Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m 35 and a doctor. I also have a heart condition that puts me at an increased risk for serious complications from covid.

- Does the face of

look different than you thought?
My life matters and so do the nearly 10,000 Americans who died from covid last week. Please feel free to add your own image/story so we can show people what chronic illness really looks like.

This is Niko. He was born 15 weeks early and weighed just over 1 pound. Today he is two and THRIVING. He’s too young to wear a mask or get vaccinated so
#IMaskFor
Niko. Who do you mask for?
I was called to a late preterm delivery for an infant that was actively hemorrhaging (from everywhere). We spent the night transfusing all of the blood products (PRBCs, cryo, plts, FFP, F7, TXA). This pic captured the first time I sat (ie: collapsed) in almost 10 hours.
Made it through my first week as an attending with zero codes and zero deaths. I can barely keep my eyes open but I’m going to enjoy some waffles and count that as a definite win. ✨
Yesterday I delivered a 30wker to a mom who didn’t get steroids bc she kept leaving AMA (which made me mad). Today I learned that her husband had been deported so she was taking care of 4 children alone. This is your daily reminder to always be kind. You never know the full story
Today that little one is home with family. The hard days are hard but the good days are oh so very sweet. Feeling very fortunate to love and take care of sick kiddos and their families.

My parents are requiring all family members to be vaccinated for future holiday gatherings this next year and I can’t even tell you how delighted that makes me.

It can be extremely isolating having an illness that others can’t “see.” Thank you for sharing and hang in there! I’ll be thinking about you! ✨
A few days ago I got a rash. After convincing myself that I had scabies and/or T-cell Lymphoma I saw my PCP who reassured me that it was (wait for it) poison ivy. This has been a lesson on the dangers of self-diagnosis. I hope you’re all smarter than me. Thank you and good night.
I’M FINALLY A GROWN UP BABY DOCTOR! I just accepted my dream job as an assistant professor in Neonatology

. I’m so excited to continue my research in communication and shared decision making in Salt Lake City!
I thought turning *35* would feel weird or scary. If I ever decide to have children I will be AMA (or geriatric!), I’m close to 40 (5 years but it’s there) and yesterday I found my first gray hair. However, after spending the majority of the last 6 years in the ICU… 1/2
Really, where does the time go? After six years of post-grad training, I can’t believe I’m finally PGY-DONE. It’s a surreal, insane, bittersweet moment and I’m incredibly grateful for all the people and patients who helped me get here. What a wild ride it’s been

The first photo was taken the day I turned 30. I was late to my own surprise party because I stayed late to stabilize 24-week twins. The second photo was taken this week on my 34th. I’m a better person bc I’m a doctor and a better doctor bc I’m a person.

I know that many people will never get to turn another year older. So instead, I feel incredibly grateful to celebrate another year exploring this amazing planet and loving so many of you wonderful humans on it. 2/2
One of my favorite attendings used to sit very quietly beside the bed of extremely sick babies for hours. When I asked him what he was doing he said, “I am giving them all of my luck. It’s why I don’t have very much for myself but it’s alright. They need it more.”
Sometimes I speak softly to the 👶
#preemies
I care for and beg them
🙏"tell me what's wrong with you"
While no one has ever spoken back I still have hope that my pleas mean something to them

Those who support this law believe she should miss school, suffer the ridicule of being a pregnant teen and be retraumatized by the birth of her rapist’s baby? Then what? I’m just trying to find the “moral high ground” here so I can run as far away as possible

Dear

- I legitimately think I have the greatest job in the world. If your heart is in medicine, please don’t give up. It is eventually worth it.
During residency I took care of an 11y old girl who was held hostage for two days without food or water while she was repeatedly raped (oral, anal and vaginally) by a much older man before escaping through an open window. 1/2
Officially covid free and back to work! The test wasn’t pleasant but not nearly as bad as I anticipated. So thankful I didn’t inadvertently expose any of my patients or colleagues. If you’re a healthcare worker, stay healthy. Everybody else, please stay inside!
Yesterday, my article was rejected from a major medical journal. Today, I edited and submitted it to a different one. How many times will I go through this cycle? As many as it takes.

HAPPY MATCH DAY! The world is so lucky to have you in it. You are going to do incredible things and we cannot wait to welcome you to residency. Get ready to continue the crazy, exciting, humbling, occasionally terrifying but always beautiful journey that is medicine

I know I’ve been MIA for a while but I’m back with a few updates for the new year!
I recently accepted a faculty position with

More people have unfollowed me in the last 48 hours than ever. Apparently, posts about covid, vaccines and Medicaid are ok but

crosses the line. To them, I say: k, thanks, byeeee👋🏽 👋🏽
Starting a 24 after multiple emergent intubations/codes in the delivery room yesterday. How’s my “not terribly amused but hanging in there” face coming along? I think nicely...
