Turns out the space medicine dream is being kept well alive… I’ve been selected by the European Space Agency
@esa
to be their sponsored medical doctor at Concordia Base, Antarctica for the winter-over in 2025. Time out of NHS training incoming…❄️🐧🇦🇶🚀🥼🩺 (📸 :Concordia blog)
Y’all.
I. Have. Finished. Medical school. *
Final exams, done!!!! Placements, done!!! 6 years of the best and worst times of my life to be honest. Loading double doctor P.
*Pending any resits, gulp, and elective 🥳🤩✈️🚁🚀
This is going to be such a tough decision. Aviation & Space Medicine/Intensivist dream versus Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon dream. Tonight I don’t think I’m going to sleep. The double life of hard work has paid off but now I need to decide! 🚀💊💉😷
After much deliberation…I’ve accepted a General Surgery themed core training program. I’m gonna be a surgeon!! 😷👩🏼⚕️🔪🤩 and perhaps I’ll find a way to make the space dream happen too - space surgery anyone?! 🚀😷 (sorry anaesthetics and I’ll see you in the operating room ❤️)

Pretty cool as a 1st gen working class Geordie gal to press submit on a job application to become an astronaut! Worth a shot, right? Would proudly put European astronaut corps reject on my CV 😋🚀

Now for the summer holidays ☀️ (with a pinch of anxiety awaiting results…)
It’s truly been an honour to get to work with experts at

’s Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer! It’s been a helluva learning curve 🧬🚀📝
Out Of Programme Experience approved ✅
Feels SO good to be supported by the deanery and be able to take time out of training instead of giving up my core surgical training post to work for
@esa
in Antarctica 🚀🇦🇶
Started my official duties with

today, briefing on the biomedical & psychological studies I’ll be carrying out in Antarctica for the winter-over 2025. I even met the first doctor to winter-over 20 years ago, Dr Dicasilati, a general surgeon! 🚀🇦🇶
Results day today. I failed an exam. I know it’s not the be all and end all, but after this academic year, I just wanted to rest and recharge over summer. One for the anti-CV! Send good luck vibes for resits next month 💪🤞

Celebrating an Anaesthetics/Northern offer. Got some big decisions to make over the next 48 hours but this feels like a huge weight lifted knowing I’ll be employed & near home, pending a CST rank/?offer tomorrow. 😷💊💉🥂
(PS This application cycle has aged me - what a mess!)
There’s a lot to reflect on but; officially an astronaut reject. Hopefully they’ll still let me be a space doctor one day, though? 😎🤓👩🏻🚀

I passed my resit and I’M A FINAL YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT! Mere months, 3 placements, 2 electives, painstaking admin/applications & finals stand between me and being a clinician 😅😁🤓🥳👩🏼⚕️ Bring it on!

(and final year started today!)
Last day of placement as a medical student ever (hopefully!!). The past 6 years have certainly been a wild ride. Had to recreate the look for a day 1 comparison. 🩺🥼🥳
