Mostly photos of Newfoundland & Labrador. The pictures are mine and may be used freely by my followers without requiring permission. Enjoy them. No DM’s please.
Yesterday I went to McDonald’s for lunch. A lady in front of me had 4 kids that were so excited to be there. She tried to pay with several cards which were denied and told the kids they would have to leave. I paid their bill. So sad to see such financial difficulties everywhere.
It was on this exact spot standing on the rock behind me that I found Luci, a little abandoned and unwanted puppy. I brought her home that day 14 years ago and yesterday I cast her ashes out onto the water here. A full and happy life has gone full circle now. Goodbye sweet Luci.
A heavy snowfall at the lighthouse this morning. We will continue to get these snow squalls all day and these are thick and heavy today. This is real snowman snow. As young children we would all be out making one.
I have always enjoyed wearing hoodies so the Mrs. knit me this one. She chose bright orange so no hunters would shoot me while I am out wandering around taking pictures.
It is Good Friday again. Every year on this day fishers leave free fish on the wharf for townsfolk to have a fish dinner on Good Friday. It’s the honour system and anyone can simply take what fish they need for their family. What a wonderful tradition that still happens here.
Dads signature maneuver in the Air Force was to buzz the house when his flying day was over announcing that he was safe and would soon be home. Here is mom and my little sister watching him at Cold Lake Alberta circa 1950.
My little sister Linda passed peacefully away this afternoon after a lengthy battle with cancer. Consequently, I will not be posting again until Monday. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time for our family.
WOW, 75! I never thought I would live this long. After careers in the military and as a corporate executive I retired at 55. Marlene and I have been extremely fortunate. Since then we have spent just about every day of those 20 years together enjoying each other and having fun.
Most of us grew up in houses this size. It amazes me that young couples all feel they need a house ten times this size to start out in. No wonder there is a housing crisis in this country. Drive by any new developments and you never see economical houses this size being built.
Upon reflection I have come to the conclusion that the no recognition of my account by Twitter is immaterial compared to the ongoing interest in my photographs from all of my very loyal followers who are still all with me. My account will soon go back to my original pictures.
After ever increasing seizures for 10 months, little Luci had several major events in the last 2 days and passed away today. We have lost 7 dogs in the last 12 years and it does not get any easier. She has now joined her other brothers and sisters. Gods speed little girlfriend.
After being my constant companion for 14 years I am going to miss little Luci, but she has left all of us with many wonderful memories to fondly think about over the coming years.
Speaking of Christmas trees, the Mrs. was determined to put up our big tree this year. She is happy now, although the only people that will see it is us two.
Sunrise over the mountains. Sorry I have not been responding to all of you as I normally do but I received such and outpouring of support from my followers yesterday that Twitter shut down my account. Too funny....
You were all in bed sleeping but the big story at 3AM was the huge full moon over Rocky Harbour and your intrepid photographer went out and got this photo for you from the lighthouse. Until tomorrow then friends.....
My New Years fireworks came early this morning when we had another beautiful sunrise. Most people were in bed fast asleep and did not even know this happened.
Little Luci’s remains were returned to us today. Her life will go full circle after I drive up north where I found her 14 years ago and distribute her ashes on the salmon river where we first met. She was a great little friend. Until tomorrow then friends.....
Driving down the Lane. How many of you have been able to see the full moon these days from where you live. This one was shinning in through the bedroom window all last night and was it ever bright.
Since Twitter slighted me I have not been taking pictures but still have some on file. To stay in touch with all my loyal followers I have decided to post one original photograph a day while they last, like this one of the ocean today. Hope you are all having a great weekend.
Driving down the Lane. Some mornings I have to ask myself why I even go out in this weather. Just trying to stay alive I suppose. Laying around in bed is simply too easy a habit to get into. Us old boys have met for coffee 20 years in all kinds of weather.
These icebergs arrive from Greenland every spring, and some are very large. It takes two years for them to travel here. Some years we see none, and other years there can be as high as 1,500 pass by our shores. Iceberg sightseeing tour boats are very popular with tourists.
I may well be the only guy who actually has a home knit woollen hoodie. It is a very warm thing for hiking in the early spring or late fall. That Mrs. can make just about anything with her hands when she puts her mind to it.
Marlene thanks you for your interest. After a setback this morning I took her to the hospital. She was x-rayed, determined to have a broken leg, and they immediately put a full leg cast on her. I cannot believe she had been hobbling around the house since Monday on a broken leg.
Also our youngest niece just had her first baby and Marlene has been the last few weeks making her this baby quilt. She will deliver it today when she goes to see the baby for the first time.
A table runner Marlene just finished for a neighbour a few doors down the Lane. Her husband passed recently and the Mrs. thought this may cheer her up a little.
There is nobody by the fire now. I cannot thank you all enough for the huge outpouring of condolences following the passing of Luci. I would have responded to each of you personally but it was impossible, over ten thousand messages received. We read them all yesterday. THANK YOU.
The forecaster was spot on and we certainly got the winter storm that was expected. It snowed all day yesterday dumping up to 60 centimetres of snow, and it is supposed to to continue all day again dumping another 20-30 centimetres. I think we are going to have a white Christmas.
A beautiful sunset on the snow at the lighthouse. I will not be posting tomorrow as I will be on a road trip taking pictures. You all have a great weekend and I will be back again on Monday.
Many regular followers will know I found Luci abandoned in the bush as an unwanted puppy while sports fishing up north. I brought her home, nursed her along, and she has been my constant companion since then. We will miss her but she had a long and wonderful life here with us.
As expected my outing last night after dark led me right to the lighthouse to grab this shot of the full moon lighting up the entrance to our harbour. Totally unplanned, the light from the lighthouse lit up the flag to ad some drama to the picture. It was worth coming out for.
Well folks, here is our little Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Who says we don’t have Christmas spirit. It dos not have to be very big because all we really want at our age is to be with each other another year. Hope you are all having a good week, and until tomorrow then friends…
Driving down the Lane. It snowed here all day yesterday, and will continue snowing until Thursday morning, so we will have a white Christmas in Newfoundland.
On this day oh so many years ago the Mrs and I got married in a military wedding at Corpus Christi in St. John’s. It was the same day and church her parents were married, and I wore the same formal uniform dad had been married in. We have been so happy together ever since.
It is very sad to think that my little pal is playing her end game now. We have had 14 wonderful years fooling around together but I fear she will soon decide to leave us for the happy hunting grounds with all her former brothers and sisters. Their lives are always too short!
How many of you remember, or actually still have, one of these large ceramic bowls that are used for mixing bread dough. They were a staple item in every kitchen in Newfoundland many years ago.
When I saw the sunrise this morning I knew we were in for another nice day here. They occur at around 7AM these days. All the snow clearing is done after working on that every day for a week now, so after I take Jersey for a little drive I am going out taking pictures today.
It has always been tradition here that on this day every year fishers leave a supply of fish down on the main wharf which anybody is entitled to go and take on the honour system to ensure everyone in the community can have a fish dinner on Good Friday. How nice these things are.
After almost three years the kids are finally home again and you just cannot wipe the smile off the Mrs. face these days. They are staying with us for the entire month this trip which is just wonderful.
Update on the Mrs….. The orthopaedic surgeon had her full leg cast removed again following an X-ray review and said it would heal on its own but she is not allowed to move around on it. Her best pal is by her side these days. Until tomorrow then friends.
Sorry I did not respond to any of you individually yesterday but I was overwhelmed by over 7,500 responses to this picture I posted. Hey Mrs, apparently quite a few folks out there liked the new hoodie you knit me.
And now there is one! After rescuing 10 dogs since we have been married Jersey, foreground, is the only one left around. At one time we had seven rescues living here with us, and the house is a much quieter place now I can tell you. They all had long and wonderful lives here.
Poor little Luci had another seizure tonight. That is the fourth in the last two weeks. I think she is warning us that at 14 she is on her end game now and may not be around forever. It is so sad that dogs lives are so short.
Good morning folks. Twitter has suspended my account for 3 days owing to the amount of traffic I have been getting so I cannot respond to your messages or follow new followers of mine. I so appreciate both and will be in touch again as soon as possible.
Every year on Thursday and Good Friday fishers here put out free fish on the wharf so folks can have a fish meal on Good Friday. Folks here are honest and only take what they need leaving the rest for others. What a wonderful Rocky Harbour tradition!
I opened this Twitter account 7 years ago today. Do you realize I have posted almost 28,000 original photographs here since then. Time flies and numbers add up. Thank all you followers for riding along with me.
I found Luci up north while I was salmon fishing. She had been abandoned in the woods and she kept herself warm by sleeping like a fox does. To this day she still sleeps with her nose under her tail.
In addition to this iceberg there were some humpback whales in the harbour putting on a little show for the people there watching. We often see whales just off the shoreline in Newfoundland, especially at this time of the year.
Were you fortunate enough to see the Flower moon last night like this one over Rocky Harbour. Every clear night with a full moon I can be found out around 3 or 4AM looking for a shot. This was short lived before the snow returned.
A full moon over Rocky Harbour for those of you who missed it last night. And people wonder why I go out at strange hours camera in hand. I just knew it was going to be another nice day.
Please allow me a moment to sincerely thank all the folks out there who follow me on such a regular basis. It is your enthusiasm for my pictures that keeps me going out to take more of them daily. Did you know I normally post 4,000 photographs a year on Twitter. Until tomorrow...
Over the holidays I had a birthday and got a smooch from Jersey and the Mrs. At my age it is challenging to blow out all these candles. They could keep the house heated on a cold night. Haha!
Thank you to the over 700 people who began following me yesterday alone. You must have enjoyed my snow pictures like this lighthouse photo which you both liked and/or retweeted almost nine thousand times since yesterday. So glad you enjoyed it.
Did you ever see Niagara Falls from the air. We flew there in a friends plane from Toronto many summers ago and received special permission to fly over the falls which really put what we saw on the ground into perspective.
Our house in the snowfall we received last night. I thought you might like one more snow picture before all this ends for another year. Sure hope you are all looking after each other out there. Until tomorrow then friends.....
As the sun goes down please accept my sincere thanks for all the support shown yesterday, and welcome to my over 200 new followers in the last week. I hope you enjoy the pictures that I post here daily. Until tomorrow then friends.......
Seeing sunrises like this one over Gros Morne Mountain confirm the benefits of being up at 5AM. It is going to be another beautiful summer day in Rocky Harbour folks. I hope you are all enjoying your weekend wherever you are.
Our poor Jersey misses her little pal and is really depressed these days. We understand that as it is the first time in her life that she has been the only dog in our house. When we rescued her 9 years ago there were 7 dogs living here with us.
On a personal note WELCOME to the 112 Afghan refugees who arrived in Newfoundland yesterday to make this place their new home. I feel certain you will all quickly make new friends here.
THANK YOU ALL for the thousands of notifications you have been sending recently, and a big thank you to the over 1,000 people who have begun following me since last week. I will eventually try to get around to all of you. I am truly flattered folks!
I have seen large icebergs over the years like the one in this file photo. Tourists love seeing them. They are harvested to make bottled water, beer, liquor, and wine as the ice is the purest water in the world. This ice froze before the pollution of the Industrial Revolution.
When I began on X 39 followers was normal, then 390 was interesting, then 3,900 was great, and now 39,000 is simply incredible. I never thought so many people would be interested in my pictures. Did you know I have posted over 40,000 original pictures here in the last ten years.
Thanks for all your enquires about Marlene since her fall. She was out of bed for a short while yesterday to begin taking a few steps with crutches. She is not as sore and beginning to come along now but I suspect she will not be running around much for at least another week.
Now folks, on this NEWS YEARS EVE I am doing something I rarely do on Twitter….taking the day off. From Marlene and I, and yes Jersey too, we wish you all the very best in the coming year. It never seems to happen but keep on praying for peace on earth anyway. All the best.
Hi followers. I have not lost sight of all the support messages you have sent to Twitter on my behalf, nor am I surprised none of you ever received a response. I am still around and truly appreciate you all looking in periodically. Have a great week everyone. Cheers
I can confirm this historical picture would have won with almost 5,000 likes and retweets. Dad was an Air Force pilot who flew over the house after every mission to notify mom that he was safe and would soon be home for dinner. Here is mom with my sister watching him circa 1950.
I have had a wonderful life with Marlene and could not have been happier all these years. We were very fortunate. It has been a good life. Hope you enjoyed our little love story, and until tomorrow then friends……
I patiently waiting in my favourite spot with our lighthouse in the distant background until the sun went down below the horizon. This was the ultimate result. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Until tomorrow then friends....
Simply the Mrs. I have looked at that big smile every day for a very long time now. No wonder I am such a happy guy, and lucky too! I feel so sad when I see people that are ways mad at each other, and simply wasting time that they will never be able to get back again.
Thank you all so much for your messages last night about me returning with my own pictures again. I tried to respond to each one personally but there were simply too many. I did however read them all. Well here we go again amid the chaos still searching for peace on earth.
Many followers kept saying they were looking forward to winter pictures so here we go for the next three months. Last night Marlene and I went to Deer Lake for dinner and this is a picture I took on the beach there. Until tomorrow then friends........
The Mrs. has her last appointment with the doctor tomorrow. If he says her leg is doing fine I am afraid I will have a difficult time holding her down, and she will want to be going everywhere. She has been getting along quite well these days. Nice to see her on her feet again.
Thank you so much to all you folks for following along again this year. It is a pleasure communicating with you world wide on a daily basis. Regardless of your beliefs, religion, or race, may you all have a wonderful holiday season with family and friends despite the bad weather.
Today is the Mrs Birthday. On her special day I am doing the housework/laundry, and then taking her over to Woody Point seen here for dinner at The Loft (her favourite restaurant), and then to see Kellie Loder (her favourite singer/songwriter) on tour at the Heritage Theatre.
The Mrs. knew I was finding it hard to mow the lawn now and surprised me with this new toy. Now I mow the grass several times a day haha! Also, in the winter I can put a snowblower attachment on the front of this little tractor to do the driveway. God love the Mrs.
Well Miss Jersey, you are 11 years old today and have been riding around in the car with me ever since I drove to St. John’s to get you from Beagle Paws Rescue. I hope we still have a few more years together girl.
There is now enough Covid 19 vaccine in Canada for every single citizen. If you have not already done so, go out and get vaccinated folks. The life you save by doing so may just be mine. Join the 80% of Canadians who have already stepped up for their country. Cheers
Happy Easter everybody. After being under the weather most of last week I am trying to find my sea legs again today, and hope to start posting again tomorrow or Tuesday. Thanks for your concern everyone…..
Well I am back from the vet and have a gastro intestinal infection. Mom has to give me a bunch of medicine for a week and I should be as good as new again. We are all tired now after a day in the city so Dad will send you some pictures tomorrow. Woof, woof!
My kid sister is in palliative care in Hamilton Ontario and this therapy dog comes to visit her which brightens up her entire day. Thank you to all the volunteers and their service dogs who work daily in our hospitals. Until tomorrow then friends.....
My site is just photos of Newfoundland/Labrador to give fond memories to those living away, evoke thoughts of far away places to those who were never here, and bring joy to those who cannot get outdoors daily like I do. No, there is no politics, sex, religion, or bad news here.
My poor little sister sent me this sunrise this morning from her room window in palliative care. This is the only scene she will ever see again. The thought makes me so sad.
Well there you have it. I will attempt to post this month when these two give me a few minutes to myself. We have a lot of visiting and travelling around to do in the next four weeks. Until tomorrow then friends……
Here is how the cross stitch is coming along. It is almost half finished now and certainly kept Marlene amused while she was laid up wth her bad leg. She is now getting around the house fairly well with just a walking cane. Until tomorrow then friends…….
Where would you rather be. On a beach in south Miami with a hundred thousand other people and all kinds of rules to follow, or off alone with your thoughts on a beach in northern Newfoundland?
I used to greet each new follower individually. Time and numbers do not allow for that now but I do wish to thank the three thousand new followers that have begun looking in during the last four months. I also sincerely thank all the followers I have had for so long now. Cheers.
