. Looking at demographic shifts & how they change the way we live. Previously in Nigeria for the BBC. Economic migrant/oyinbo.
The IDF has an obligation to issue advanced warnings of attacks when civilians are likely to be harmed. It has issued many such warnings in Gaza. But we analysed the system they put in place to do this and found it riddled with inconsistencies and errors.
A Nigerian medical student at Poland/Ukraine border (Medyka-Shehyni) told me she has been waiting 7hrs to cross, she says border guards are stopping black people and sending them to the back of the queue, saying they have to let 'Ukrainians' through first.
I’m scared for friends who’ve said they’ll protest against police brutality in Nigeria. At least 10 people have been killed already. It’s no small thing that these young people who have had it too hard for too long are now demanding better from their leaders.
The Rivers State Government hereby wish to inform the general public that all forms of protests have been banned throughout the State.
Therefore, all proposed protests under
#EndSars
Campaign are hereby prohibited.
Nigerian Police have tweeted a picture with clear signs of having been photoshopped - claiming to show two suspects with arms haul. See drastic colour differences, white background under mans arm, lack of reflection, blur around the weapons... Tweet has been up for 7hrs now.
After two years of a brutal war and thousands of people killed, opposing forces in Ethiopia have agreed to a ceasefire. During peace talks in South Africa lead by Nigeria's former pres Obasanjo.
If you want to know what SARS is and why stopping this unit of the Nigerian police is so important to protestors this website is filled with (unverified) personal accounts of ordinary people’s interactions with them . Makes for pretty grim reading.
Just peeped that Fela Kuti has the lowest amount of votes to be selected for the rock and roll hall of fame induction, we can't let that happen, o wrong nau.
Hearing from another student in Lviv this morning who says Africans are not being allowed to board trains to the border are being left on platform. Too many testimonies now to discount.

What a weird world. A senator is filmed beating two women in a sex shop, the country watches the whole incident play out on CCTV footage. Young men crowd around to take selfies with him in the courthouse. He seems thoroughly pleased with himself.
Hi Naija tweeps. I have some news, I left Nigeria yesterday 😭 I'm back in London for a new job with BBC - as Global Population Reporter. A big THANK YOU to all of you - the ones who loved, the ones who laughed and (especially) the ones who ripped me apart on the regular.
So... the explanation.. the photo was not falsified, though it was falsified but only because the suspect wasn’t actually there when we took it... fascinated to know how this kind of logic holds up in a court of law.
PHOTOS OF SUSPECTS SHARED ON NPF OFFICIAL HANDLES NOT FALSIFIED
The attention of
@PoliceNG
has been drawn to comments in the social media erroneously suggesting that the photos of the suspects shared on the Police handles on 1st December, 2020 were falsified.
The family at centre of racism row in Irish sport spoke to me in their first broadcast interview. They said the apology they got from Gymnastics Ireland 18 months later was “useless”, that they only apologised “because the world wanted them to.”
This is the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger.
I've just concluded visits to hospitals with victims of this unfortunate shooting incident at Lekki .
A young journalist on his first job killed by a stray bullet in the stomach - while covering a small protest in Nigeria's capital. Precious Owolabi could have been any of us. Whoever shot that bullet has to be held responsible. This announcement by his colleagues is too sad.
Getting the Taliban spokesman on your own phone while you’re presenting live.
@BBCYaldaHakim
nailing it, all while dealing with an incredibly upsetting story. Wow 🙌🏻

's budget for 2019 is N852bn ($2.4bn). That is not a lot of money with which to run a city/state of 15m-20m people. By comparison, New York's mayor has a budget of $89bn, for a city of ~8.6m.
I am not the only journalist in Nigeria today who has met a wall of silence while trying to contact authorities - army, state gov, federal gov - for update on Dapchi girls.
Only 59% of people in western Europe think vaccines are safe. Are more and more people questioning whether to vaccinate their kids?
It's a conversation that has become toxic and polarised. WHY? Thread on my latest story, with
@Yousef_Eldin
Ten days after the Dapchi attack and 110 school children are still missing, meanwhile Nigeria's Minister of Information is sending out press releases about golf.
The director of the Auschwitz Museum has told the Nigerian President he is willing to spend a month in a Nigerian prison to spare a 13 year old boy accused of blasphemy.
The director of
@AuschwitzMuseum
wrote the President of Nigeria and asked him to pardon 13-year old Omar Farouq sentenced for 10 years imprisonment.
He declares he is ready to share part of the sentence.
'I cannot remain indifferent to this disgraceful sentence for humanity.'
Next time there's fires in California it'll be all over the news, again. But climate change is wiping out lives and livelihoods all over the world that will never make it to the front page.
In September, Jigawa State in north-western Nigeria experienced the worst floods in decades.
The floods left 15,000 people homeless, as well as destroying 80% of the farmland- affecting the main source of livelihood for majority of the population.
Another young Nigerian man trying to feel Ukraine at Medyka border (Poland) says he was told Ukrainians and then Turkish had to pass through first. He has been waiting since 4.30am.
And Light, oh Light. I could dedicate an entire ode
to the joyful sound of the siren
triumphantly announcing the return of Nepa.
Kanye said, the most beautiful things sit next to the darkest.
Naija, I’ll miss you. 💚
This is a deeply important piece of journalism for anyone who has every tweeted, liked or shared news about the Farmer/Herder conflict. Please read (and tweet, like, share)
😭Had my first SARS experience. Niggas pulled my friend and I in an UBER searched us and found nothing.
Next thing they go you are indecently dressed and it’s against the law. 😂🤣😂🤣 Bruhhhh I’m wearing a fucking T-shirt and shorts and how is that against what smelling law.
Outbreaks of diseases are happening in countries where they haven’t been seen in decades. Measles is the most obvious but also polio, whooping cough..
And it’s linked to “vaccine hesitancy” - one of the top ten global health risks this year, according to
@WHO
A parent in Dapchi just told us the governor of Yobe addressed them told them NO GIRLS have been rescued. Despite several sources telling us they have. They are devastated and very confused.
Dapchi resident told me Boko Haram preached to them this morning, saying three things - that the girls are not to go back to school, that they didnt receive money from Gov and that the did not sexually assault the children.
A parent in Dapchi called me to say he's in hiding after an order has been issued for his arrest. One parent already arrested. For attacking convoy ostensibly, though they fear gov trying to prevent them from talking to the media. Police not answering calls.

A day before the Argentina match - which had the hopes of 180m people riding on it - Nigeria’s captain Mikel Obi’s Dad was kidnapped, they threatened to kill him if he told anyone. CAN YOU IMAGINE?
I've started my new role as Global Population Correspondent for the BBC today. I'll be looking at population change and all its effects - boom, bust, movement of people and plenty more... If that's your area get in touch, would love to speak.
Jenny used to be anti-vaxx but then she stumbled on a doctor online who in hundreds of FB messages took the time to answer her questions, talk about her doubts and unpick all the misinformation she was finding online.
Boko Haram could abduct Dapchi Girls because their school had no security. The 150,000 policemen currently guarding Nigeria’s VIPs are more than sufficient to guard all the schools in the Northeast. Imagine if these officers were guarding schools in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states
I just made a film about the destructive power of looking for validation online and - in an IRONIC TWIST OF FATE - I'm now stalking the internet like a teenager to see how many people have liked it. BAHAHAHAHAHAAA. (watch the film)
Dear Lagosians,
I address you today with a heavy heart as your Governor. I do so as a father and a brother. I do so as one who is touched by the infirmities and feelings of his people. I do so as a part of the collective humanity that we all share.
Yesterday my colleague
@realdejiajayi
from BBC Yoruba was assaulted by officials from Lagos State Ministry for Environment as he was reporting on the fire and smog at Ojota dumpsite. They seized his phone and deleted his footage - what are they trying to hide?
The president's defence to calling young Nigerians lazy... "elementary English recognizes a wide gulf between "a lot of" and the word "all." How can "a lot of them," suddenly transmogrify to mean “all of them?” Mischievous and unconscionable!" 😏
One person pushing that idea is struck-off former doctor Andrew Wakefield. He wrote a fraudulent study that linked vaccines to autism. It’s been discredited several times - and yet he can still fill a conference room here in Italy...
12,476 people in the US have been killed by guns so far in 2018 (
@GunDeaths
). I would guess -though would love to see stats- that that is a lot higher then the # killed by guns (or bombs) in Nigeria in 2018. But one country has a much greater reputation for being "dangerous"
Nearly a quarter of a billion (yes, Billion) doses of Covid vaccine could go to waste if rich governments don’t donate them v soon. I spoke to researchers who came up with that number and one family feeling the sting of this inequity.
This school in Lagos allows parents to pay for their children’s fees with plastic bottles.
The group behind the groundbreaking initiative hope to impact the lives of 10,000 children through their work.
And when asked if he'll step down as Senate president after his defection from the ruling party Saraki responded - I was not given this position, I was elected.
Their fears - and I heard this in Italy, the UK, online - is that these days children have to have too many vaccines at the same time, that it's not safe. There's no scientific evidence to back this up but that doesn't mean the fears aren't genuine.
Six women - or girls - strapped with bombs and sent out to kill at least 20 people in Damboa. Boko Haram seem to have no shortage of people they can use as weapons. This brutality went beyond words a long time ago... so what do we say now? 😔
Amnesty report - "Nigerian security forces failed to act on advance warnings that a convoy of Boko Haram fighters were heading towards
#Dapchi
" when 110 girls were kidnapped.

Update from Asya, one of the young med students I spoke to yesterday. She's safe in Warsaw, found people to be incredibly kind and welcoming, all African and Asian students she's in touch with being offered help and free accommodation.
Hero 🙌🏻. I first met Nigeria when I was 17 and a Nigerian guy who worked at my train station in Dublin gave me a book by Wole Soyinka - the beginning of it all for me lol. Here’s to the next generation of great Naija writers. Go your mum 😍
I am so proud of my Mum. She today started a 'Free Library' Foundation Initiative. She will be installing these round the city of Port-Harcourt where she lives and where i grew up so people can come and read, borrow, and share all kinds of books! And for Free! Go Mum!!!
I have a really bad habit of walking around with my backpack hanging open. In Nigeria people were constantly and kindly alerting me to this, in London not so much.
I’ve learnt so much from you all. So I wrote something while sitting on the plane with tears and snot rolling down my face. It’s called “Nigeria mo chroí” (That’s Irish - Google translate it) Some might love, some might laugh, some will rip it apart, I'm sure.
The endless conversations about food.
And the tragedy, that after two and a half years in Nigeria
I’m cursed, never again to enjoy food that doesn’t taste
Like fire.
Two policemen just seized my Uber drivers keys for accidentally driving the wrong way down Walter Carrington crescent then shook him down for 1000N - brazen, shameless robbery
I’ll miss the grin of “Happy Weekend”.
Or “Madammmmm, turn your hand."
of plenty men eager to help me park,
each with diametrically opposed ideas of how to do it.
And every Uber driver who took the trip
but didn’t show up
because he didn’t like where I was going.
Big congrats to Oluwatoyosi Ogunseye, current editor of Sunday Punch who will be BBC's new Head of West African Languages. Looking forward to working with you in 2018! 👏😁
I want to appeal to the protesters to take a break from protesting tomorrow. Tempers are at a highest on all sides at this time and while we work to prevent escalation, the safety of our residents is paramount.
I speak not just as a governor, but as a father, brother and son.
