In order to help people who want to apply for the Google Apprenticeship ima give some resume tips. How to edit your resume from non-tech career focus to tech ready. A thread:
You already have transferable skills you just don't know it!
Main part of a resume:
Skills - What can I do.
Experiences - What I did.
Projects - What I built.
Key tips:
1) Add nums to bullet points (i.e. instead of saying "I clean floors", say "I managed (3) physical spaces"
2) Use resume ADVERBS (i.e. created, implemented, coordinated)
Tech recruiters and companies are looking for skills and projects that demonstrate your ability to impact the organization through change or management (I know thats mad words, but stay with me).
Skills: There are two types
a) Soft Skills: communication, critical thinking, team management ect.
b) Hard Skills: data, coding languages, a software you know how to use (google docs, MS word, Slack), social media, ect.
Regardless of if you ran a fortune 500 company or worked as a bus boy, you have gained some TRANSFERABLE skills that can be applied in different environments.
How to demonstrate skills proficiency: soft skill are shown by examples.
ex: I helped plan a block party
resume: I project managed key partnerships with 3+ stakeholders resulting in a community block party with 300+ attendees and 10 sponsors.
Projects: This is about you showing what you have worked on and built through effort. Projects can be related or unrelated to work. It can be at church, an after-school program and even a personal project.
Ex. I worked at McDonalds as a shift manager and helped roll-out a new register software.
PJT: Managed onboarding (3) employees while integrating the roll-out of a new tool resulting in an avg decrease in client register time of 45s; resulting in a scaleable cost savings.
In general your resume is about speaking about your experience. You don't need to lie to convince someone that you deserve a chance to grow.
Keep learning through youtube, Udemy and certificates. It doesn't matter if you went to college or not.
