We are so tired. Our hospital admins are silently expecting us to push forward in rapidly deteriorating conditions. Instead of retaining core staff the last 18 months they pushed us away. Our Covid census has now surpassed the peak in 2020 with a skeleton of the workforce we had.

If a hospital administrator can receive six figure bonuses while patients sit in stool for hours on end because they refuse to pay to supplement staffing, the system is beyond repair. They know that unsafe staffing leads to poor outcomes, they just don't care.

We lost 18 people in one day yesterday. 90+ on ventilators. 100% staffed operational capacity. 620+ patients hospitalized. 91% of those hospitalized are unvaccinated. They’re not going home anymore.

TW: Patients in abhorrent conditions. Patients placed in cramped rooms without adequate ventilation or air conditioning and full of medical equipment. Oxygen in the facility stopped working on July 5th, staff has been forced to using portable tanks for patients.

I get frustrated when people who don’t work in healthcare tell me they “don’t care if unvaccinated people die or are hospitalized” I do. I have to watch them struggle to breathe, I have to tell them that they aren’t doing well on 100% BIPAP & that intubation is next.

I still can’t get over the fact that regulatory bodies like JAHCO & DNV are still surveying hospitals via zoom & complaining about tape on surfaces & unsecured drinks at the nurses station. Meanwhile we’re still reusing single use N95s & critically short staffed every night.

I stopped wearing makeup to work.⁣ ⁣ In order for our N95s to go through UV light sterilization they must not be contaminated with any makeup stains.⁣ ⁣ The process for our N95s now is as follows:⁣ - Write your name/unit in sharpie on the front of the mask.⁣ (1)

Patients who come in for things other than Covid risk exposure in the crowded ER hallways. ER nurses & techs must manage chaos in an over crowded environment. This is not safe for patients. This is not safe for staff.

AND THIS IS CRUCIAL TO NOTE. When there are no STAFFED beds on the inpatient floors, patients will be waiting in the ER. In hallways, in waiting areas, in makeshift areas. Some patients who are admitted can wait over 3 days on a stretcher to go to a bed.

Previously preserved ratios on PCU/ICU/MED-SURG Floors are no longer. With no protections for these nurses in states like Florida, ICU nurses will be tripled or even take 4 unstable patients. On PCU/Stepdown nurses are now taking 6-7 patients instead of 3-4.

CNAs are expected to care for entire hallways of patients when staffing is short & if there is no cna to cover a hallway, nurses must do both roles while managing potentially unstable patients.This is especially difficult on the COVID units where donning & doffing PPE takes time.

That mass exodus of nurses I spoke about over a year and a half ago is only just beginning. Many nurses have left bedside nursing to travel, seek outpatient opportunities, learn new trades, change careers entirely or retired early. We are all realizing our worth & quickly.

When there is a strain on our hospital systems & a strain on staffed ICU capacity, every single unit suffers. To make room for ICU beds, patients are downgraded to the floors early. PCU/Stepdown nurses are managing 5-6 patients, some from ICU who can crash at any moment.

I only wear an N95 with my surgical mask over it but some nurses (& other HCWS) do three layers with the cloth mask over them because they don’t want to take any chances as their N95 is 2-3 weeks old. Yes. It’s hard to breathe. Especially when you have little to no breaks.
