From a Deaf person: • expecting your partner to teach you ASL is exploitative • making your partner read lips when they prefer to sign is exploitive • mentioning to people that you date/dated a deaf person for the “wow factor” is exploitive and gross (hearies).

I feel like no one talks about the psychological turmoil that happens when a deaf person creates this whole life for themselves away from their non-signing family members and then said family members comes over to visit and impedes on that deaf person’s ritual and way of life.

When I was mentoring, I would pop their bubble immediately (with tact and grace) and just bluntly say, “Deaf people have existed for centuries; what makes you think we need your help?” and ease them into a conversation about abled savior complexes.

So much of my work in deaf studies is just reframing things for students to see it differently. For instance a lot of students talk about “helping deaf people” and I always reframe it as “the deaf community always appreciate the opportunity to work with their peers such as you”.

One thing I think many interpreters don’t take notice of is exactly how much of an arbiter you are in presenting the deaf person’s personality and catching these nuances happens often times in between interpreting. Allow me to illustrate.

There’s something vaguely... toxic having grown up in a household that complained about having captions on and constantly having to switch them on and now that my parents are older and losing THEIR hearing, not having captions for their sake is unheard of now.

It’s always a blow when a customer tells me they don’t want to be helped by a Deaf person. In the time that it took for this person to write this, they could have wrote their order down instead or at least, a question. #audism
