I am honored to have been named the new poet laureate of Kentucky by Gov. Andy Beshear. As a writer who was raised working class and in trailers, as a questioning person of faith, and as the first openly gay poet laureate I will do my best to represent my place and my people.
I am so proud to have been the writer and creative director of the new video by
@TTChilders
, with the story idea by
@JasonKyleHoward
. I am so thankful to Tyler for his artistic vision and to the phenomenal cast and crew, who gave it their all.
"We also knew a lot of people would be seeing themselves for the first time in a country music video and it has been deeply moving to hear from many of them," House told
@USATODAY
. "All of their love for the video and the song far outweigh the hatred.โ
A little confusion out there so I want to clarify. "In Your Love" was written by
@TTChilders
and Geno Seale. I only wrote the music video. Story idea is by me and
@JasonKyleHoward
. It's such a masterfully written love song, so I want to make sure it is credited properly.
Kentuckians, please donโt be complacent. Vote on Tuesday. Iโm voting for
@GovAndyBeshear
because he leads w/compassion instead of division, Kentuckyโs economy has boomed under him, he cares about the arts, and he has always been a governor for ALL Kentuckians.
#AndyBeshear
Iโm so happy tonight. Kentucky voted for compassion and unity over vitriol and division.
@GovAndyBeshear
is a governor for ALL Kentuckians.

Some days I work on novels, poems, and music videos. Other days I can beans with my parents and husband (the beagle helped, too). Itโs all an attempt at making art.
I cannot begin to thank everyone for the wonderful support so many of you have given me after the recent announcement of my appointment as Kentucky's new Poet Laureate. I can feel the love and I appreciate it more than I can say.
One of the hardest parts of witnessing this legalized discrimination in Kentucky for me is also witnessing the lack of outrage. This is the first step in erasing a whole group of people and too many people are sitting quietly by while it happens. Stand up with us.
#KyHateBills
Iโm really moved by this. Probably one of the toughest times in history to share queer stories.
This dude is so beloved. He didnโt have to do this and chose to anyway. I love it.
Weโll done Silas House. Itโs a beautiful story and thank you
@TTChilders
.
You all. Wow. Never thought Iโd be a
#Grammy
finalist. We all knew this project was special when we were doing it. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard on it.
#InYourLove
I am proud to have named
@silasdhouse
as Kentucky's new poet laureate. I know he will represent our commonwealth and all of our people through this role and his talents. Congratulations, Silas!
All of my love is going to the people of Nashville after news of a shooting at an ELEMENTARY school. It's especially sickening after watching the legislators there put so much energy into banning drag shows instead of implementing measures that would actually protect kids.

I was honored to read my poem, "Those Who Carry Us" (written for the occasion), at the second inauguration of our governor,
@GovAndyBeshear

Had a long talk with
@TTChilders
and
@silasdhouse
about allyship, rural life, art as politics, Tylerโs new album and their spectacular new music video for โIn Your Loveโ
My remarks from today's induction as the new Poet Laureate of Kentucky. I hope you might have nine minutes to listen in. I am so thankful to all of you for the well-wishes. I appreciate them more than I can say. Big love to all.
I never thought Iโd see LGBT affirmation on the CMTs. My ole gay country heart needed this joy and defiance. Good on
@KelseaBallerini
and
@CMT
. Thereโs bound to be a backlash but

My

suit was hand-painted by
@wyliecaudill
. It was a pleasure to wear this work of art. All the flowers and leaves have a Kentucky connection. The four leaf clovers are a nod to the music video we were nominated for.
Jason Isbell: "I believe that people should be allowed to be who they want, to love who they want. I think there is a big systemic racial issue in our country. I think a lot of people are pushed to the margins intentionally"
Iโve received questions about how I pronounced โPennyroyalโ and โCadizโ in my inauguration poem. Thatโs how most Kentuckians would say those words. I intentionally included words that would allow Kentucky pronunciations to help capture our specificities.
Please remember that Bob Edwards was a Kentuckian. He was very good to me. On 9/11 his radio work informed and comforted the whole country. A legendary voice and such a kind man.

Maybe all you people who voted for these bigots putting through anti-LGBT legislation in Kentucky will give a damn when our economy takes the inevitable plummet because of this. You sure donโt care about LGBT people.
Recently someone told me I am good at articulating despair in my work. โMakes sense youโd know despair, since youโre from Appalachia,โ they said. The comeback I thought of too late: โIf you think Appalachians do despair well, please know weโre even better at Appalachian joyโ.

Over the last week I have perfected my first chapter, written 4 keepable pages for the second, & discovered the defining traits of 2 of my main characters. This might not seem like much but for how I work as a novelist itโs as if Iโve built the entire foundation for my house.

UPDATES ON LOUISVILLE BANK SHOOTING:
- The shooter is dead
- Five people were killed
- 6 people, including an officer, were taken to a hospital with various injuries.
Itโs bad enough that the vast majority of the KY GOP voted against the rights of parents of LGBT people (and LGBT students of any age). But even worse that two Democrats did. Remember to vote out Robin Webb and Ashley Tackett-Laferty when you can.
No disrespect to the panelists or any of the selections (which include some of my favorites) but it is frustrating that not a single selection or comment represents rural people. The fact alone that a conversation like this can exist and not even allude to... 1/3
A clarification on this post: I'm not bemoaning that people have questions. Nor am I worried if people don't like the way I pronounced the words. I wanted to point out that having specific pronunciations of place names is a wonderful thing and I'm glad we have so many here.
Iโve received questions about how I pronounced โPennyroyalโ and โCadizโ in my inauguration poem. Thatโs how most Kentuckians would say those words. I intentionally included words that would allow Kentucky pronunciations to help capture our specificities.

On a day when Tucker Carlson stoops to new lows by laughing it up with Putin, I hope more people will read up on the plight of Evan Gershkovich, an American journalist who has been imprisoned in Russia for almost a year. I'm sad there is no outcry for him.

Seems like a good day to say that Sally Field is one of my favorite actors of all time and her performance in this film is one of the best, ever. Also, this film has influenced everything I've ever written. A masterpiece.

My first school visit as

There were so many people behind the scenes making the 2nd inauguration of
@GovAndyBeshear
so beautiful but chief among them for me was
@kennybishop
, Program Coordinator for the Inauguration, who worked so hard to make it all happen. 3 cheers for Kenny & all behind the cameras.
I'm proud to be reading a poem I wrote for the occasion at the second inauguration of

Sometimes people say to me โBut how do you have enough time to see all the films and TV you see? And all the books you read?โ I donโt. I make the time. Because itโs part of my job. Artists must consume art.
