The Egyptian Vulture is currently taking a very relaxed attitude and is sitting preening on Tresco. Also viewable from the Star Castle on the Garrison 😍🦅💪 photo by

A huge thanks to

Who has received their copy of the Isles of Scilly Bird and Natural History Review 2022? It’s a cracker, if we do say so ourselves 😎 thanks to our editors, contributing photographers, artists, species writers and everyone involved 🙏
The osprey photographed on Scilly yesterday was ringed as a chick at a nest in the grounds of Beaufort Castle, near Beauly, Inverness-shire in July 2018, so this is a two year-old heading north for the first time! Thanks for the info
@timmackrill
American Golden Plover still on Tresco, Red-eyed Vireo on St Martin’s and Swainson’s Thrush on Bryher that showed beautifully this morning 🥳🐦 thanks to all being Covid-responsible whilst birding to keep everyone safe ♥️
We’ve had a little sprinkling of snow buntings today ❄️ plus another Red-eyed Vireo, a Rustic Bunting and a second Blue-winged Teal on Tresco. More sightings here

Welcome to all the birders who’ve arrived today! The blue rock thrush is still on St Mary’s, plus a big arrival of redwing, hawfinch, rosefinch, red-eyed vireo and this pale subalpine warbler. More here >>
Crazy day with birders on St Mary’s chasing thrushes left and right - congrats to
@dub_birder
finding a Swainson’s Thrush 🙌 (shame it disappeared 😭) but the Blue Rock Thrush finally showed for a few more folks. Photo by

Bloody fantastic views of the BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER this a'noon on Bryher. Phonescoped pic
Worth the D-day style landing...

Who remembers this beauty from 2001? Did you trip over it getting off the boat at Carn Near? This North American Horned Lark has been accepted as the first British record 🐦🐤💛 thanks

For everyone hoping to get to
#Scilly
this autumn, we have pulled together some information to help everyone stay safe and enjoy the birding season!💚🐧🦅🦉🦆🐦🐬🦀🌊
Happy October everyone! We can’t wait to welcome you all back for the autumn Scilly birding season. With no bird log this year (😭) we’ll be running a WhatsApp group to gather your sightings and counts of common species. DM us or comment if you’d like to join. Happy birding 🦅
In the famous year of 1999, a Short-toed Eagle caused chaos by doing a circuit of the islands, starting on St Agnes and flying across St Mary’s, St Martin’s and finally on to the Eastern Isles. Who saw it? 🦅 thanks
@readbirdphotos
Our annual daily October Bird Log starts tonight 🥳 It will be held in the Scillonian Club at 9pm until 27/10. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the 2022 Bird & Wildlife Review will be on sale (£15) or can be purchased from Lyonnesse House on the Strand.

Joe Pender’s amazing photos of the Humpback and Fin Whales off Scilly the other day have made the news - check them out here >>

strike again!
Can we say a MASSIVE thank you to
@scillyboating
for a heroic effort getting everyone from all the islands to and from Bryher yesterday, including some very creative landings and transfers 🙌🙌
For the first time in 45 years, we can’t hold a face-to-face bird log on Scilly 😭
SO we’ve set up a WhatsApp group to report records of common birds seen on Scilly during October 🥳
If you’d like to join, comment or DM us and we’ll send you the link 🦉
On this day: 6th Oct 1966
Britain’s FIRST rose-breasted grosbeak and THIRD red-eyed vireo were both trapped & ringed on St. Agnes. This followed a nutcracker on St. Martin’s the previous day and preceded Britain’s first northern parula on Tresco later in the month.
#OnThisDay
For birders travelling to Scilly tomorrow, there are boats from
@scillyboating
from St Mary’s to St Agnes at 8.30, 10:15, 14:00, 15:30. Tresco boats and St Agnes boats are also running
Lots of birders arriving and leaving today, but opportunities to catch up with yellow-billed cuckoo, blue rock thrush AND a gorgeous showy white-rumped sandpiper by Martin Goodey
#scillybirding
More great autumn migrants with a sprinkling of rare birds, inc. buff-bellied pipit, Swainson’s thrush, little, Lapland and snow buntings, American golden plover, flycatchers, nightingale, Radde’s warbler, red-throated pipit AND of course, GREYLAG GOOSE 😉
Welcome to all new birders arriving this weekend! Please remember to abide by social distancing rules, mask up in a crowd and keep everyone safe ♥️🐦 full statement >>
Brilliant photo of the Porthmellon little bunting by young Josh Morris. Out-doing his older brother Jack’s DSLR with a nifty bridge camera and the ability to squeeze in to small spaces!
Great to see young birders being captured by the Scilly magic!
Scilly’s first nutcracker was found on October 5th 1966. The Siberian Thrush on Gugh in 1999 was arguably the start of the best three days in Scilly birding history 😍 who was there?! Thanks
@readbirdphotos
Strong NW winds on Saturday night produced a juv. Iceland gull at Porthloo and a fantastic adult kumlien’s gull at Morning Point. A far cry from last winters haul of white-winged gulls but hopefully a sign of things to come as colder winds set in. Both birds still present today.
A dull blustery day across Scilly today. Birding was difficult but an obvious arrival of black redstarts, a common rosefinch on the edge of town, a showy Richard’s pipit, and the eastern yellow wagtail putting on a good show on Tresco kept everyone ticking over!
#ScillyBirds
Scilly hotting up with an increasingly impressive array of birds on show today (or not in the case of a certain streaky Acro). RTP and greenish on Agnes, and the aquatic providing the highlights, plus a scattering of YBWs. What’s next?!

We’re looking forward to welcoming birders back this Autumn for (🤞🤞) a great birding season!

5pm - Pay onboard
It’s beginning to feel more ‘birdy’ in the past day or so. Lots of common migrants in with more high profile additions including lesserlegs (Tresco), dotterel (Bryher), and RBShrike, wryneck, and nightingale (St. Mary’s) whilst Scilly’s 6th tawny owl is recovering in care
#autumn
Still quiet for birds but wild for weather here on Scilly - American Golden Plover new in, plus wrynecks, Lapland buntings, yellow-browed warblers and more >>
📷 Lapland Bunting, John Holt
Thrilled that so many people have connected with the Rustic Bunting and Serin today - one of these beauties would have been nice though 😂 at least we’ve all got suntans 🤔☀️

The avocet (first Scilly record since 2008) is on Bryher today after moving between St Agnes and St Mary’s is recent days. Osprey still around the islands, and seven sandwich terns and a common tern between Annet and Bishop Rock
