go into his outside habitat. Most of the time, he chooses to go outside. His habitat is full of fun enrichment and has multiple ice machines, cooling fans, shade, and saltwater pools kept cool year-round.

@dom_lucre The photo shows a content, healthy bear relaxing on a bed of ice in his favorite napping pose. Bears, just like a lot of animals and pets, sleep in all sorts of positions (yes, sometimes even ones that seem odd). This is normal bear behavior seen both in zoos and in the wild.

Today, our king penguins Ethel and Elliot, along with gentoo penguins CJ, Oshie, Linus, Sunny, Double, and Trouble, took a quick field trip in the snow to visit their neighbors, polar bear Kali and grizzly bears Huck and Finley.

Over a 10-week period, Nov. 20-Jan. 30, 11 ungulate calves were born at the Zoo! The three Speke’s gazelles, two addaxes, a Soemmerring’s gazelle, a Grevy’s zebra, two lesser kudus and two lowland nyalas are healthy and bonding with their mothers behind the scenes at Red Rocks.

Amur tiger triplets Darya, Ussuri and Sungari are 2.5 months old! They’re curious, playful and active, weigh 13-16 pounds each, eat meat and still nurse, had their first checkups and vaccinations, and are starting to develop personalities. Enjoy this video from January!

It is with incredible sadness we share that western lowland gorilla Little Joe, who had been in treatment for heart disease, died of a heart attack overnight May 4th. Joe’s wonderful personality and lovable grumpy face endeared him to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

The Amur tiger cub triplets have reached a big milestone — discovering the great outdoors! The cubs were given access to the Big Cat Country habitat with their mom for the first time March 6. They still spend most of the time in the den and are not yet regularly on view.

Happy 26th birthday to this guy, Raja! Today the Asian elephant received giant birthday presents filled with some of his favorite things: cereal, peanuts, bananas and popcorn. The elephant care staff also added a large white pine tree to the habitat for him to eat.

The Zoo is saddened to share the passing of female jaguar, Ceiba. She was humanely euthanized due to advanced-stage renal failure common in aged cats. She was nearly 21 years old and the oldest female jaguar in the @zoos_aquariums Species Survival Plan in North American zoos.

It's a boy! A male Grevy’s zebra foal was born at the Zoo on July 19. Colton weighed 83 pounds at birth. His parents are mother, 15-year-old Tiombe & father, 9-year-old Dewy. As of this week, visitors can now see the colt & his mother at the Red Rocks area of the Zoo.

Camels may not be the first animals that come to mind when you think of snow, but Bactrian camels are used to the harsh weather & snow. This species is native to the rocky deserts of Central & East Asia, where temps can reach over 100°F in summer & drop to –20°F in winter.

Gloria! A female Grevy’s zebra foal was born at the Zoo on June 19. Gloria weighed 84 pounds at birth. Her parents are mother, 9-year-old Amira, & father, 10-year-old Dewy. Gloria made her public debut on Friday, July 5 and can now be seen with mom in their Red Rocks habitat.

Zoo resident sun bear, Rimba, has grown older and the foot pads on his front feet would occasionally become dry and cracked. Keepers have implemented training plans that would get Rimba used to the application of lanolin onto his feet over time.

It’s a girl! Chimpanzee Utamu gave birth to a yet-to-be-named female baby around 3:30 a.m. yesterday, Oct. 28, 2020. The baby appears to be healthy and is clinging to mom well, according to the Zoo’s primate care team and veterinarians. Read more:

Like most animals at the Zoo, the harbor seals at Sea Lion Sound are all trained to allow for voluntary nail trims. This allows the keepers to monitor their flipper health and assist with keeping their nails a healthy length.

Pebbles is a rockhopper penguin. She is young and still in her juvenile plumage. You can tell by her more “silver” color and the lack of yellow plumes on her head. Juvenile penguins will molt into their adult plumage in about the second year of their life. #WorldPenguinDay

Happy 20th birthday to the big guy Cinta! Cinta, a Sumatran orangutan, has changed a lot since he first moved to St. Louis from the San Diego Zoo in 2012. He came to us as a juvenile, but is now a father to both 9-year-old Ginger and 2-month old Forest here at the Zoo.
