It does my head in when I hear ward nurses say (of ICU nurses) “They can only look after one patient” because the reality is that it can take a round the clock team to care for just one ICU patient; multiple procedures every minute of every hour #MedTwitter

@shinybluedress @Laura_Guest1 And in some cases it will take more than one critical care nurse to look after a patient! There has always been a lack of understanding about the specialty sadly.

@shinybluedress I once was ICU/ ITU critical care nurse….it’s in the name. It’s critical that that one person has 24hr 1:1 care. We should be celebrating every nursing role not scrutinising it. But even 18 years ago colleagues felt we had it “easy”. Have they ever turned a vented patient prone?

@TerrettSarah Proning a sedated & ventilated patients takes at least 5-6 staff approx 20-30 minutes

@shinybluedress @Poppyjuice In 25 years+ I’ve never heard a ward nurse say this and if I did I would challenge them. I think it’s important that we all have respect for each other’s specialisms.

@Vicki31249250 @Poppyjuice If I had a £1 for every time someone has either said it to me or to another colleague or amongst themselves as a throw away comment then I’d be rich

@shinybluedress I’ve been at the mercy of the Prismaflex tonight, 🙄. Access pressure extremely negative 🤬. Held me hostage for ages, totally unable to do anything else. Tried all the usual stuff, nope, new filter please. Gah!!!!! That said, hats off to our ward colleagues, difficult job

@sequinaddict Is it the Vas Cath or the patient moving/coughing? Darn negative pressure alarm always a nightmare lol. BYW do you use Regional Citrate over Heparin for anticoagulation now? RC has been a very positive step in filter running thankfully

@shinybluedress And running that machine? You're going to need a dialysis trained nurse

@disabilityharpy That’s what you trained to do in ICU - although they’re different machines to ones in dialysis units

@shinybluedress How do you think us ED nurses feel when we hear ward colleagues belittle our speciality? I’ve worked wards, ITU and ED all have there differing pressures. We should just all respect each other. Spread the love❤️

@shinybluedress I'm amazed that was said by a nurse. I would guess they're jealous of your expertise and status. If I was in ICU, I would be very grateful you were there for me.

@simms_susanne It’s a common throw away comment, often said as a joke. But not always

@shinybluedress My 1st placement was ITU, but when I went on my 2nd placement to a combined assessment unit a nurse told me ITUs not proper nursing. I said they were wrong but got shot down in flames. They then preceded to go for their break leaving me on my own with 2 HDU patients!
